incredibly lit and shot and sound-designed, but it sort of has this ego and pretension that I can’t get past. also I cannot work out what version of this I watched despite the multiple times I’ve googled runtimes.

loved this a lot! I have a soft spot for archival documentaries-- they always have such inventive and engaging editing, and this was no exception! also featuring some lovely lovely titles + caption text

I love movies… there’s nothing being made these days that comes close to the filmmaking on display here… and no one is closer to dying for love of the game than Mr Movies himself… 

Eddie Hamilton, my close and personal friend, your wack expositional editing and pacing in the first act is completely forgiven by the impeccably cut final act…!

flawed but so so masterful, wonderfully buster keaton-esque! there’s some underlying motivation here to do with the off-kilter editing and cinematography but I remain none the wiser…

choreography is fire, costuming is fire, lip-sync singing is so good I didn’t even notice, but the brown face is so…

good fun. proud to be wasian

silly and charming and feels like it’s on the edge of evoking some long-buried nostalgia in me. can’t believe kids movies used to have bob fosse dancing in the desert like a snake in them

it had it’s shortcomings but my goodness every character here charmed me! also this literally ends on a photograph of buck and bucky grinning at each other so. anyway, other thoughts revealed via liked reviews as always

perhaps watching this on half my laptop screen as I typed up my short film script on the other half is not what the director envisioned in 1938… but I still enjoyed and best believe I full-screened it for all the fab dance sequences!

last year I watched ROTJ hence this year I watched this. george lucas’ world building goes crazy, his direction of actors on the other hand…..

a perverted magnolia (1999), I suppose, or maybe magnolia is a sanitised happiness (1998)? anyway, lara flynn boyle is radiant!

there are some incredible images in here — part of me wishes the concepts were explored or tied together in a different way, but I don’t really know what direction I wanted it to go in. anyway, that opening scene will stick with me for a while!!!! filmmaking!!!!!

it’s classic status is very much deserved despite having to gaslight myself for the whole runtime because I knew the reveal..!!! also there’s so many excellent examples of the kuleshov technique in here I love film editing ❤️

this was so excellent for me because every 10 seconds some song I knew played or there was some actor that I recognised or they mentioned the beatles

editing is so powerful because george looked like he was having the time of his life here….. it’s lowkey so hilarious how carefully curated this is, like zero drama whatsoever just good vibes and good outfits hell yeah

searched “minecraft movie 2024 mega.nz” on twitter, ed the first link I found, airdropped it to my sister and watched it upside down on her phone as I ate banana bread and she fast forwarded through it to find the funny bits. 1xbet ads and half finished test screening cgi included — the ideal way to watch the minecraft movie!

rewatched on the day it’s set because it’s that serious to me apparently… wish so bad that I could watch this again for the first time — it’s such a cornerstone in my love of film, I think it’ll always be one of my most favourite

not as good as it’s predecessor, but it definitely had it’s moments and I can appreciate it’s different approach. eugene sledge is a very interesting character to me and I wish it focused on him more!!! my main takeaway was that I wanted to rewatch bohemian rhapsody (2018) but then I ed I actually don’t like that movie so

Love this… so so much…. life-altering on the big screen… I love movies ❤️❤️

I think that more films need rolling green hills and little red cars and quaint stone houses and well dressed tour guides and monologues at dinner tables

there was something missing here between all the layers for me, but still a good film and an interesting exploration of creating

started watching this a year ago and gave up halfway out of disinterest but then I watched severance and band of brothers and suddenly it clicked for me so.. whatever that means (I’m now very susceptible to corporate settings and ron livingston)!!

this is exactly like driving through the city at night in the rain and glancing at your rearview mirror except it’s 3 hours long and so much better

congratulations to robert pattinson for finding a way to get paid for being weird and doing silly voices!

paragraph break because that was intended to be a classic letterboxd one-liner but I have to add that I loved the medic-centric episode a lot…. that is where it all clicked for me!! love eugene!!!

anyway this does not deserve this lackluster review, one day I will rewatch and properly write out my thoughts —this is a very excellent series that definitely deserves all it’s flowers!!!

committing to the bit in such an excellent fashion….. this is brilliant

something didn’t click here for me.. maybe i couldn’t understand whatever joaquin phoenix was mumbling or maybe i was too distracted by how good phillip seymour hoffman is or maybe my abysmal movie-watching this month has led to a deterioration of my movie-watching braincells……. but whatever, i loved the score and the cinematography (specifically whatever shallow focus lenses they were using) and definitely want to continue watching pta’s filmography!!!

adore this a lot and as a consequence cannot form proper, articulate sentences! 

every aspect of filmmaking here creates something so tangible and tactile and real. every shot feels so delicately lit, every intercut ray of light or ripple of water feels so precise. witt is such a compelling protagonist to me and I never loose sight of him within the (talented) ensemble cast. 

it says a lot and shows a lot and makes me think about a lot of things.

wow this is so good I bet whoever edited this is super cool and amazing

• Monty Python and the Holy Grail

  did you know that before monty python and the holy grail comedy did not exist. that's right the world was soulless and lifeless and dead before 1975. they saved us all. thank you white british men 🙏

• All the President's Men

  these two are terrific together. this movie is basically just talking and typing but it's brilliant. split diopter shots galore. i am a sucker for modern history.

• Star Wars

  ultimately this most definitely created my love for cinema. i blame you george lucas! marcia lucas you are everything.

• Stop Making Sense

  just brilliant filmmaking and a true understanding of the power of editing and cinematography combined. the use of long shots and minimal cutting, relying on the performance and the band's chemistry to sustain the audience - masterful!

• The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

  a film truly only properly understood when watched in a cinema. such artistry and care and craft going into what is ultimately a blockbuster. the extensive behind the scenes documentation and the openness in which peter jackson and co discuss the process hold such importance to me and to falling in love with the filmmaking process.

• The Fall

  felt bad for choosing so many well known and loved films so i am adding this here. it's a miracle that this was made and looks this good. a lovely ode to the power and wonder of storytelling and how cinema becomes so intertwined with our lives.

• Final Cut: Ladies and Gentlemen

  another left field entry - i just love how this pulls together so many film tropes and highlights how we retell stories through our own lens of the world. a repurposing of so many moments and sounds and words, turning them into something they weren't meant to be! how cool!

  i love that this was created out of archival footage and shaped (and effectively written) in the edit room. and besides that, it's a lovely delicate exploration of maurice and katia's world. with a great soundtrack.
