Interesting as an experiment. Make a movie that’s constrained to the length and sequencing of an album. Not exactly a music video, but not exactly a musical either. I think the strength of the album outweighs the visuals and especially story, but if you have substances on hand flip this on and you’ll be absolutely mesmerized. It’s a gimmick picture, but the commitment makes it mostly work.

I appreciate that Joe Pera’s act is founded on calmness and dry tranquility but never slips into using the good feelings those qualities invoke in his audience as a crutch. Pera nor his material are “wholesome,” meaning euthanizingly positive, but instead honest. He strikes at an optimistic chord not based in patronizing “healing” or “growth,” but in acceptance that our lives despite their many contradictions, dead ends, and chasms of guilt are still our lives. I'm very tired of Justin Roiland's humor, but he is far from the worst guy to have clout [2023 edit: recognizing that this statement didn't age well lol]. Organizing this special to lift up some industry outsiders was irable. Unfortunately, the experience of watching it is a lot less pleasant than thinking about its existence. Simon Hanselmann's involvement put this on my radar since I'm a big fan of Megg, Mogg, & Owl, and his short is much the same story.…
