]]>We all watch movies to experience violent spectacle without consequence. This is one of the best of its kind because it’s about an audience that experiences violent spectacle with consequence. A handful of earnest adventure, then the two kids get their shit rocked by a T-Rex and it’s totally awesome.
My first favorite movie <33

]]>Sally Hawkins is doing a late period Liz Taylor thing here and it’s…. it’s really something!!!
Huge step up from Talk to Me, which is not much different than this one but I found it to be a whole lot more dull. So so close to New French Extremity this time around but juuuuust misses…. trauma/grief horror is far beyond tired but this works best when it leans into Hagsploitation.
]]>Leisl the Novitiate is perhaps Wes Anderson’s best character creation since Margot Tenenbaum. In fact, I would say Mia Threapleton blows just about any other Anderson heroine out of the water. I like this a lot in the moments where it becomes A Matter of Life and Death instead of the usual twee screwball antics. Otherwise, it’s a lot of the same: ornate, funny and tedious in equal measure. Wes must be so pissed every time he clicks on his wiki and sees Houston as his birthplace.

]]>Is it a huge mess? Absolutely! Is it a greatest hits collection? Absolutely!! Was I completely gripped for two of the three hours? Absolutelyyy!!!! A dingy, convoluted, claustrophobic counterpoint to a franchise full of big, breezy set pieces. There are minimal mask reveals, no spy gadgets, no wires and harnesses, just Tom Cruise’s primordial superhuman metabolism.
