I was watching a friend’s son recently while he was home sick from school. Any child of the 80s and 90s knows that The Princess Bride is the first movie that pops into mind as the ultimate comfort watch for a kid on a sick day. How would this Gen X treasure…

You just refuse to be real. What I’m after is Woman…in her naked truth.

A male photographer says this near the beginning of the film to one woman posing for him. His questionable method is to break them by waiting until they tire of posing and surrender to the “weighty secret” of being a woman. Not surprisingly, his photos capture a series of women in various states of undress looking miserable.

Less than two years after the term “male gaze”…

Red light. Green light.

Almost exactly 29 years ago my boyfriend, my brother, and I rushed to the theater to see this film opening weekend while we were in college. The good ole days when Tom Cruise was hotter than he was crazy, when it was still believable that Jon Voight was a good guy, and when you didn’t know it would soon become commonplace to have 7 sequels. This was the last major studio release that would come out…

It certainly has its charming moments, namely most of the big musical productions — the iconic title track, Fit as a Fiddle, Good Morning, and most of Make ‘em Laugh. I love epic dance numbers, and that part…

The Year of Eva Victor

If there is anything right and just in this world, it better be. I skipped skiing this morning to make sure I had time to promptly and properly sing her praises after being blown away last night at the world premiere of her debut feature film here at Sundance.

The tagline is cryptic (maybe a little too cryptic for those who need a trigger warning), and I had zero familiarity with Victor. The only reason I…

Sinners

★★★½ 13

I planned to see Sinners on Easter but the devil (or god?) had other plans for my dog’s health. A week later, I saw this in a packed, stifling hot theater apparently simulating hell itself. Appropriate I guess.

Definitely a capital “E” cinematic Event of 2025. A visual spectacle with thunderous music, lively action sequences, and double the pleasure of Michael B. Jordan. Impressive visual filmmaking on display throughout by writer/director Ryan Coogler and cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw. The epic juke…
