Jodorowsky does Psycho

wanted to like this more, but it never really connected with me outside a couple moments, and the rest was mostly just fine

i love the way this doc frames its subject. in the present, outside of archival footage, she is almost always segmented by extreme closeups that focus solely on her hands, and when we see her face it is usually obscured by the shadow cast by a hat, a scarf, or shown in very fleeting shots in profile. the first time we get a clear, unobstructed view of her face in the present is nearly 58 minutes in.

all around, this is absolutely gorgeous.

THOSE SILHOUETTES ARE YOU KIDDING ME? the kids dancing at sundown?? that final shot of them returning out to sea??? i could watch 2 hours of this footage, 10 minutes is just not enough lol. truly beautiful filmmaking

it's messy and doesn't all work, but it's also such a wildly ambitious swing that you can't help but be impressed, i think. there are lots of scenes that feel like something out of a different and worse movie (like Devara's shower death, the bloody mirror message, etc.) and plot threads that go nowhere (creepy teddy bear, for example). but for every one of those, there are five moments that make you shake your head and wonder why more modern horror isn't channeling this demented procedural mystery/folk horror energy. i reiterate everything i said here. i wish more people talked about this, but unfortunately its proximity to bottom-of-the-barrel fare like the bye bye man and that terrible slenderman movie really didn't do it any favors

enchanting and dreamy. looking for conspiracy, relying on memory and filling in the gaps - a haze.

the way this teeters between feeling clearly parodic and also like very genuine reactionary conservatism is almost dizzying. the protagonist is the absolute worst, a total psychopath, and i do think the movie thinks he's a good guy. he's not even shown to be a good teacher! when he's in the classroom, he essentially just goes "here's the overture of 1812. it's a doozy so, ya know, get to practicing."

also, this movie is fucked up and gnarly and gross - all meant in the most complimentary way possible.

This is another movie about generational trauma, of which there’s been several of late, but this is one that isn’t the least bit dour and self-serious like all the other films that tackle the theme have been. The kills are all great here! I have more thoughts about this movie but I kinda don’t want to say them here because there’s no way to get into it without veering into spoiler territory, and I don’t want to do that.

the editing goes crazy hard

anna faris is able to emote like a cartoon, it's truly remarkable. one of the great comedic performances in film history, i fear

i think this drags a bit in places but my goodness does it have some good moments scattered throughout

the series rebounds from the regrettable FD 4 with the best installment in the entire series. Has maybe my favorite non-premonition death trap of the whole franchise, a fresh twist after basically doing the same thing in 1-4, and an ending that had me absolutely clapping like a seal the instant i recognized the callback. so much fucking fun!

the tactile kills from the first three movies that combine special effects with mostly practical work is forgotten in favor of fully-CGI loony tunes scenes that feel completely impactless as a result. even by this franchise's schlocky standards, the characters are complete drips; there's really just nothing to any of them. and nearly every kill involves something moving on its own through supernatural intervention, which to me is THE cardinal sin for this franchise. awful. wtf happened here

tanning bed kill and nail gun kill were great. rest of this was the weakest one yet. i wasn't a fan of the rollercoaster premonition either - shot in a segmented way with a lot of closeups that hid the carnage. still mostly fine, and mary elizabeth winstead is the best protagonist this series has had yet by a mile.

magnum opus type shit

the first movie pairs the fun kills with a somber story about communal trauma and grief that feels explicitly post-columbine. this one says enough with that sad shit! decidedly goofier and i think maybe a bit better for it, the plot is so dumb and the logic with the baby stuff had me like this. but holy shit is this fun. the rube goldberg death scenes are way more plentiful, and the story this time mainly seems like a thin vehicle to take us from death trap to death trap.

the pigeon death is so fun - the longest fakeout setup ever, followed by him only dying because of the intervention of friends trying to warn him about the pigeons and calling his attention to them. it's very much like a greek tragedy where it's the very act of trying to evade the oracle's prophecy that the prophecy ultimately come true.

i also really enjoyed the elevator decapitation scene. two groups trying to save this poor woman and then each group is only left with a part of her.

it loses points for eugene's death requiring supernatural intervention. wires should get unplugged from something in the world, not just because of death's telekinesis.

i hope that doesn't happen when i fly back to north carolina next month! really fun movie!

i'm trying to write a review but i'm too high. this is a masterpiece

Is it good? No. But did I hate it? Also no; the fact that I didn’t find this to be completely unbearable drivel is enough to make this a film that exceeded my (ittedly low) expectations. 

To be clear, I haven’t played the game and knew nothing about its story, so I went into this mostly unsure of what the plot was and can’t speak to how this compares to the game. 

It starts in a fairly fun way, with a contextless teaser of an opening scene and then wasting no time in getting to the horror stuff (though it actually could’ve done to let things breathe a bit more). The first couple nights weren’t bad at all, and “stuck in a time loop with a bunch of horror movie tropes like Jason knockoff, haunted house, lovecraftian monster, etc" is one I think has potential. Add to that the fact that I think this looks fairly nice and has some legit great effects work, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the first 20 or so minutes. 

Unfortunately, the “answer” to what’s going on is maybe the lamest and also most incoherent possible explanation they could’ve given. I don’t care if that’s what happened in the game, the “what’s going on” of it all sucks. There’s also the fact that every character is a total wet rag with almost no characterization (this is where using some time in the first act to establish who these people are would’ve been helpful), and the actors don’t seem like they’d be able to sell a well-written character much these ones. 

What I’m left with is a movie I didn’t hate as much as I expected I would, but is frustrating for how it has glimpses of something even better than “not quite dogshit.”

oh whoa i absolutely loved this

god awful. takes half the movie for anything to happen, takes itself way to seriously for a movie with this premise, and looks like shit to boot. also, steven ogg is a shit actor; only really knows how to play trevor phillips, and he was barely tolerable and the worst part of the story where he actually was playing trevor phillips.

a total mess, but one that wasn't without its moments. cage is so funny here, spending most of the movie running around and shouting confusedly, followed by a final 30 minutes that sees him just start punching and roundhouse kicking women in the face. i feel cheated that the cut i watched didn't have the "not the bees" bit.

meh. could've stood to be like 1000% nastier and with 90% fewer attempts at comedy

was expecting more of a spiritual successor to tokyo decadence, but this was really tonally different and it took me a bit to vibe with it. it's good, though! surprisingly feminist!

the actual documentary bits are pretty insubstantial, mostly consisting of complimentary platitudes or some isolated anecdotes that aren't all that revealing; there's almost nothing in the way of telling the story of movwai's origins, artistic process or whatnot.

but it doesn't really even matter, because director antony crook understands that the band's power lies in its ability to create vast, overwhelming soundscapes that can be downright trancelike. most of this is an auditory tapestry of mogwai's music, tracing the outline of their discography with the documentary narration layered on top, and for long stretches dropping the narration entirely to let the music speak for itself. the worst bits are the few moments where the music stops for a more traditional documentary style - it feels like being shaken awake.

god i love this band.

the gag is that there are no carjackers in this movie

an utter masterclass in creating a menacing atmosphere and sustaining tension so thick you could cut it with a knife. a question that is often asked is "what movie could not be made today" and i don't think there's a more correct answer than this. totally insane work.

nicely animated. but it doesn't even matter. this shit is interminable and painfully unfunny - just about every attempt at humor flops. the lore/exposition is sloppy and borders on nonsensical. and they flub the "spunky protagonist with a rough exterior" trope (for a movie that does this well, think of something like nimona) by making the titular protagonist entirely unsympathetic until the last 15 minutes or so. the sequel better be a big improvement because this sucks ass

Kelly Reichardt is very good at making me feel immense pain. her directorial voice is so singular.

also Reichardt and Michelle Williams are like professional soulmates and i want them to continue collaborating for the rest of their lives <3

“With Buddy Guy and Delroy Lindo” is such a power move. One of the most important blues artists ever and maybe the best living actor

i put this on by accident because of a funny little ing error in a plex server i'm in, but liked it enough that i ended up watching the whole thing anyway. cute, sexy, silly - i love the idea that ferreri (or one of the other writers, idk whose idea the screenplay was originally) was so head-over-heels for someone that he wrote an entire movie about a woman who gives a man a magical never-ending boner

i think this sucks ass but i'm glad enough people disagreed that it led to a timeline that would give us fury road 36 years later

There were elements and scenes that I liked, but this didn’t quite work for me. Usually when I complain about a movie’s length, it’s because I think it’s overlong and padded. But this actually could’ve really done to be about 15-20 minutes longer to properly flesh out its characters and ideas. Willem Dafoe is fun, and the creature is so good and cute though.

i liked this! two really strong performances anchoring it, the direction is atmospheric and moody, and the sound design/mixing rocks. there's a segment with about 30-35 minutes to go that is a true standout. as a thematic and narrative work, however, this doesn't quite cohere as much as i'd like unfortunately. but between Aislinn Clarke and Damian McCarthy, there are some very strong directorial voices coming out of Ireland in the indie horror sphere right now. i'm definitely interested to see more from her.

I’m not a fan of the recent positive reappraisal this has gotten (that letterboxd average is absurd to me). The screenplay here is really weak. Characters are constantly doing/saying things as if they’ve completely forgotten the things they just did/said, on both a micro dialogue level and a macro character motivation level. Take Anakin’s turn for example - after Palpatine’s machinations are laid bare and Anakin still chooses to save him, it seems clear that he’s only going along with this for Pe; but then in practically the very next scene Anakin is apparently fully on board with the imperial fascist project? Idk, the movie is just filled with that kind of weird inconsistency. It’s clear the entire point of this trilogy was to get to the scene where Anakin puts on the mask, and not much care was put into how they got there. 

On a positive note though, I’d forgotten how nice this is technically. There’s some genuinely good shot composition all over this thing. It looks miles better than the first two of the prequel trilogy, both of which I’ve seen more recently. Sound design rocks too; Yoda’s nails digging into that metal! So good!

- Despite its flaws, this still scratched a nostalgic itch that put me in the mood to replay an old Star Wars video game. Maybe Bounty Hunter, Lego Star Wars or The Force Unleashed? Idk we’ll see lol. 

- What niche minor jedi did my fellow former Star Wars-obsessed nerds love as kids? I was Shaak Ti’s #1 stan.

I love when movies show how a sensual woman can turn even the coldest motherfucker into a puddle. On a related note, the love scene towards the beginning with Wunmi Mosaku is excellent.

best top-to-bottom performance by a cast I've seen in a very, very long time. a suffocatingly tragic movie.

the russo brothers are enemies of the people and of art.
