The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

★★★★½ Rewatched

For all the infinite accolades that Lord of the Rings gets I really don’t think Tolkien gets enough credit for creating a character as unique and as dramatically evocative as Gollum. Serkis and the whole effects team nailing the part is a miracle of art.

After all these years it still slaps. Peter Jackson really got it right. The project was always going to come down to aesthetics and tone, and they are perfect for the material.

One of the hardest-working scores of all time.

I watched this a month after ACL surgery and right when it ended my knee instantly swelled up a whole bunch for inexplicable reasons. Coincidence or emotionally impactful film leading to a somatic response? Who’s to say. Bumping it up half a star out of respect for the possibility that it affected my body.
