I never read the books, so the critique of religion’s capacity to galvanize and control people as a tool for colonialism had me shook.
It reminds me of how early Americans used Christianity to control enslaved people for labor, only for those same peoples to use the Bible as a justification for abolition a hundred years later. These kind of parallels can only be made when sci-fi is doing its job, and apparently Frank Herbert was on his shit and Villeneuve wanted to highlight that.
I could easily see myself going for the full Monty and adding a half star upon a second viewing. So yeah. I deeply fucked with this film.
