A remake of a movie I didn't particularly care for, despite some actors I like, I am here to complete my Spielberg list (one more to go)...but that doesn't get me past the toxic masculinity of this picture, and how intensely unlikable Richard Dreyfuss is as the lead.
Audrey Hepburn being the first thing you see when you die...I'll convert to whichever religion professes that.
]]>Not entirely certain why this showed up randomly in my Watchlist, but a pretty generic western that's only differentiating factor is a few noir touches. It's not bad (I'm always down for a bit of Walter Brennan scene-stealing, and Robert Preston has his moments as the villain), but it's the sort of western that I doubt you much until you randomly click on it on TCM.
]]>A total delight (particularly Sweetums).
Disney is not going to see heaven for closing Jim Henson's last creation.
]]>This is only the second of the films of Terry Gilliam that I have seen, and I kind of dug it. The movie's absurdist, time-related humor (on the cusp of me seeing the weirdly appropriate companion film, Mel Brooks' History of the World Part 1, earlier today) is fun, and this is a fascinating spin on the "child adventure film" that would become crystallized the following year with Steven Spielberg's ET. I will note that the ending is both bizarre, thought-provoking, and I don't know if it's entirely appropriate...but it is interesting and invites a host of "what was this about?" questions that I don't think another director might have risked.
]]>With the exception of the biggest classics (The Producers & Young Frankenstein), I remain largely ambivalent to the charms of Mel Brooks even if I know that he's got a talent. That's true here, with a lot of the humor repetitive and honestly badly dated. Madeline Kahn is the best part (and the Esther Williams-style musical number in the center about the Spanish Inquisition).
]]>Really beautiful movie about love, loneliness, and the reprieve that one promises to the other. Schell & Mastroianni play beautifully off each other, each essentially using the other for different reasons, and watching as that works (and falls apart) as the film comes to a close makes this feel both suspenseful and romantic. The set design, cinematography, & scoring are all gorgeous. Great ending.
]]>I love Tom Cruise, but I am only okay with the Mission Impossible movies, and this one shows why. Despite jaw-dropping stunts (I don't even want to know how much of what was happening on that plane was reality) and Tramell Tillman showing up in the world's sexiest submarine unit (people in my audience audibly reacted to him showing up on screen...Severance has put him on the map), the film is filled with bad editing & insanely clunky, expositional dialogue that almost feels like a joke. The overlong, hokey, and indulgent final scene doesn't help matters.
The Rolf Saxon cameo was so ingenious that I almost wish I liked the movie to properly appreciate it.
]]>Cute if somewhat forgettable look at the Galapagos and a sea lion named Leo. I will be honest-the best scene in this was cribbed directly from Planet Earth II, and so it's hard not to hold that against it. But the nature photography is lovely, and Brendan Fraser (whom I'm hardly a fan of) is a solid choice as a sincere, playful narrator.
It is insane to me that Disney spends ten years making a movie like this and unceremoniously dumps it on their platform without so much as an ad on the main page (and I have seen every DisneyNature movie, so the algorithm should've figured out I was into it).
]]>A meditative (but depressing...pick your mood on this one) look at the ways that family intertwines, and how we rely upon & love each other without entirely knowing what's going on in another world. Ozu is masterful with his camerawork & editing.
]]>Way more fun (and sexier) than its reputation, the odd pairing of John Wayne & Janet Leigh works surprisingly well in this Ninotchka-adjacent wartime romance. Though the jet pilots on display in this picture were largely é by 1957 (most of these were more familiar in 1949-50, which is when Howard Hughes started to create the project), it honestly feels like you're watching a cutting edge film from 2025, given how seamless the sound & stunt work is here (along with that glistening aerial photography).
]]>It's Sideshow Bob, so I'm there for this more than most, but ending it with the line "tired gag"...we're good not having any more of these, okay?
]]>Okay I kind of liked this one even if it probably doesn't justify its existence (or especially the rest of the shorts' existence). It had a Looney Tunes by way of a DisneyWorld ride video vibe that I could get into. Love the Kang & Kodos cameo.
]]>Nope...this ain't it either. I'm starting to think that playing catch-up on my unseen Simpsons shorts was not a good way to spend my Saturday night.
]]>We've done this twice before with Maggie...it's not bad, but when are they going to give me something new to print?
]]>Possibly one of the worst things I've seen the Simpsons do since Lisa complimented Elon Musk...it's basically just our favorite planet-saver shilling for capitalism with nary a joke in sight.
]]>Adorable, but honestly loses a bit being silent.
]]>The film's ending is so bizarre and the comic tones so out of step with the movie that I kind of wish I liked it, because this is the sort of movie more people probably should like given how many risks it takes. But it's not particularly good, and it's not helped by Jean Seberg's pedestrian performance at the center. I'm aware she was new to her career (I like her in other things, for the record), and lord knows Otto Preminger was treating her like garbage off-screen so I'm not going to belabor the point, but while she looks like an angelic young saint, she is so monotone it feels like bad acting notes.
]]>Watching this for the first time in maybe 20(?) years (I watched it on what was possibly my first date), I'm struck by how insane Bergman's power was in 1957 that he made both this AND The Seventh Seal within months of each other. The way that it fits so much of Isak story into 90 minutes, giving us all of his lost hopes, his dreams, his successes, his regrets...it's gorgeous, and tells the story through characters both ancillary and crucial to how he's gotten here.
To paraphrase The Hours, "a whole life in a single day...and in that day, a whole life."
]]>CGI has so bankrupted the modern epic, watching the scale of the scenes here is something else because you're reminded of how it's SUPPOSED to feel. There is, in my opinion, little in this that Welles hadn't already done onscreen 9 years earlier in of mining Macbeth for new material (which is odd as I don't think Welles also handled this material super impressively), as (like Welles) it mostly gets after the best bits (like the prophecy) while phoning in some of the stuff with Lady Macbeth, the best character in this play. Still-it looks grand, and the moving of the trees...my jaw literally dropped.
]]>One of those movies I love so much and have watched so often, I don't see the flaws (and they're there), or more accurately, I even love them at this point. Grant & Kerr are wonderful in an earnest, no need for cynicism melodramatic romance set against a fabulous CinemaScope cinematography...it's the nearest thing to heaven.
]]>I worry a bit that some of the humor here got lost in the translation, as this had all of the beats of a rom-com, and there was humor throughout, but it did feel like the timing in the picture was off, as it always veered into being generic (and honestly not entirely finishing all of its storylines) when it felt like it was about to take off. I did laugh, but not enough.
The rare rom-com where I probably would've picked the other guy if I'd been the protagonist.
]]>Something happens while you watch The Seventh Seal. Amidst the silliness, the occasional melodrama, it starts to dawn on you that you're experiencing, in Bergman's relatively short picture, life. Life in all of its nonsense, all of its pleasantries and randomness and unfairness. Gorgeously shot, seemingly on a pretty slim budget that nonetheless makes everything feel that much more urgent, it's more than just one man (a towering, regal Max von Sydow) playing a losing battle for his life against Death (a mesmerizing Bengt Ekerot)...it's about trying to understand the infinite, and what lies beyond our comprehension.
Many directors have tried to explain the meaning of life through their movies. Bergman comes the closest to figuring it out.
]]>The first half of this is kind of terrific-Stanwyck is delicious as a dame that doesn't want a man, she wants power and influence. But the writers in 1957 don't know what to do with someone like that, so they insist she marry a dour & dull Sterling Hayden, and of course she goes mad with that ambition behind an unremarkable man. They do too good of a job making her marriage look inescapably boring, to the point that you kind of hope she gets away with everything because everyone else had it coming for not marveling at having Barbara Stanwyck in their midst. The execution is bad, but the set-up could've made this a great one if the Hays Code's demise and a bit of 1960's feminism had been added to the mix.
]]>Genuinely surprised how much this worked for me. Loren & Wayne are such odd screen personas that you'd think they don't play well off of each other, but for some reason they do...a chemistry so odd it's kind of fun. Brazzi is badly miscast as the third leg in their love triangle (James Mason was apparently considered for the part, which would've been MUCH better given the character arc), but generally this is a silly, enjoyable action-adventure...perfect for a Saturday night with a bucket of popcorn.

]]>Proof that not every late Barbara Stanwyck western was a hidden gem like Forty Guns. It's short, and features a deliciously dumb himbo (incarnated by Earl Holliman), but...man is it not great. Even Stanwyck can't breathe life into it.
]]>Gorgeous (particularly the scenes on the Matterhorn) look at sexuality, eroticism, and the things we cannot say out loud (or to ourselves). The film is famous for its frank nudity, which is luscious and marvelous (you have to reach for a movie like Querelle that celebrates the beauty of the male form quite like how Ken Russell's camera lusts after Oliver Reed & Alan Bates here). I've never read this particular DH Lawrence novel (I've read others), but all of his suggestiveness is used beautifully. I do have mild complaints (I think that the ending feels a tad abrupt, and I don't think in a good way), but they're minor. I am surprised that Oscar noticed Jackson, who is good but not as good as Bates or Reed, though it was 1970's infamously lax Best Actress field, so maybe they just wanted a film & actor that would age well.
]]>I think this is probably too boring to genuinely be the "worst movie ever made" but I just wish the camp was more fun. The aesthetic feels so plastic it's hard to revel in it, and were it not for screen legend Bela Lugosi casually showing up for brief snippets, I'd be convinced I found some high school effort the production design is so terrible. It's so famous you have to see it eventually...but only once.
]]>Kanal is a frequently difficult-to-watch, claustrophobic film that rarely fails to impress. Looking at the "war is hell" trope with a modernist lens, it gives us the truly horrifying, grueling ways that people continue to survive even in the harshest of conditions. Hard to believe this was made in the same year that Hollywood was making war films like The Wings of Eagles.
]]>Really good...I liked the remake a lot, but this is even better. I don't know that I ever had proper confirmation that Glenn Ford could actually act before this, but there he is, attempting to steal scenes, and he would've gotten away with it if Van Heflin wasn't even better. Great cinematography, genuinely strong build-up (loved the editing), and adored the score & sound work.
There will never be another Frankie Laine.
]]>Here's the thing-the first Cars movie wasn't good, but it at least looked GORGEOUS. Planes is basically the same plot as that (like, shockingly similar plot), but it doesn't look very good, so it loses stars. This is bargain basement Disney, but it's one of the few theatrically-released films from the Mouse House I've never seen, so I'm glad to have it off of the list even if it didn't impress.
]]>Marvelous, meditative take on the SciFi genre, smart enough to leave so much unknown that it becomes truly creepy. The acting is all fine (Pat Neal is always a good time, and Michael Rennie looks anything but ill here), but it's the effects, the insightful (and timeless script), and that ambiguous ending that make it a (deserved) classic. The sort of movie I'd allow might get better the further we get into repeat viewings.
]]>The film, like its characters, feels in the middle of an identity crisis as it doesn't want to go sharp into these characters, and the ways that they feed off of (and loathe) their own toxicity and codependence, but there's a lot to offer in this look at adult friendship. I wanted more from Sandy Dennis' character (though her long gaps in story underline the cruelty of her fate, and the unluckiness of loneliness), but was in love with the way that so many characters hated things in others that they clearly exhibited in themselves. I see why this was remade, as there's a lot to mine here.
]]>As a film, it's middling, filled with TV documentary sorts of hooks and overly needy narration. As someone who is fascinated by the Titanic, though, it gives you details you never really knew about the ship, and a gigantic visual overview of the ship that is kind of mind-blowing. If you're a Titanic nerd (and I am), this is a stop you'll want to make.
]]>The film is not remotely as delicious as the original with John Garfield & Lana Turner, mostly because it insists on being far more of a conventional love story than what James M. Cain's novel intended. Cora is defanged as Lange's warm blonde goddess cannot compare to Lana Turner's shrewd ice queen, and while Nicholson can live up to this part...he can't pull off that misguided ending. Not as bad as its reputation, but certainly not good.
