love that the idea of becoming an online reactionary is worse than rock bottom for this guy

Hasn't left my head in five years. A one-of-a-kind cerebral mini-epic. A museum gallery put to film. Turns the essence of story on its head. A film so large there's no room for characters, places or things.

Last and First Men is dense in atmosphere, built out of textured foggy visions of otherworldly architecture that invites the decoding of its context. Cruel, serene monuments are uplifted (religiously!) by one of the greatest modern film scores. Tones of dread rise and groan amidst clacking percussion like the stirring of a mechanical beast. The beauty of the celestial unknown is sung by hymnic strings and choir (sometimes in alien acapella). Exposition is granted only by one of film's most chameleonic living actors, but with utmost respect to the curiosity of the viewer. The film does not drown in the cold and dark of its mood - it is, as the name implies, deeply in love with humanity. 'Everything matters' in spite of the inevitable. In every moment of Last and First Men you feel there is a hidden warmth in this bleak vision that you can't grasp in your time.

To me, use of economical minimalism in evoking fantastical scale will keep this scale freshly fascinating. When a subject is allowed to stand impossibly tall against another, unencumbered by excessive plotting or staging, the foundations of the narrative can for the enormity of the unknown. Last and First Men raises premises and inspires us to plotting. It is speculative science fiction stripped back and uplifted for it. It is a fervent itch almost too small to satisfy by itself - a personality so pronounced you'd swear it had shown more. And it is the standard to which I've found myself holding media that seeks to depict a dark and distant world for its narrative, science fiction or otherwise.
