Will Tomer’s review published on Letterboxd:
I'm a bit surprised that SOURCE CODE doesn't get mentioned too much anymore. It seems to have dropped off a lot of people's radars. Maybe it is because Jake Gyllenhaal has starred in better movies and Duncan Jones has directed better (and worse) ones, too.
But SOURCE CODE still manages to be a pretty fun sci-fi thriller, inserting the GROUNDHOG DAY-premise into a high-stakes race to stop a terrorist plot. Interesting questions about technology and simulated reality are woven into this taut action film, featuring a solid if not particularly memorable performance from Gyllenhaal.
It is a shame that Jones couldn't keep up his output after this film. With MOON and SOURCE CODE under his belt by 2011, he seemed on the fast-track to be one of the most exciting directors around, capable of shooting poignant drama and thrilling action with aplomb. Sadly, he's had a few bombs and I'm not sure we will get another great movie out of him again, though he is still just 47. So who knows.
But SOURCE CODE will stand as a testament to his raw skill, a deft blend of action and smarts.
