he was the boy every girl in school liked, but i liked him most. to be fair, it wasn’t much of a competition. i knew him best, because i was his best friend. but for awhile, i thought that’s all i’d ever be. because i’d had the misfortune of being a girl born in a boy’s body.

we met in eighth grade. he was the new kid, and i was his first friend. later, i liked to say that i…

Beau Is Afraid

2023

★★½ 8

Beau Is Afraid is the mommy issues movie to end all mommy issues movies (a genre A24 apparently specializes in). It’s as exhausting as it is entertaining, and it takes way too long to get to its thematic resolution, but thank god for Patti LuPone, whose note-perfect performance (almost) brings it all together in the end.

Adored the first hour, kinda hated the second, and then was awestruck by the legend that is Patti LuPone in the third so I’m not…

Showing Up

2022

★★★★ Liked Watched

Kelly Reichardt has such a gift for making the mundane meaningful, and Showing Up is no exception. With the help of an exceptional ensemble - Michelle Williams acing it as an antisocial artist as Hong Chau steals every scene - she wrings wonder out of one of the “worst weeks ever.”

All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt

2023

★★★★ Liked Watched

All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt is unlike anything else I’ve seen at Sundance. A non-linear, lyrical look at love, loss, and life itself, conveyed through Raven Jackson’s delicately dreamy direction and Jomo Fray’s consuming cinematography. Hushed, but full of heart in every frame.

You Hurt My Feelings

2023

★★★★ Liked Watched

You Hurt My Feelings is another Nicole Holofcener knockout. A witty look at the “little” white lies we tell those we love, and why. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is at the height of her powers here, landing every line with a biting blow, but the entire ensemble excels (Michaela Watkins is a wonder).
