This film’s got… something… going on. It’s weirdly cast and it doesn’t know if it’s a heartwarming mainstream drama/comedy or a dark arthouse roovie but it’s got… something… going on. It’s like that friend that you know got serious problems and is far from from perfect that you just really like none the less. I’ll add half a star for the excellent cinematography and cameos by John Waters and Angelyne (!). And because this maligned flop movie is way better than its reputation and needs a little love. Give it a chance.

I hate Queen’s music so i’m definitively not the target audience for this. What can I say, it was on HBO and I was bored. The music aside this was just another souless, sexless, sanitized biopic. An extraordinary, intelligent, dark, dazzling one of a kind movie, ripe for rediscovery after being unavailable for the last 30 or so years. The juxtaposition and montage technique are unlike anything i've seen before and still feel modern and creates an unique kind of, almost scientific surrealism that has very little in common with, say, with Buñuel or Lynch. Very cheap (you will never see a faker bat or a less convincing shipwreck than what this film offers) but surprisingly entertaining gothic. I actually liked it a lot.
