Marvelous, meditative take on the SciFi genre, smart enough to leave so much unknown that it becomes truly creepy. The acting is all fine (Pat Neal is always a good time, and Michael Rennie looks anything but ill here), but it's the effects, the insightful (and timeless script), and that ambiguous ending that make it a (deserved) classic. The sort of movie I'd allow might get better the further we get into repeat viewings.

The film, like its characters, feels in the middle of an identity crisis as it doesn't want to go sharp into these characters, and the ways that they feed off of (and loathe) their own toxicity and codependence, but there's a lot to offer in this look at adult friendship. A moving, chilling look at the things we only know in the dark. Billed as a horror film, it's more of a coming-of-age picture with a horror lens, and is the better for it. Beautifully shot and with some great sound work, it looks at the way that we use our own pop culture interests as surrogates for the identity we're not yet ready to it to ourselves (or may never be able to share with the world). The final moments, where fear & optimism dance depending on how you view what came before, are a buzzing way to exit the film.
