I should probably be bumping this up a full star, because its a really good film. I disliked it when it came out in theaters, but I'll tell you what, this thing really stuck in my head. It feels like I've seen this thing way more than twice. Also, Pugh good. Ya know. I just don't enjoy it that much. Had a really good time watching it with a bud though.

It is official, my two favorite crime dramas are Korean. This thing is so god damn tight and punchy, but Park makes so many weird visual choices that keep me coming back. I love this movie.

Funny side note: when I was trying to decide what my 3k movie was going to be, initially I picked this one because I wanted it to be a really good one. Then my one brain cell woke up and I ed that in order to become my 3thousandth watched film, I would need it to be something I hadn't seen before. I felt like an idiot and then watched this anyways.

My dad loves this movie yet I somehow never finished it and... maybe I just always moved on to something else when he put it on? Because I didn't love it. Its super zany in a fun way, but nothing really grabbed me. That title card is effin awesome though.

For my bday I had to throw on a childhood favorite. Brought me back. So many great one liners, so much pizza, and somehow even more camp. The only TMNT product where Donatello is my favorite.

I was slow on the Tim Robinson uptake, the boys had to show me episodes on multiple nights, but I got there. Happy I did cause this was the most I've laughed in a theater for a long time. So many great bits, big recommend. I also recommend listening to the soundtrack version of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence my Ryuichi Sakamoto and then listening to the Main Titles track for this movie and forming your own opinions lol.

Watched with a close bud and my wife a while back and.... idk I keep going back and forth on it. I know for sure that it has dropped off a lot for me after my first viewing, but I can't decide how much. So maybe I'll use this movie and this review to write out an internal argument I've been having.

Sometimes I think that a movie is "good" if it is well made technically, has a goal, and that goal connects with a somewhat substantial amount of people. Obviously that last part is a little loose because in this industry, marketing has a LOT of influence over that. But this movie is shot, blocked, lit, acted, blah blah blah well. I'm leaving writing out because its part of my real issue with the movie. This movies goal seems to be to antagonize the audience for wanting The Last House on the Left or movies like that. It tries to challenge the audience by saying, this is what you want right? But it removes the violence from the screen, only revealing the results after the fact. I think this is smart and well written way to subvert the home invasion subgenre. Then, the final portion, it has definitely found it's audience... I think? But I can't really be sure, it could very well be a Wolf of Wallstreet situation with a portion of the audiences media literacy being so low that they don't really get it.

Now for the other side of this. If the point of a piece of art is entirely built on a "fuck you," arguing how fucked and stupid a genre is, then participates in that genre to prove a point, I think that is a little flawed. There's nothing really here. This idea may have come across as well in an essay. Its a little childish and edgy intellectual without anything real to say. I do understand that the 90s loved exploring how this meta narrative stuff worked, but I'm not sure it really added much. So I think on my usual scale, this movie is solid, but it just feels so pointless to watch and was really a slog to get through. Idk, the more I type it out, the more I think it does deserve it's place, I just think film has moved well past this. Its a bit frozen in time and its a dumb and partipatory middle finger. Haneke has much, much, MUCH better films to watch.

I struggled through this series and felt like I had to go finish it off... but that first hour KILLED ME. Some of the most irritating filmmaking I've seen. After that it slowly picks up, becoming a decent MI flick when Mr. Milchick shows up. Two huge set pieces that go back to silliness, but thats honestly such a relief because of what I had been sitting through. A bad movie, but some editor at home could probably turn this thing into an average MI. I wanted to go home so bad, but it did get better the longer it went, so I have to give it that.

I wanted to watch something special for my three thousandth film on LB. Obayashi+baby Asano was a good start, but the plot that featured a heavy dose of nostalgia sold me. The amount of people who have seen it was a little bonus.

Anyways, this didn't floor me, but it was a fun watch. Very sweet, had some fun quirkiness, and I had a good time. Book it! 3k!

My second theater viewing of this movie came and went without an initial review because I was writing a 20 page paper on it in my head. Many months have past, I'm pretty sure about my feelings and takes on this movie+its meaning, and I no longer feel like writing a long review. Watched with some friends on both trips to the theaters and I am glad to have seen this in theaters twice. Best movie of last year without a doubt.

My favorite one yet

I've been watching so many movies that happen to end this way lately... I'm talking about the big effed moment, not the main characters reaction to it. Idk, its been pissing me off more year after year, like a cheap way to hurt the audience and add weight to the film. Here, I can see the reasoning a bit more with the entire story in mind. The things that sucked about the movie were goofy and fun honestly, but yeah, this is a decent movie with stuff to say about tight knit industries and how exploitation is so much easier within them. Also, the main character randomly does stuff like talking about eating dog food for no real reason at all, so there's that.

This contains like 4 of the coolest stunts I've ever seen AND a baby faced Maggie Cheung.

Great, now I have to watch 9 ½ Weeks with Mickey Rourke!

In 1968, many classic sci-fi movies came out. This was a big blind for me and I was happy to finally get to it. Have to say, rankings it somewhere between 168 films Barbarella and 2001, it was much closer to the Barbarella camp. The main premise is pretty cool, and it kind of makes sense that it lasted this long, but there was A LOT about this film that had me laughing (derogatory).

Also, I think that the twist being such common knowledge makes it hard to really appreciate it.

I thought I was going to absolutely love this movie after the first 5 minutes.... but idk, glad we seem to be retiring this kind of plot. I'll try more Iwai, he seems to have some sauce, but this let me down a lil.

A cute mothers day movie, and I liked it even more a second time through. Unfortunately, there is a Little Caesars the theater and they were advertising mango mountain dew and so I stopped to grab a can and ended up missing the very start of the movie. So embarrassing that I had to tell somebody about it.

Logging this over a year late, but this time its not really my fault!! When I finished the show I looked for it to log, but it must not have shown up on the app for a little bit after. Just saw someone log the other day, so I'm putting it down.

Anyways, this was the best bedtime, watch on release day anime I've ever experienced. It was so nice to lay down for the night and throw this heartwarming show on, watch Frieren cast her fav flower spell, and fall asleep right after in peace. Also, this show ends with some top notch animation. Like, I know JJKS2 people were freaking out about animation through that season, and Frieren might not match episode to episode, but its high is just as high.

One of the better things I've been shown in a course. Read all of Sins Invalid's book Skin, Tooth, and Bone to go with it. Would recommend all of it for disability justice reading.

This movie smacks me up. I will entertain criticisms on it, there's stuff to talk about here, but it just hits me in the heart. I was straight up bawling by the end this time, first time I've ever cried around my youngest siblings (15 yr gap, basically been an adult their whole lives). Weird experience. But kinda heartwarming to let it out sometimes.

Aly and I are on our seventh year of marriage, and so are Micah and Jordan, so we thought it'd be funny to watch this one together. Opening with the cartoon racist Indians, I knew we were in for one of THOSE old movies. This one had some moments, and the colors were great, but it just didn't work for me. The whole bit is that the main guy is just another dumb husband, and he so is, but then bimbo Monroe won't let him be a good boy. It's mostly mocking him, but she is written as the other half of the joke in a much lamer way (like telling him he's so great and kissing him before sending him back to his wife). Just kinda nonsense and most of the jokes don't work. Probably the worst Billy Wilder I've seen so far, but not a terrible watch.

Thunderbolts succeeds in one area well enough that the rest of the movie doesn't bother me too much. The character work! A facet of these movies that I've always enjoyed is the actors ability to settle into their characters' skins over time. Each character feels MORE like their character, and this is especially true for Pugh/Yelena. This is her movie, she proves she can carry a blockbuster, and she is the reason I liked this one.

All that said, it's still ugly a majority of the time (shadow fight at the beginning and some of the totally different shadow stuff at the end being the outliers). The jokes are still a shotgun blast hitting me mostly across my "not funny at all" and my "cute enough to get a grin" bones. You ever write something, think about removing it because you know it didn't work at all, then just move on because who tf cares, this is a LB post? Thats how I feel about my funny bone joke and I think thats how all Marvel comedy writing goes. So yeah, idk, still a whatever Marvel movie.

The last thing I will say is that the character work is so important to the emotional connection these films are supposed to have with audiences. Pullman and Pugh did actually got me a lil emotional at the end, and that's why I'm okay with people throwing this movie in the "MCU is so back" pile. It felt like it cared a bit. While Stan, Dreyfuss, Harbour, and the full ensemble are doing a decent job throughout, it wouldn't have landed at all without Pugh selling the heart of this story.

Decent movie, but blockbuster season is just beginning and I wanna be back in arthouse season. I need popcorn and separation from real life though, so I'm sure I'll be logging more 3 star movies again soon.

I have so much nostalgia for these movies, and I know I'm gonna watch this one again, but man. I have a special place in my heart for it, but this is a bad movie. I had a ton of fun seeing it in theaters, glad I went, but I think that this is officially one of those so bad its good movies and I finally have to stop pretending it is competently made. The worst part of finally being honest with myself is I may have to rewatch some of the sequel trilogy to see if those are better! Bad times ahead. Still love Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan tho.

Pretty solid, good performances across the board, I'm kinda bummed I skipped this when it came out. Some of the annoying Sorkinisms come out, but its mostly well done.

Convinced my brother to go see this with me (he goes to the theaters like once a year) and we had an absolute blast. Its a fun and wild ride, the music is sweet, and its got some stuff to say. For how much I enjoyed it, I do feel like its a bit more flawed than ratings suggest. While I'm all for the criticism of the religious colonization, it felt weird to have super fun B movie schlock in between pretty serious statements. ittedly, that was part of the fun for us, just bouncing around wildly through the movie, but I'm not sure it was well done. I recommend it, its one of my favorite of the year so far, and I think it'll be a sick midnight cult movie later on, but Im not sure it'll be in conversation for best of the year nine months from now.

This thing is INSANE. It treats its character like a pop culture icon without doing anything to make us believe that might be true, it jumps from beat to beat without giving much time to breath, and there are some BONKERS performances in here. This has to be Lithgow's strangest. Also, Goldblum in a cowboy outfit. I can see why its a cult classic.

This movie feels like its built completely off of some questionable character motivation. Rachel is really gonna implode over a guy she's been working for cash? She didn't even seem to like him in that first scene, so idk man. Also, kind of important, didn't think it was very funny.

I have no clue what to say about this movie and I need to write a lot about it this week. I'm regretting my Lars book proposal already, it seemed like such a fun idea at the time...

Okay, first of all, if this was the culminating firefight of another war film, it would probably be rated a lot higher. It almost feels like the finale to a mini series.

The craft, attention to detail, effects, all that are awesome. They nailed it, and it was obviously well researched.

The thing is, there's not really a movie here. They try to pull a Beau Travail type scene at the beginning which is completely unrelated to the fight that takes up 99% of the movie, but there's nothing to attach it to. It feels like this movie is just saying "war is hell," and giving some very light acknowledgement of the people on the other side of the war, but then it ends with some "B Co is the best, they always had my backs!" shit. Idk man, if you just wanna get dropped directly into engagement w the ops, here ya go, it does a great job at that. Otherwise, not sure why this needed to exist. It does, at least, make me more confident in my opinion on that Civil War non-statement by Garland.

Look, in my defense, it's a rough time of year. My ass has been fiending for a theater seat. The bad news is, all the stuff that looks bad in the trailer looks bad in the movie (and I paid to watch something Disney made). The good news is, this thing wasn't rotten to the core like I expected it to be. It wasn't good, but there were some bright spots. I didn't dislike watching it (which is more than I can say about some other blockbusters I've watched lately). Maybe Thunderbolts will be fine, but it'll probably be a 2.5 like this one.

I actually thought that the cast member hated Gubler and his camera at the beginning of this, I was scared. Sooo many fun behind the scenes moments here, big fan.

One day I was avoiding everything I needed to do so hard that I just consumed as much behind the scenes content from this movie as I could.

I saw that this was done by the Grey Gardens guy, and I was hyped, but this is actually just some better than usual behind the scenes footage. Not much here as a doc, a lot of extra moments for a fan.

I had some fun watching this movie, but it did not get very well. The stoned adventure felt a little recycled, and while some of the writing was funny, it mostly portrayed things through the lens of a scared grandparent might see drug using grandkids. Also, that ending, Das Kapital flying everywhere obviously was meant to have meaning, but following it with Aronofsky esque punishment for sad stupidity was weird.

It's hard to believe Japan is this far behind, but then you the whole world sucks and they had Japanese Trump at the time... fuck Abe, rest in piss.

This doc didn't really click with me. It was stuffed full of all the aspects of these people's lives, and I understand that it was supposed to show exactly how much was altered by the war, but it just ended up feeling all over the place. There was some great filmmaking in here, but there was a lot that felt unnecessary.

Still dropping in reviews from a month ago, pre-oscars. Idk, the mad dash to watch every single nominee in all categories meant I had a lot to review and I just did not feel like writing em.

Anyways, this doc was a surprise for me. I would not have watched it without my nominee goal, but im glad I did, because it hit pretty hard. They just casually drop in insane shit like how the church was putting babies in the incinerator to cover their tracks. You read that right. Just the most evil shit out of God's specially costumed golden boys. Idk man, add it to the list of reasons I'd never trust a church again. Fuck what they did to the native people, and I appreciate the folks behind this doc for exposing this stuff for a wider audience.

A film about AI written by AI. I'm tired of this series. This one is just not good. It's a mid marvel movie without the likable characters but also without the bad CG. Idk man, I'll watch the last one, but im glad the series is ending. Good riddance. Took me 3 sittings to finish.

Pretty, pretty, pretttyyyyy... dumb. I'm tired of this Michael Douglas guy, I want Kirk back.

The central conceit in the doc is having a bunch of trans men audition to play Billy Tipton, and then seeing what insights these guys can offer that a wider audience would not be able to see. One of the best docs I've watched in a class, no way I would have stumbled on this by myself. Check it out.

Alyssia thought this was gonna be Nanny Mhee even though we just watched Gozu. Q is just as fucked as other Miike films, but this one just feels like a workshop for his other movies. The cork pop sound is there, the evil milk times are there, the funny editing, its all there. But it just falls apart as it gets more fucked up. Not amazing, but I don't know what I expected from effedupmovies.com.

Just a cute little movie night with Aly, double featured this with Visitor Q! Way more fucked than I expected it to be. Also, watch out for that cork sound. Incredibly Lynchian.

Aly and I took a trip to Portland for her birthday and they just happened to be showing this at a local theater. Thank goodness they were because Erykah Badu's concert was delayed and we drove up for no reason.

Seeing Eraserhead in theaters was really fun though! I liked hearing a ton of people crack up at lines like "OKAYYY PAULLLLLL."

When I started this, this was a ten minute stretch that I thought it might be awesome. Unfortunately, Tom Cruise comes on screen with some weird rinse out hair coloring, looking like some B movie character. After a bit of time with him, I decided that the writing for his character may have been basic, but the major issue was his delivery. He totally fails here (unless you're looking for laughs, in which case, he offers up a few).

Easily the worst Cruise I have seen, and it made me question his ability overall. The Michael Mannerisms in this movie are kinda peak, so many awesome shots and a corny but great vibe. If this role had been given to anyone else popular at the time (maybe Crowe considering his later work with Mann?), the movie would have jump a whole star. Tom Cruise is only fit to play adults who were too invested in their college frat houses. That is what I've decided. I think that sums up all of his most famous roles, including the ones I like him in.

Craziest stunts but I had to look it up to care, maybe the least engaging of the series. Was gonna give it a 2.5 until reading about the shit they did.

Worst plot, still don't care about that villain they brogut back, they've been cheaply riding the "but my wife" character development from MI3, and there's nothing for me to really say has improved. Like, cmon guys, I liked 3. It worked. But they keep trying to tack stuff on (off screen almost all of the time) to make you care.

I've watched 6 movies. This is kind of a wasteland. No chemistry, inconsistent work out of every actor (Tom included). I'm finishing this series, but it did not get better, like I've been told, it's getting worse. The real life stunts have gotten crazier, but it's just not engaging and it doesn't even look as crazy as it really is.

This one started with one of the worst and most pointless exposition dumps about who the bad guys are (specifically the bone crusher dude or whatever), and it messes up basic and easy real world information (not googling SCIF).

Also, not great chemistry, dipping further into bland blockbuster territory, and just not having any real identity other than "Action set piece! Tom Cruise do it for for real!" Granted some of those set pieces are pretty cool, the bike chase comes to mind, but it doesn't make a good movie, and this series is settling permanently into mid territory.

Bigger and more set-piecy that ever, but also cartoonishly silly at times. I didn't hate Renner, so that's new. Also, way to undo everything that the series had been building guys. Feels like a soulless reboot without rebooting, pretty odd.

ALSO! I guess I'd seen this whole movie before? I thought I'd seen pieces, but I recognized everything. The fact that I forgot everything except the setpieces says everything I think about this series.

Okay, now I'm really confused. I recently watched Collateral (no, I don't know why I write my reviews out of order, it's just a mood thing) and thought, "this would be pretty good if Tom Cruise wasn't ruining it." So I wondered if I ever liked Tom Cruise, then I ed Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Tropic Thunder... so I wanted to go back to MI to see how I felt. It was going to be my barometer for Cruise likability.

This movie is actually pretty damn good? Not that surprising since the rating is at the top, but Cruise is totally solid in this. It has an emotional core that kinda works, and if it had cut just a couple silly moments and lines (and maybe fixed up the final act that kinda shits the bed) it would have been an easy 4 star. Even with all that, it's easily my favorite MI. Hoffman is awesome, there's cool action, and it manages to feel both grounded and bonkers. This is what I always hoped MI would be. It feels like it has an identity.

Okay, I thought this was gonna be a set up. I've had plenty of movie experiences, especially during the garbage dump season (now), where I think something is gonna be mid but it also looks made for me. Usually what happens is I go through arguments in my head and I get a little excited that it'll be a sleeper hit. Usually I'm very disappointed.

But for once... this was exactly what I wanted! Fassbender and Blanchett are maybe my favorites? so I had to go in for it (could not convince my wife to , she said it didn't look sexy enough). Date night for 1 and I had a blast. This will probably end up my favorite 3.5 of the year. It used its full cast better than expected, Fassbender made a character that could have been flat feel super engaging, and I did not guess the plot from the trailer. It was kind of the opposite of Mickey 17 in a lot of ways (minus the lead delivering).

This is nothing to call home about, but it gave just what I wanted. If you saw the trailer and your interest was piqued, check it out. It isn't surprise you much, but if you think you're in mood for it, you're probably right.

So, it's official. Bong's English language films are his worst. Don't get me wrong, they're not horrible, and this one was the most watchable for me, but they just feel flat compared with his other work.

The bright spots:
1a. All of the acting, especially from Patt.
1b. Robert falling all over the place.
2. Bong making another type of weird, chubby, little monster guy.

The weak stuff:
0.5. The marketing gave me the whole movie, I wasn't surprised by anything on screen really. That's not the fault of any of the cast and crew, so I kinda don't count it, but it did make the film less fun for me.
1. Hard to get engaged with this one, nothing to pull you in.
2. The writing is kind of weak overall. I think this is the first time that Bong has written solo, and it probably didn't help that it needed translation, but still.
3. Toni and Ruffalo are overdoing it a bit (which is fine typically, the characters just aren't interesting written so it comes off weird.
4. Multiple cool actors feel underutilized and unrealized.

Overall, it's a decent flick, just littered with problems, but the cast and some of the buried Bong charm brings it through. Doubt I'll revisit any time soon though.

Edit: after watching a 3.5 movie, I decided to bump this to a 3. Might change my mind and go a half star up for both.

A group of friends picked movies out of a hat, and when this came out I felt so diabolical. For the record, I did not put it in the hat, someone else did, but I was the only one that had seen Audition.

Instead of warning them, I just watched them get lulled into a false sense of security by it and then the end ruined everyone's day and I felt like I took part in a social experiment.

Anyways, pretty solid movie. Not amazing, but it gets the job done, it's more than just surface level, and it's kinda unforgettable. Points for that.
