Devin Sawa is the Giovanni Ribisi of Jake Gyllenhaals

listen you can say a lot about this movie but at the very least you have to commend the production for shooting a major blockbuster on location and not in a green warehouse. The narrative was suspect and I found the implications of its messaging rather upsetting, but gritty filmic realism is so hard to come by these days you have to appreciate it whenever you get the chance. The Italian neorealists would be proud.
In an age where major $250 studio tentpole releases so often feel like empty calories, it feels like a genuine miracle to see a film/filmmaker that understands the singular power of the Hollywood Blockbuster. It’s big, it’s bloody, it’s hot, it’s thematically rich and a miracle of craft. And most importantly it’s ORIGINAL. This is capital M Movie, the type we’ve been denied for so long.
