“I love you, Toad Boy.”

This is somehow the second new movie I’ve seen in the past month that prominently featured mushroom-picking, and it is also the second new movie I’ve seen in the past month where someone gets high off of frog juice.

He was totally underused but it was nice to see Jon Glaser in a motion picture, looking eerily similar to F. Murray Abraham in The Grand Budapest Hotel. I had no idea the preshow clip of The Slipnutz on Conan O’Brien would end up being a dual reference.

More of a poliziotteschi than a giallo, although it does contain numerous hallmarks of both. I've seen several mentions of this being not sleazy enough/too boring, but so many giallos are all talking and almost none of them have multiple foot/motorcycle chase scenes with dynamic camera tracking shots in the vein of Point Break. The idea of a guy dressed exactly like the character on the poster, with full motorcycle gear and just a meat cleaver, is so conspicuous that it's hilarious, but the movie makes it work and makes it genuinely chilling. It's also refreshing to see the mutually respectful friendship between the assistant DA and the inspector, a relationship that would turn to romance in almost any other film of this type. The nude papier mache corpse getting autopsied is kind of hilarious though.

What a standout, pulsating score by Stelvio Cipriani, seemingly impossible to find on any streaming service.

Obviously very similar to the acrid Bullet Train, but this doesn't have any characters as insanely obnoxious as Aaron Taylor-Johnson or Brian Tyree Henry's hitmen, so I guess that's a plus, but it also doesn't have anyone as memorable as Hiroyuki Sanada or Zazie Beetz but that's mostly neither here nor there. There's still too much obnoxious bullshit and too many loose ends to feel like this isn't just copy/pasting a lot of trends in action movies lately, and nothing in this hits nearly as hard as the good setpieces of say, The Beekeeper. Still I guess Hartnett's charisma puts this over DOA stuff like Novocaine so it's at best a mixed bag.

Fascinating picture, with Endfield tackling multiple thorny moral dilemmas in an even more radical way than Hell Drivers. It starts off in heavy noir territory, but takes a big left turn in the last 20 minutes, turning into a message movie with a plea for sanity in the face of overwhelming doom. Sometimes noirs will give the audience an out or default to a more fantastical ending for the protagonist, but nobody gets off easy here. So many factors at play in the movie that it will give you whiplash: a polemic against rushed judgment and mob violence, a screed against sensational journalism (almost journalism in general), and casts a suspicious eye on small town/small-minded people while blaming economic downturn for people resorting to criminal acts, even essentially explicitly stating that it's nurture not nature. And to make it even more confusing, the actions of a mob of deranged fascist frat boys will almost have you rooting for the cops (who prove completely ineffective), while a whole town of angry working class people become outraged that a spoiled rich guy was killed. Makes sense in the context of the film even if it makes zero sense on paper.

Features one of the most harrowing scenes in any noir: trying to go to dinner with a hangover while a shitty standup comedian keeps trying to bring you into his act.

In addition to the main guys like Bobcat, you have some real ringers in this like Mark Metcalf acting somehow even more deranged than he was in Animal House (and reprising the angry dad role of that Twisted Sister video he was in), Joe Flaherty playing another kind of hardass dad, complete with a nonsensical wartime speech given to boy scouts, and Joel Murray looking uncannily like Tim Heidecker, and making faces that can only be described as "Decker-esque". Nothing in this really makes sense, like when the injured dog is kicked and then turns up later with a bunch of injured puppies (was it pregnant? who knows?), and that's fine by me. The presence of both Rich Hall and Rich Little led Laird to comment in the intro that it contained "an embarrassment of Riches" which made me laugh and might be the best selling point i can think of.

MADNESS HAVE GONE

Unrelentingly bleak, with a lead performance by Elisabeth Stepanek that’s extraordinary in its all-encoming darkness. Something akin to A Woman Under The Influence mixed with Possession with a plot and characterizations that follow along similar lines to Breaking The Waves and Nymphomaniac, but more grounded and realistic than that suggests. Stepanek isn’t doing a copy or a pastiche of anything, but it’s her own interpretation of a supposedly real person that’s ultimately chilling and difficult to watch. One of the great movies I’ll probably never want to see again.

It’s also disturbing how no one in this movie seems to know how to kiss like a real person.

This movie looks great but the middle portion sags a little whenever it’s just Thomas Mitchell quietly inching towards his own demise. Thomas Mitchell’s presence keeps making me think of this as a reverse It’s a Wonderful Life, if Clarence was in fact evil.

Ray Milland is deliciously slimy though, his eyes bulging out of his head anytime someone almost comes to the realization that he’s the devil…but then they wave it off at the last minute. I love how they keep finding ways through camera trickery to have him suddenly appear in the frame from seemingly out of nowhere, disappearing and reappearing at random. George Macready is also great, in an extremely rare non-villain role. Would’ve been equally interesting to see this movie with their roles switched and perhaps a younger guy in the lead role.

ROMAN HOLIDAY

Dropping the rating of this a little because, don’t get me wrong I love the return of Kittridge, but plot wise this is actually confusing in a way that people always complain that the other movies are confusing. None of them even come close to being as utterly obtuse as this one is, who has what key when and which one is a fake, etc. Kittridge really milking the Ethan lore with speeches and monologues in a way that would make Alec Baldwin blush; Gabriel screaming “Ethaaaan!” showing his first hint of frustration and weakness. Grace is fine but Ethan’s protective instincts and care for her after only knowing her for 30 minutes in an airport is a little hard to believe. Maybe the entire series’ best car chase in Rome?

Paris really walks away as the new character you care about the most; however I replayed that one scene three times and Gabriel’s knife clearly falls on the ground yet the next cut it’s somehow in Paris’ gut, not to be a cinemasins guy.

“How could you dig Big Stoop?”
“Because I'm crazy! This country's crazy! THIS COUNTRY'S CRAZY! I'M CRAZY!”

Almost unrateable, as almost none of the line readings feel anywhere close to natural, like a cross between a bad play and a bizarre novel. Ryan O’Neal seems like he just started acting the year before, as do several other cast , but Wing Ha feels completely natural and at home in this environment. He’s the most convincing character by far and his character might be the most compelling as well (RIP). I’m unable to discuss the plot in any way shape or form, but Mailer has some nuggets of truth scattered about that make this seem like one of the most American movies ever made. Most of it feels like it was written by AI 40 years too early, but Isabella Rossellini screaming about how this country drives you crazy makes more sense than just about any dialogue ever delivered.

Seeing this back-to-back with Top Gun shows this to be superior in nearly every way, with a more nuanced relationship between hero and frenemy (the brilliant Michael Rooker) and a more convincing love story without a lot of the cornball dialogue that hampered the romance in TG. Unlike Maverick, Cruise’s cockiness this time around stems from a deep sense of inferiority, calling himself dumb over and over. But like Maverick, Cole* is haunted by a specter of his father, in TG it’s an actual ghost he can’t live up to, and here it’s a father who failed and abandoned him.

In one of those instances of time being a flat circle, Cary Elwes would go on to star in a Top Gun parody the following year, before being reunited with Tom and once again playing the villain in the last Mission Impossible. Likewise, John C. Reilly would reunite with Tom in Magnolia (did they have any scenes together? I don’t think they did) before starring in a parody of this film in 2006, which mentions Tom Cruise by name.

*I can’t get over that his name is “Cole Trickle”

Impossible not to compare this to Spike Lee’s Malcolm X, especially when this even recreates at least one of the scenes from that movie, and in some ways this will always come up a little short. As mainstream movies go, it’s just fine, but as a biopic, it’s rather exceptional, certainly more lived in and entertaining than Mann’s Ferrari. Ultimately it does feel like a lot of great scenes, somewhat unfocused and searching for an insight into Ali’s character, where Smith is just fine, but I can’t say he necessarily blew me away. Jamie Foxx in particular does a better job and Mykelti Williamson, in his brief role, is perfect as Don King. I think I had a bit of Academy Awards PTSD when Ali slaps Ernie Terrell in the middle of a weigh-in.

It’s just a shame that the movie stops right before they get to the most memorable and historic moment in all of Muhammad Ali’s life: that’s right, I am of course referring to Billy Crystal’s Ali impression at the Dean Martin Celebrity Roast.

I was sold on this as a violent revenge thriller, but it sure takes its sweet time getting anywhere close to that. The editing in the first 20 minutes is very hyper kinetic and makes the movie inscrutable in the early part of it, but it finally settles down and becomes something of a straight sexploitation melodrama for awhile. Ultimately, when it finally gets around to something of a revenge story (the guys who have it coming in this REALLY have it coming), I think the Canadians are just too polite for that sort of thing.

No direct *ahem* evidence of it being actually real but the main sex scene in this feels very real and not very simulated.

“It is the only place I really lived. Her body was the world, the meaning and the purpose of the world.”

This ponders the effect of grief on a person as if missing an appendage or a limb, which is examined both figuratively and very often, literally. Is there a proper way to grieve? People are already mad at the way Cronenberg seems to reduce the act to missing a body or missing sex, but I think it’s trying to wrestle with the fact that so much of grief is wrapped up in chaste obituaries and religious platitudes but neglects that there’s a physical and a sexual component as well. Need and want are both forever separate and forever intertwined.

The two most grandmotherly things that happen are the first grandmother asking Akerman if she has children and telling her she needs to have children in order to be happy, and the last grandmother insisting that she won't tell any more stories until Akerman eats something, and then when she starts to eat, the grandmother starts peppering her with questions.

Another Colbert screwball comedy but this time you have Lubitsch directing and Wilder and Brackett writing, so it's at least got actual jokes this time around. Not quite in the upper echelon of some of Lubitsch's masterpieces, with the main demerits being that it's not quite screwy enough and Gary Cooper's one-note acting style, which I can only describe as "an adult man acting like a pouty Dead End Kid". Also a severe lack of Edward Everett Horton, who they could've milked about 5 more good jokes out of, but thankfully they gave him the last line.

Shocking how inert this thing is, with barely a laugh and not a lot of chemistry going on between the three leads. It is notable in how often the action is shot outside and on location, with Melvyn Douglas and Claudette Colbert actually showing off how they truly are expert figure skaters. CC even looks like she’s really skiing in some scenes, making her the Tom Cruise of her day.

Might have been interesting had it been helmed by Ernst Lubitsch, Howard Hawks, Preston Sturges, Mitchell Leisen, Frank Capra or practically anyone else.

“How are you?”
“I’m dying, how are you?”

This entire movie had me like the “Leo pointing at the TV” meme every single time I recognized a familiar face who I didn’t realize was in the movie, which was about every 5 minutes. I was even going for the deep cuts like Frank Stallone and Chris Mitchum. It’s certainly a sprawling affair full of memorable scenes, performances, tension, and violence, but there’s a distinct lack of real meat here, perhaps due to truncated, studio-imposed edits that cut down on writer Kevin Jarre’s script, and of course all of the behind-the-scenes fiascos regarding changing directors and shooting schedules. The movie moves at a steady gallop (haha) and then finishes off in a rush, not giving the weight of these events any time to linger. This coupled with a tacked on happy ending mostly through narration by Robert Mitchum, leaves little to be desired when compared with the lyricism of something like Unforgiven.

And despite the appearance of many legends throughout, the movie probably gains an entire star due to the presence of Val Kilmer, without whom the movie would only mildly . The first movie I’ve watched of his since his ing and it’s immediately clear why he was maybe the best of his entire generation. A consummate oddball who can’t help but command the screen when he’s on, or in this case, cough up the screen. Even if the movie is not a stone cold classic, Val elevates it by simply showing up and giving 110% of whatever it is that he gives.

Godspeed to Val-Halla, my captain my king.

PARIS WHEN IT SIZZLES

While the other ones might have better set pieces within the film, this is certainly the best finale of any of these movies since M:I-2, which is like, they should be a little more consistent in that department. De Palma's is still the most overall satisfying of all of these, but there are some intangibles that this one brings to the table that might make it the last great one, although I'm hoping that M:I-FR surprises me. Rewatching this and I now realize that all of Ilsa's best stuff is in Rogue Nation. Ethan also revealed to be a precog at the beginning of the movie (Minority Report universe crossover)?

I haven't done one of these in 4 years due to both depression and laziness, neither of which I've been able to overcome, but I'm doing this one now, anyway. Here's a list of stuff I liked that I had either never heard of before this year, or had heard of but it really stuck with me once I saw it. Also cannot have come out in this year. A lot of this stuff was introduced to me through Twitch channels like Movieed and The Museum of Home Video, which became invaluable resources while being stuck inside most of the time.

ONCE AGAIN, nothing is ranked and nothing is listed in any chronological or sorted way.

  • 8 Women

    Unclassifiable

  • Tea and Sympathy

Minnelli gets everything right about being imprisoned in a world that isn't made for you.

  • Cutthroat Island

Always heard about this being a huge bomb, and I avoided it mostly for that reason and it starring one of my main cinematic nemesis-Matthew Modine. But what a dunce I was as the team of Harlin and Geena Davis is once again unbeatable. And giving Frank Langella all of the 90's action villain dialogue in a movie set 300 years ago is the kind of stuff I'm a major sucker for. Also, ships go boom.

  • Female Trouble
  • Compañeros

I'll never get this theme song out of my head, and that's both the power and danger of Ennio Morricone.

  • The Cobweb
  • Drive

Incredible action movie, with a whirling dervish performance from Mark Dacascos, but just as importantly a movie-stealing performance from Brittany Murphy as a horny motel clerk.

  • Hangover Square

Everything you could want in a noir.

  • Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean

I watched significantly fewer films in 2017, but I still managed a sizable chunk of standout new-to-me completely new discoveries like SCREAM FOR HELP and CASH ON DEMAND. Once again, the makeshift rules I have for these lists is that most of the film are ones that I only just learned about this year (and not from 2017) or something that exceeded all my wildest expectations upon finally viewing it. No official ranking, but I do tend to keep my absolute favorites near the top and the enjoyable trash at the bottom, although I felt the need to put THE TELEPHONE at the absolute top because it is neither good nor bad, just something that I can't really quite believe exists at all.

HOO BOY

First off I'd like to thank Laird and Tommy and their impeccable programming at The Alamo Drafthouse for making like 70% of this list possible.

This year I watched more films than I ever have (at least in the Letterboxd era) and encountered more completely new films than I ever have. I also watched more films directed by women this year than any previous year, and there are even about a dozen more films I could've added to this!

EVERYTHING on this list is something that I only just learned about this year (and not from 2016) or something that exceeded all my wildest expectations upon finally viewing it. You know, TRUE DISCOVERIES unlike some other lists I could mention. These aren't ranked per se, but I do tend to keep my absolute favorites near the top and the enjoyable trash at the bottom. This list is downright unwieldy this year, and hopefully I can pare it down some in 2017 or else I might go crazy.

All the old lists you can find here, here, here, and here.

  1. Temptress of a Thousand Faces

The most fun I had in a theater all year. A flawless mashup of caper films, James Bond, Shaw Bros., and literally anything else you can think of.

Another year, another blah blah blah blah blah blah. Previous installments of this franchise can be found here, here, and here.

Once again, what I tried to do here is have a "pure" discovery list, where everything I listed is either a movie I'd never heard of until 2015, a movie I'd barely heard of before 2015, or a movie I'd heard of but had severely underrated due to lack of information about said movie (An example of a movie that's not eligible for this list would be THE EARRINGS OF MADAME DE..., which I had not seen until this year but was aware of and had heard about how great it is since I was about 14). Also these aren't ranked per se, but, honestly, I do tend to put the hands down favorites near the top and the most ridiculous ones at the bottom (trade secret).

On another note, I've been making these g-darn lists for 4 years now and I can't ever crack my likes in the double digits, so this might be the last year I do this (I'm sure you're all thrilled), because what are we if we are not somebody in cyberspace. To add insult to injury, I see these jabronis putting out a list for the first time this year, with only 10 entries or something, and boom: automatic 20+ likes. A person can only tolerate so much before they break.

Anyway, happy new year!

It's a little late, but here lies my feeble attempt to complete the initial 31 films I had planned out, but fell drastically short due to time constraints and availability. Here's what I watched instead, including scary short films and cartoons because, honestly, who's going to tell me no? I also included TRICK OR TREAT even though I watched it on Sept. 29th, but it seems appropriate as an appetizer regardless. I was able to work in a Christopher Lee memorial screening, but not a Wes Craven one, and I will regret this till my dying day.

Movies that escaped my cold grasp this year: LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH, VALERIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS, SHIVERS, IT'S ALIVE, ZOMBIE (Fulci), LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN, THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN, THE DEADLY SPAWN, THE STUFF, ANGUISH, SOCIETY, CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, BURIAL GROUND, CRAWLSPACE (1986), DEAD OF NIGHT, ONIBABA, KURONEKO, GANJA & HESS, MADHOUSE, CHOPPING MALL, THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS, FRIGHT NIGHT, HUMAN EXPERIMENTS, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS

Another year, another one of these. The previous lists can be seen here and here.

Once again, the criteria for this list is any film I was either not aware of its existence until this year or was only vaguely aware of its existence, until the viewing of said film left me pleasantly surprised (if that sentence makes any sense to you whatsoever). The films on this list run the gamut from established masterpieces to undiscovered masterpieces to accidental masterpieces to extremely "entertaining" masterpieces (probably trashy or sleazy). None of these films are from 2014, per the criteria, and this year I saw so many new films I decided to expand the field by 15. All of these are first-time viewings and are not in any particular order (pay NO attention to the numbers).

Despite my best efforts, I wasn't able to see as many films in the theater this year as I had hoped, so only about half of these were seen at the cinema. On the plus side, I found a lot of gems at the video store (usually Vulcan Video) this year to make up for it.

The winter season always makes me want to curl up in front of a fire, get a warm blanket, a cup of hot cocoa, and watch men and women on horses gun each other down in spectacular fashion. As per tradition, this year is no different: something about the blustery winter air makes me want to retreat to the desert. Since the cold weather lasts a long time, I plan on watching Westerns all the way through January, and I've also made more realistic goals, so as to avoid a repeat of the Shocktober I couldn't finish. All of these are new to me except the last 3, which I wanted to revisit.

A Shocking October List 1681z https://letterboxd.sitesdebloques.org/timcop/list/a-shocking-october-list/ letterboxd-list-395915 Wed, 17 Sep 2014 04:49:03 +1200 <![CDATA[

Since everyone seems to be planning their lists for the holiday of Shocking October (also known as Shock Jock October), I thought I would get in on the action with a little list of my own. I'm basing the contents of this list on a variety of factors, including: 1.) screenings around town over the course of the month, 2.) whatever Joe has in his library that I can watch for free, and 3.) the few movies I'll rent because I'm dying to see them.

**EDIT**
Due to over-booking on movies, and the ceaseless addition of movies not on previous schedules I had to alter this drastically as I didn't get around to watching half of the original movies. But I did add about 10 extra onto the original list, so it worked out. Movies missed: THE THING, THE MANSION OF MADNESS, SEEDING OF A GHOST, WACKO, HALLOWEEN III, DEATH BECOMES HER, ALTERED STATES, THE MAN WHO LAUGHS, DRACULA A.D. 1972, PULSE, AUDITION, THE FLY, and THE FLY.

  1. Possession
  2. Kwaidan
  3. Amuck!
  4. House
  5. Blood for Dracula
  6. Creature with the Blue Hand
  7. Night of the Living Dead
  8. Rosemary's Baby
  9. Pink Floyd: The Wall
  10. The Guest

This is an ongoing list of every movie I've ever seen at the Paramount Theatre in Austin over the past 7 years as a part of their annual Summer Classics series (and a couple from their winter series). In no particular order, just as I seeing them. 1-113 are films seen at the Paramount in 35mm or 70mm while 114 - 129 are films seen next door at the Stateside and in D.

**UPDATE**
This list now consists solely of films seen at The Paramount. I didn't like having to drag the movies every time, so there.

  1. His Girl Friday
  2. Dodsworth
  3. Jaws
  4. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
  5. The Red Shoes
  6. Touch of Evil
  7. The Third Man
  8. The Lady from Shanghai
  9. Psycho
  10. Strangers on a Train

This list is probably my favorite list to make, since I don't have to worry about rankings or position and it's more just "here's some movies I really liked". I even enjoy it so much I nearly doubled it from last year's. From the sublime and artful to the batshit crazy, all of these were films I thoroughly enjoyed viewing (most of them in a theater!) and are highly memorable in one way or another.

It goes without saying: none of these are 2013 films and all of them are first time-movie experiences.

  1. Straight Time
  2. Streetwise
  3. The Silent Partner
  4. Gold Diggers of 1933
  5. Le Doulos
  6. Who Can Kill a Child?
  7. Heaven's Gate
  8. Night of the Creeps
  9. Johnny Guitar
  10. Body Heat

Pretty self-explanatory. These are all movies I'm fairly certain I've seen, but I can't much about them and I can't imagine ever revisiting them unless I have kids someday*.

There has rarely been a year for me cinematically like 2012. Movies that I had no idea even existed went on to become all-time favorites, making me giddy at the thought of introducing them to others who, like me, might otherwise never see them. Others are films that either had a bad or negative reputation that surprised me with how well-crafted and compelling they actually were.

Thanks to the Paramount Theater and most importantly, THE ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE, I was fortunate enough to view most of these in the theater, being absolutely bowled over by cinematic visions I had never before thought possible. All of these are pre-2012 films and some were even once-in-a-lifetime screenings.

  1. Possession
  2. House
  3. Wings of Desire
  4. Bend of the River
  5. Rolling Thunder
  6. Mystery Train
  7. Lifeforce
  8. Cluny Brown

  10. World on a Wire

Unfortunately, this list had to be edited for time.

I realize this is a weird mixture of low-brow and high-brow, but so am I??? Ambiguity.

The contents of this list are subject to change at any time. Like, tomorrow.
