The Horror of Frankenstein

1970

Much of the camp value derives from the apathy of our "hero" Baron Frankenstein, but eventually the apathy of the film itself becomes disturbing. What exactly did transpire between the little girl and the "nasty monster" as she calls it?
The atmosphere and presence of Dennis Price foreshadow Jess Franco's monster rallies. Dave Prowse's bandaged, scantily clad, hunky monster foreshadows Rocky Horror.
I loved how all the major characters are introduced so early as classmates. It almost results in emotional stakes. The most emotional scenes are really any concerning poor Stephan and his lifelong unrequited love for Frankenstein.

By pairing Cushing & Walters, Hammer has given us a Holmes & Watson film in which Holmes just happens to also be Frankenstein.

Social commentary aside, if you love early cinema and the sight of women licking things, then this might be the film you've been waiting for

Easy to sympathize with characters who recognize the importance of their cat.
The moment when a middle-aged man reacts violently to his teenaged daughter's music is universally relatable. The fact that he's a British colonialist and she's playing a sitar gives the moment more power. It also helps me to realize just how shocking it must've been for all those white British rockers to embrace Indian music just a few years after India gained its independence.
