wanted to like this more, but it never really connected with me outside a couple moments, and the rest was mostly just fine

i love the way this doc frames its subject. in the present, outside of archival footage, she is almost always segmented by extreme closeups that focus solely on her hands, and when we see her face it is usually obscured by the shadow cast by a hat, a scarf, or shown in very fleeting shots in profile. the first time we get a clear, unobstructed view of her face in the present is nearly 58 minutes in.
all around, this is absolutely gorgeous.
