Source Code

2011

★★★★

Source Code has riveting tautness and mind-bending thrills that make up for some of the deficient logic in its time loop plot. With just limited set pieces, the writing's ambitious exploration of time, mind, and multiple realities is mostly compelling, never coming off as jumbled, pretentious bits of science fiction. The dynamic camerawork also makes the most out of the cramped locations. The film also exposes the exploitative practices of scientists and military officials that compromise human rights and morality.

Jake Gyllenhaal plays t. Colter Stevens who was forced to undergo a time loop military mission to find the bomber of a train. The film opens in a mildly perplexing manner since the lack of orientation of Stevens' character for the project is kind of frustrating and all the mental manifestations are quite a lot to take in. But the film assembles all its pieces in a fascinating second half that solidly showcases a cerebral action-thriller. The ending also takes the concept up a few more notches for a satisfying, branching reality conclusion.
