Less “I recognise that cameo” and more( from the perspective of an increasingly rare MCU completionist like me) “What if we made a consistently very strong live-action episode of our “What If?” Show with a greater handle on its tone and audience than anything that animated series can achieve?” The two seasons of said show have a few high points and neat ideas but at their worst and least interesting what the haters of this film think it is.
No bones about it though. This does look like it belongs as a special presentation in the TV/streaming MCU stand on Disney + rather than a genuine summer blockbuster guaranteed to make a billion dollars by birthright at this point I honestly still had an absolute blast with it Visceral and effective action, the funniest film of the year not named Hundreds of Beavers, a few ridiculous needle drops that strike just the right tone, lots of fun surprises and two ridiculously committed central performance with Jackman proving he’s still got it (as if that was ever in doubt). Several sequences and gags here are worth the price of ission alone. Might be something of a hot take but feels more honest to Deadpool as a character than the fun enough but slightly overblown second entry.
Just a genuinely great time at the movies. Loved seeing and sharing how much my brother was clearly into it too. IMAX 3D version also has some fun “frame break” effects if that's your thing. (although no expanded AR footage like I thought we might get.)
That moment in She-Hulk (genuinely the single worst in the entire MCU multiverse) where Tatiana Maslany turns to the camera and flat-out insults the audience on behalf of the writers under the excuse of bad meta for only watching because they're expecting Charlie Cox to show up (and the Scott Buck TV seasons take some beating) found dead and buried in a ditch multiple times over.
PS. Based on the one thing I did have spoiled for me before I saw it I think Disney have a better handle on the original intention of Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) than Green Day themselves. Although having just seen them live on the Saviours tour (utterly INCREDIBLE show and one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen ) having that be the encore after a full 2 1/2 hours set it's kind of undeniable (even if I absolutely despise how that song has been commodified.)
