Absolutely loved every second of this one. It's frequently silly and is literally about a pig that's a pilot, but it really does have layers and a degree of maturity to it. The film is also extremely pretty, the animation is so detailed and vibrant, it's genuinely hard to take your eyes off the screen. There are also just a ton of great characters here, all with unique and charming personalities, I see myself revisiting this film time and time again just for the characters. The script is also extremely strong, adding depth in all the right places, and there are tons of great quotes ("I'd rather be a pig than a fascist" is probably my new favorite line from a family film). This is a new favorite for me, and I'm aware that I'm a bit late to the party here, but if somehow you've missed this one it's worth your time.

This is absolutely fantastic film making, the cinematography and editing are amazing, and the choice to have the film be in real time is what makes this so amazing. The way we gradually get to no Cleo as she goes about her day, we are waiting with her for some news, and there is so much subtlety in how that waiting plays out. This film is filled with atmosphere, as we listen in on snippets of other people's conversations in ing, or watching the city by in the back of a taxi, it's wonderfully well handled. The performances are all great, and really lend themselves to the realism of the film. The script here is also really strong, with tons of quotes that will stick with me for some time. I highly recommend this one, it's fantastic.

This really does feel like your normal mid action flick, a couple of laughs, a few cool action momoments, and a cool premise. Unfortunately there is just as many unfunny jokes, and lame action scenes, but as far as dumb action flicks you could definitely do worse. Statham is fine here, he gets the job done but this is by no means him at his best. The film really lacks cool action scenes, that's not to say it's boring, but there are only so many shootouts and brief car chases before it gets repetitive. Overall this film feels like someone came up with a cool premise, but didn't do the best job at utilizing it to its fullest potential, you can skip this one.

I first want to say that I am a massive fan of the Alien franchise, in particular the first 2 films (and parts of all the others). This film absolutely has fan service stuff in it, which could lessen the experience for others, but for me this film was a success and I genuinely like it. Fede Alvarez has now made sequel reboot movies for 2 of my favorite film series (The Evil Dead being the other) and I have to say I've enjoyed them both, and I am looking forward to whatever he does next. The practical effects on display in this film feel great, and are very true to the original films, there is none of that Prometheus stuff where it happens before the first Alien, but they have way more advanced technology. And really that attention to detail and commitment to the original films and the Alien universe is what makes this film standout as great. The practical effects on display here are top notch, but the occasional scene with cgi is there, and it's frankly noticeable, with that said it didn't ruin the film for me. The characters are all pretty good, there isn't a new Ripley, nor is there an attempt to create one. I did however get rather attached to the character Andy, and is one of my favorite parts of the whole film. I also appreciate that (and I'm being vague to avoid spoilers) they took some ideas that were less than successfully done in past Alien sequels, and did them very well here in the third act, I appreciate that the idea was finally done right. Overall I had a blast with this film, for those wondering Alien > Aliens > Romulus > Covenant > 3 > Prometheus > AVP > Resurrection > AVPR, I recommend checking this one out, especially for fans of the series.

An absolute assault to the senses in all the right ways, darkly hilarious, not subtle in the slightest, sleek and modern but also charmingly old-school in all the right places, The Substance is phenomenal. I have always been a fan of body horror, and this film genuinely stands amongst the best of the genre. The practical effects are fantastic, and the occasional cgi looks good, but is thankfully scarce. The visual storytelling on display here makes up for how unsubtle it is. The comedy was unexpected, but very welcome, this film has the most disgusting sense of humor and I'm here for it. I really can't recommend this one enough, it's going to go down as one of the best films this year, if not the decade.

This film is as bleak as they come, it manages to capture the horrors of the holocaust, while telling an extremely effective tale of the grey areas of morality. And while there are some historical inaccuracies, that can be forgiven due to the impact this film has. Tim Blake Nelson did a phenomenal job at writing and directing this, it feels real and raw. The set design is also fantastic and all the performances are fantastic. Every actor gives a complex and emotional performances with a lot of range. As far as the perfect murder subplot goes this one is masterfully done. The dedication to detail and a believable level of realism really carry this one to another level. This is absolutely one of Hitchcock's best, and most tense works, it had me on the edge of my seat throughout. The characters always feel one step ahead of the audience which adds a level of intrigue to just about every moment as your mind races and tries to keep up. This really is a mixed bag, I think that the idea of this film is awesome, but the execution is a bit hit and miss. The voice over stuff really didn't work for me, it feels like it was added on as an afterthought, and the stuff they try to do with it in the third act just felt a bit tacked on. I also think that the second half of this film is significantly better written than the first half. I understand there is a lot of set up that had to happen for the second half, I just wish that set up was done in a more interesting way. Denzel is great as always, and Goodman had some really great scenes. Overall this film was fun, I wish the script was stronger, and I think this would be a cool film for a studio to remake and reimagine, because the concept is so cool and this film (while entertaining) did not do it justice. This film is absolutely hilarious, but what's more is that it has layers and great characters, this really is what indie comedies look like when they do everything right. The soundtrack as amazing, they really manage to hit the highlights of what you would want from a punk movie. The ending is very effective, if not slightly predictable, but I think that the really well placed flashback fleshed it out and made it genuinely moving. I also appreciate how great all the side characters are, they often only get a scene or two, but they are what hold this film together. Not here, this is an extremely efficient and effective hour and fourty-five minute crime film that has some fantastic characters, a badass script, amazing set design, and an awareness of place that is only rivaled by someone like Scorsese. I want to start by saying I really liked the first Deadpool, but what really made that movie work is how strong the script was, and how fresh it felt at the time of its release. This movie is absolutely garbage. I was genuinely bored throughout the entire movie, I laughed once or twice, but otherwise was just waiting for the film to end. The only attempts made at entertainment is just a constant barrage of cameos, comic book references, and Marvel lore drops. And this movie even failed at those things, none of the cameos felt interesting or fleshed out, they are literally designed for you to say "woah" as the cameos walk in, then they just become 2 dimensional background characters. The story is about as bland and simple as they come, and all the characters felt like your standard superhero stuff. The films attempts at being edgy and adult do not work. And the action sequences are all either edited terribly, has too much happening in frame at once, or is just a cgi mess. The script for this movie is honestly embarrassing, it felt like a child came up with the idea. If you are one of those people who will love a movie because of a cameo or because Wolverine wears yellow you may like this, for anybody who actually likes film I recommend avoiding this one.

This movie is filled with moments of brilliance, it is overall effective in an emotional sense, but you can't help but think this film is more better suited for the stage than the screen. The major thing this film lacks is scope, the focus is on as few people as possible, and when dealing with something as massive and tragic as the Holocaust I genuinely think this film could have benefitted from adding more characters for the film adaptation. As for moments of brilliance, the train scene is absolutely heartwrenching, and the initial introduction to the characters was handled quite well. There is also a scene where two men talk during a break from work that is beautifully handled, and is definitely a scene I will for some time. So if you set the problematic politics aside there is some interesting stuff in this film, especially towards the beginning and end. The entire 2nd act of this film is really bland, it's not bad necessarily, but it really is barely watchable just out of sheer nothingness happening. The whole idea of Charles Bronson chasing a serial killer who kills while completely in the nude is definitely a concept I was on board with, the Austin Powers penis blocking stuff made the murders more goofy than intense, but I was invested in the weirdness of the concept. With that said the ending had a few moments of tension, which was nice even if it wasn't sustained very well. The dialogue here is also at times hilarious, again problematic politics aside, i really liked the script for this film. I am absolutely fascinated by the way the camera moves and is positioned throughout this film. This really would have been a significantly worse film if not for the direction. The way the camera lingers at points, or just suddenly pivots and zooms, it really is magnificent editing and cinematography. The music here is also amazing, I love it when a giallo fully commits to it's soundtrack, and this one is funky to say the least, it at times can feel slightly goofy as you're watching a brutal murder with funky jazz playing, but it works in my opinion. I was kind of surprised at the moments of comedy throughout, they actually took the time to develop recurring jokes and integrated them flawlessly, the jokes never ruin the tension, but make the longer talking portions far more entertaining. I also just want to say that we need more blood in movies that looks like the blood in this movie. I don't believe in souls, but if I did Lars Von Trier just ripped mine from my body and threw it in the garbage. This film borders on being unwatchable, but it's one of the most emotional and well written films I've seen in recent memory. Björk brings so much character to this film, and this is genuinely one of the best performances I've seen. The musical elements are fantastic, obviously taking from classic Hollywood musicals, but sucking all the joy from them in exchange for something that is raw and emotionally driven. The reason these musical numbers get away with that is how they are presented, which is extremely clever, and avoids the common trait of the music number ruining the mood of a dramatic scene. The ending is probably the most heartbreaking 15 minutes in film, it is gutwrenching, and absolutely not for the faint of heart. This film has an incredible practical effects transformation scene, and a fairly entertaining final 25 minutes. With that said the first hour and fifteen minutes are so bland, and lacking any semblance of tension that it's difficult to call this a good film. I had no investment whatsoever in the small town conspiracy / mild romantic subplots. The three or four kills before the finale are all uninteresting and tame (at least in comparison to the final 25 minutes). There are loads of plot holes and everyone in that town should have easily known who the killer was, so all the characters seem like idiots. With all that said, if you like practical effects, and you're okay with waiting over an hour in order to get 25 minutes of entertainment, then this has cool stuff at the end. The storytelling here is undeniably great, every character in this film is just a terrible person, yet it was extremely effective in keeping me engaged. There is of course an elephant in the room, which is the sexual content, this isn't just excessive nudity and sex scenes (which there is a lot of), this is also deliberately shoving the camera into actresses crotches, lingering on ass shots, having actors / actresses nude when nudity is simply unnecessary. And I have to say it's weird and creepy to say the least, I'm cool with loads of sex scenes (especially in keeping true with the real life events), but this film did not keep it classy, and it definitely effected my rating of the film. With that said this film does have some interesting things going on in of story. These kids seem so detached from their actions that it made me feel physically ill, the level of planning and depravity feels so normal amongst the group of teens its nauseating. The script and writing was extremely realistic, it really felt like I was watching these events unfold live. And I also feel the pacing here was great, there is a pretty clear three act structure, a before, during, and after, and each one was structured and paced so well that this 2 hour film felt only an hour long. Overall I'm glad I saw this film, but don't recommend checking out, and will probably never watch it again.

This movie is an absolute blast, it's filled with blood and gore, great practical effects, and a kick ass soundtrack. I only wish they had actual characters, as opposed to disposable people to turn into demons. There are points in the film where I'm asked to care about character, but I couldn't tell you a single character name. It should also be noted that there is a slow start and build up, but as soon as this film gets going its nonstop wacky and gory action with rock music blasting behind it. I do recommend checking this out, because despite it's flaws this film is a ton of fun.

This movie has so much style and atmosphere that it is most certainly one of the best gothic horror films I've ever seen. The practical effects and set design are fantastic, and is shot in some absolutely gorgeous black and white. The opening scene absolutely deserves a mention for being awesome, and does a great job of setting up the tone for the rest of the film. The story is familiar, but the outstanding production really elevates it into something that feels fresh. Barbara Steele was fucking amazing here, she really delivers a wide range of emotions, and her performance alone would make this film worthy of watching. I highly recommend checking this one out, i was pleasantly surprised by how fantastic it is.

What this film really needed was some screenplay touch ups. They just needed to explain some of the plot holes, add a touch more lore for The Prowler, and added one or two more kills to the middle portion to the film. In of presentation, the film is surprisingly well directed, there is a fair amount of suspense, The Prowler has a pretty cool appearance, and the special effects and makeup are phenomenal. The kills are all masterfully done, and are the main reason to watch this film. At times the film falls into clichés and the occasional goofy moment, but honestly so do most slashers from this era, I personally find it charming. A moment towards the end involving extensive eye was unintentionally hilarious, and the film is all the better for it. This film ultimately just needed some script changes, and maybe five more minutes on the end, because it really is an abrupt ending. I recommend checking it out, if you're into slashers you'll have a blast.

The direction here is fantastic, everything feels extremely purposeful, which is what kept me invested. The scares are all very well crafted, lots of well designed jump scares and an atmosphere full of dread. The performances are all great, the soundtrack is great, and it made me want to watch it again and again until I fully get it. I adored this film, it brought me back to my angsty teenage years, and will absolutely be a film I revisit multiple times. The dynamic between the two main characters is what really holds this film together, the writing and the acting came together to have as perfect a dynamic as could be. The practical effects (especially the makeup and prosthetics) were fantastic. The script here is also really strong, this film is really well paced, and has scene after scene of clever ideas that kept me engaged throughout. The ending honestly took me by surprise in the best possible way, no spoilers obviously, but I found it to be extremely mature for such a fun film. I highly recommend checking this one out this spooky season, it's worth your time.

There can absolutely be parallels made to First Blood, but this is a film with a lot more on its mind, and has some fantastic direction and performances. While I'm not 100% sold on the last five minutes, I think it needed 15 more minutes to sort everything out, this is a film that is extremely thrilling and engaging. Jeremy Saulnier is a director I think should get a lot more attention, and while I consider Green Room his best work so far, this is certainly my second favorite. The sequences with action are really well handled, and Aaron Pierre kills it as the lead protagonist. Overall this film is great, and I absolutely recommend checking it out.

This is one of those films I could never recommend to someone, and one I don't think I'll ever need to see again, but it's definitely going to stick with me a while and I'm glad I experienced it. The way this film is made in every regard to the structure and technical aspects of the film is brilliant, and is absolutely an example of the best things that can come from arthouse filmmaking. This is really just a slow burn buildup to a mediocre couple of kills. Every single scene in this film goes on for too long, they genuinely could have trimmed 30 minutes off this film easily. None of the characters are intriguing, and absolutely no suspense in generated. There was some editing I quite liked sprinkled throughout, but that is really the only positive I have. There is also entirely too much dancing in this "horror" movie, it was unintentionally hilarious, but it also killed whatever ounce of a vibe they had going for it. Night of the Comet feels like an 80's time capsule. It never feels intentional, nor does it feel like satire, it really is just a perfect product of the time. And there is also a lot of variety, jump scares, subtle scares, background scares, you name it this films got it. There are so many quotable lines of dialogue, and some absolutely hilarious set design and costumes, add in some brilliant performances and you have a recipe for success. I found this movie really difficult to enjoy, the reason for that is how absolutely stupid the main characters are. This movie reached its logical conclusion 35 minutes in, but then the main characters make multiple inexcusably stupid decisions that will obviously puts them in harms way. This movies whole thing is just making things as awkward as possible, sometimes it works, but more often the characters are so stupid that it's hard to care, or you get some unintentionally hilarious moments. The last 30 minutes are actually pretty solid, and are the saving grace for an otherwise disappointing movie. Absolutely heartbreaking. A film that deals with mental health from the perspective of a blue collar family, that is so devoted to realism that this may be one of the most stressful films I've seen. I found myself frequently taking breaks throughout just so I could catch my breath. Every scene lasts what's feels like an eternity, and the films emotional intelligence and realism really elevates this above most other domestic dramas. It's characters feel real, and you feel as though you are violating someone's privacy by watching. Gena Rowlands performance is discussed in every review I can find, and it should be, she gives one of the best performances of all time (not an exaggeration). The characters are also extremely relatable and well written, which is important as this is ultimately a film that relies heavily on characters as there isn't very much in the way of plot. This is an incredibly simple and heartfelt story about everyday people. And while this isn't as depressing of a movie as Manchester by the Sea (Lonergan's most recent and acclaimed film), you can still totally tell it's from the same director (and I would argue that it's just as good of a film). This is a movie I kind of randomly decided to watch today, and is a film I had never heard of up until today. The film has a lot going on, and the thing I liked most about it is the way it presents its horror. Everything in this film is purposefully vague, and all the horror comes from thinking about what is happening, and the way the film subtly suggests things to think about leads to an almost hypnotic and truly unsettling ending. There are no jump scares, no monsters, no blood and gore, all the horror stems from your thought process and the ideas it suggests. The first half of this film, however, only really works after seeing the second half, which makes it drag a bit.
