Takes a lot of the energy that Berri brought to Pagnol within Zola trappings. This is explicitly a film about quality of people being irrelevant to quality of life as we get a book of sour notes from the heroes of the film as they begin to realize their ability to ask for enough to live by. It’s a risky strategy that I think pays off intellectually as well as emotionally given how everything is framed with fairly parameters such as Depardieu being a bit of a pig.

I don’t believe this ever hits the heights of the other literary epic, but it displays a more consistent quality which helped to develop my appreciation.

The first half is far superior to the second though both ends are hurt by Talmadge’s overly stylized acting.

Here’s another one I can really appreciate intellectually and am sure will stimulate some great conversation, but also find myself at a remove. This kind of illustrated oral history is great and functions like a more personalized version of a Ken Burns film. The story it’s telling as well, due to its rare level of representation otherwise, is fascinating. My problem, with emphasis on my, has to do with HHH’s style and how it communicates to me like a mildly amusing joke which can make you smile and then forget a few minutes later. The experience is much more shallow than the actual product which to be fair is me finding the right words to describe my HHH problem more than anything specific to The Puppetmaster.

I found this incredibly exciting on an intellectual level and gratifying to know that a major Soviet era director can still bang out the hits. I’m a bit at an engagement remove from the film, but I’d hazard that would be remedied on rewatch. As is it is fascinating as a look at unfettered minds toward progress removed from individualized concern. I was going to say humanist, but part of the horror here is that the puppet masters at the least probably do see themselves as such.

The proposal itself gets consummated more or less in 40 minutes. That left me wondering what else the film had going for it. The answer was nothing. It’s also so anonymously directed I had to constantly remind myself that this wasn’t a Sydney Pollack feature.

I’m fairly down with these tortuous stories of feminine perseverance so even a relatively good entry such as this had me checking out early on. In regular ion play mode Stone provides one torture after another for this young woman. There doesn’t seem to be a point until Jones pops up and the film actually comes alive reaching the earth. The lead has reached a stasis in her misery when he pops up and offers her at least a comfortable alternative if not necessarily a happy one. I really adore how the film illustrates her guarded nature as a double sided blade. Even in a positive situation she has to function with cunning on the outside and some degree of lie on the inside. This allows even the moments of insecurity which follow to never dwell on hopelessness. Stone presents what other social violence against women filmmakers don’t which is a complete person.

In many respects the film is like an inversion of The Killing Fields taking the story of Vietnam from the Vietnamese perspective and only after some time allowing the Americans to be present. What’s really different is how these Americans are presented as ugly. It’s a purely comedic take in line with the over the top tone of Natural Born Killers. That first scene with the family had me jumping backwards it’s so explicit as to be a cartoon whereas the rest of the film is a bit more traditionally realistic in its presentation. It really allows the US to be this fantasy land of pleasurable terror.

I mistakenly assumed that Dangerous Game was going to be a gangland adaptation of The Most Dangerous Gane. This is instead a pretty early entry in Ferrari’s experimental narrative as tone poem exercise and as a result features a couple of things that don’t quite work like the family stuff after the first scene. They halt the momentum on what is otherwise a very stressful look into the artistic process purely from a director’s perspective (I feel that often movies about the process are thought through the writer’s process). Throughout the film is running on vibes and I suspect how much one gel’s to the mood of the film which is like a slow tempo hot jazz determines how much a person is going to like this.

The disconnect-reconnect of the horrifying on screen violence (brought to life perfectly by Madonna of all people) to the friendly orchestrator attempting to keep things together is heart racing in a way that communicates some real depth without feeling like punishing the audience. I was recently watching Black Venus and it was truly unpleasant to live in that film spewing hate at the audience for trying to engage with it. By contrast Ferrara and St. John have developed a story that pains and caused me to think about my role as an audience member without ever feeling like the film thought I was a villain. Instead the crew seems to want the spectator to be a collaborator in making a healthy artistic experience.

A truly vile film with the goal of being vile. I’ve felt like garbage since watching it, but that’s kind of the point.

This isn’t anywhere as weird as I was expecting, but that’s to Haynes’ benefit as this is unquestionably his best intellectual pastiche film. Shot and told much like a CBS after school special slightly removed from the censors Dottie lays open some deep emotions in a largely quiet sphere. At times it plays out like a missing segment from Poison, but it is also separate for how it’s really Haynes first time moving away for metaphor or construct into pure unfiltered character.

This reminded me intensely of Davies’ Benediction which I suppose makes sense as another final narrative by a great British artist. There’s a certain plainness to late Jarman that allows the emotional effect to come to the end of the film with a kind of shocking emptiness at first. This is a kind of extreme of that as Wittgenstein starts as a humourous and satirical take on being before falling into an abyss of doubt as truths fall away with not even falsities to preserve a sense of self. A lie can be a thing so at least it provides a source of substance even if it is a bad one, but nothing dries the bones.

Holland and crew really breath a new life into this most Pickfordian of stories. It’s gorgeously shot by Deakins who alone gives this a unique language, but also the script and editing revel in the harshness of the world in a way that feels so real and makes the escape of the garden come across as true to the imaginations of such small children as can be. I was thinking of Blue Velvet of all things when spring blossoms and they see the robin feeding. It’s not the same though as Holland views it as the joy of the real blood and bones rather than the evil of the good.

This is a truly great film whit left me with two complimentary thoughts: a. why is this left to a footnote in history and b. why for so long has Birth been given the fame this more clearly deserves. The answers are probably deeply related as as the controversies surrounding Birth kept it in circulation whereas the earlier features in their parve existence fell out leaving the sense that Griffith was born as a feature filmmaker with Birth.

Since we can now see this as absolutely false let’s step back and appreciate and teach this real first feature of American Cinema’s father. Just look at the battle here and see what a superior film it is. There’s this close up nature to the action that shows from the epic to relay the intimate. That was probably chosen because Judith is a character from the second half, but all the same this choice gives a more real and effective misenscene than the sometimes goofy epic of Birth. Really I’m unfairly continuing the trend by making my words so focused on comparison.

Between this and Lemon Incest it’s any wonder that Charlotte Gainsbourg is a normal person. Also, based on the last two adaptations I’ve seen Ian McEwan must be write some real weird books. Wouldn’t have guessed that based on Atonement.

Birkin’s vision at first appears DOA juvenilia, b it the comedically overwrought sexuality reveals itself as an appropriate basis for a deeper look into structures of identity both communal and individual. I especially found the gender politics interesting as the two leads become the same person as well as the transgender like subplot.

Troell’s thing of using historical figures’ role as a way to develop their relationships can work and often does, but I feel like the adultery drama here is not captivating enough to push the resistance narrative. That makes this a weaker film which often feels like it should be a great one. Kind of like if a thin veil were draped over a great painting.

This has the rhythm of a comedy even though everything is played straight. That tone and editing really ensure this as a more than memorable film.

I really adore this one and the main reason I’d say is that it’s the first film I’ve seen from Jensen the writer which feels connected to Jensen the director, whom I consider one of the best directors of all time. There’s this blatant humour running across the film that gives allowances for absurdity and makes the dramatic elements all the more effecting. Ultimately this does lean more on the dramatic side, but I think that works out well thanks to the starting point and overall structure being so oddball.

Watching this one I found out Miike’s series is based on the same comic as an earlier series starring Sonny Chiba. As to the film proper, it’s really good. A lot of these early Miike films kind of go through the motions, but this one has two big elements that push it past its more rote components. Firstly, the expected make bonding stuff just works really well. Script wise it hits all the expected beats, but the actors really sell their slow bonding in a way I was just taken by.

Secondly, the way Miike presents the girlfriend and all the troubles she has encountered sees a unique degree of characterization for a female characters in one of these movies. Really her role here in a lesser movie would be an excuse for cruel unpleasantries, but the film tells rather than fully showing her story with her as storyteller. Leaving us at her discretion is great and it allows Miike to film her scenes with an abandon that the rest of the film doesn’t contain. It’s a good hint at the kind of filmmaker he would become as the decade progressed.

This is just a fun little thing where I made a simple average of films seen by a director and plop them in based on that. The results are surprising even for me as a personal list of these directors would make for a very different order. The only real standard for entry I’m making is having seen three films by said director.

I realize the length of this list is absurd, but the idea started with the worst list and this idea doesn’t really work at less than fifty and since I like positivity this has to be at least ten times as large.

Also, since I want to make a good use of my time, I’ll take any recommendations put out there and try to see three films by those directors.

See the best of list for more details on this goofy little bit of nonsense. My overall impression from the most as is is that I’ve treated myself pretty well with few directors on this list actually being bad.

I kind of feel bad for making this list so I’m going to try to be a bit more stringent than usual with it. Right now anyone can go on the list, but each year I’ll try to up the threshold until by 2032 I hope to have a threshold of 50% of a director’s work seen at a minimum.

Pretty much every director after Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince I’d say is just mediocre and not bad. Even a lot of the bad ones have some good to great films going for them. The film I chose to represent the director I have right now as the worst of all time I’d absolutely go to bat for.

All that’s to say I’m enlisting you dear reader to recommend some actual bad filmmakers for me. I will watch three films anyone recommends in the comments as one of the worst filmmakers ever. Just my taste and maybe even look into the best directors list to make sure you’re not suggesting someone I adore such as Ed Wood or Andy Milligan. Also, I’m not even going to bother with directors who are terrible for ideological reasons like D'Souza or that Zeitgeist guy. This is about directors who are just bad.
