It has scares and dread but I walked out of Talk to Me without a clue as to what the filmmakers were trying to say about the myriad of themes the film has. This combines a basic addiction story with a lazy grief/trauma backstory before getting to mental illness, all without ever having anything interesting to say about any of these things. That might sound dismissive, and with all the hype and positivity around this movie it might seem like a purposefully deflating sentiment. But that was truly my initial reaction to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. As a movie, it's fine.
Maybe that's all devoted Star Wars fans needed to be satisfied. Just don't fuck this one up, fans were thinking. They didn't. They actually did a lot of things extremely well, like create really rewarding and charismatic characters.…
