I hate giving movies ratings this low (it’s even become a running joke on the After Credits Podcast), so many people worked on this project to make it a reality and shitting on something a group of people dumped a good portion of their time into isn’t something I enjoy. But holy shit man, this movie is fucking ass. Every single character is stripped to the basics of high school horror tropes and given nothing to stand on as individuals, plopped into a lifeless script and world, and paced like they just wanted to get it over with. It’s a hard watch. Don’t fall for the fun throwback needle drops, they’re trying to distract you. The only redeeming quality I found here was the effects department. The kills were pretty solid, nothing new but graphic. I hope every individual involved is given a chance down the road to prove they have more in them than this.

A few things you can count on when watching John Carpenter films are the score absolutely ripping, the effects being fun, and a ton of tongue in cheek humor. Wow. Kind of kicking myself in the ass for not seeing this in theaters. I have never been a fan of espionage movies or stories of any kind, but the trailer did Black Bag a disservice. Steven Soderbergh’s film is totally different than it was presented, it’s a 90 minute (excluding credits), taut, steamy, whodunnit combined with aspects of an espionage thriller. The confrontational tension created by Soderbergh here is the kind that some directors strive to hit but cannot even achieve in 2+ hours. Obviously having Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett do the heavy lifting is a deadly, almost unfair, combination, they’re electric.

Rewatching Castle in the Sky made me realize it is so much funnier than I gave it credit for originally. There are so many moments of genuine comedy that land perfectly that I missed completely every other time I’ve seen it. As every time I watch a Ghibli movie, I yearn for this animation style to make a return, there’s a gorgeous aspect I can’t put my finger on that hits home. Could be nostalgia, could be the fact it’s hand drawn, I don’t know but there’s something I love dearly about that style. While Castle in the Sky isn’t my favorite Ghibli film, the score by Joe Hisaishi is my favorite (A Sea of Clouds in the Moonlight is one of my favorite pieces of music ever created, period). He creates a feeling of magic and enchantment while also being mysterious and ominous. Truly, the man deserves so much more credit than he gets. But all that said, I still don’t like this movie all that much. It’s an easy watch because of the score and animation style but there’s nothing in the story or characters that captures me in any way.

Definitely thinking of taking my nose piercing out due to multiple scenes here, we’ll see where how I feel in the coming days. What I love about Bloodline is the fact it keeps the very basic formula of the others but tweaks it just enough to feel fresh. There is a ton of comedy tossed into the mix to go with the classic outlandish deaths, a few of which had me moving around in my seat. Lipovsky and Stein made this feel like their own film, yet fitting perfectly into the rest of the franchise. A huge part of that is just the characters themselves. I think for the first time in the franchise I felt empathy for the characters? Granted there were characters throughout the franchise in individual movies I’ve cared for, but here the entire cast of characters gains that feeling from me, making their deaths feel worse. Let me just say, Bobby ain’t deserve to go out like that! As much fun as Bloodline was, seeing Tony Todd on screen, and hearing the words he said, made me bawl. I’m not talking a quick choked back sniffle, a welling of tears beat back by blinking lashes, no. I mean full on sobbing. Thankfully there were only 4 others in my theater and I could hear them weeping along with me. It was a wholesome moment in an otherwise chaotic film. Now I’ve been singing its praises for a while, and that’s for good reason, but there are flaws. None that ruined my experience but ones that were hard to ignore. First is the grotesque CGI. There were moments here where I thought maybe the film wasn’t finished. I know the deaths are so cartoonish they almost have to be CG slop, but there were just moments of “scenic beauty” that were horrendous CG monstrosities. Lastly, as expect, the acting is top tier but everybody is serviceable and it’s a Final Destination movie so I’m not looking for anything stellar but there are quite a few eye rolling-ly hard moments to watch. Call it recency bias, but holy shit this might just be the best entry in the entire franchise.

I’ll it I was one of the 6 people who watched That 90s Show, and I’ll also it it’s not very good but it attempted to fill the hole in my heart since That 70s Show ended. Of all the young cast of That 90s Show, I thought Sam Morelos had the most potential and seeing her in action with a more mature script and more mature actors showed me that she can hang. My biggest issue with movies like this though, is the fact when everything is about to end, the cards weren’t in these characters favors, in walks a character that was introduced only two scenes prior that saves the day with exactly what they need. Endings like that suck the air out of the room for me, but that’s doesn’t negate the laughter and heart felt moments that make it a worth while streaming experience.

The film wants to be a goofy slasher and it gets there but much later than it should have. I really enjoy the comedy that’s more saturating the film toward the end rather than the front two acts which feel like are tiptoeing being a comedy. Thunderbolts* rocks. Plain and simple. There are obvious hiccups where Marvel’s formula or preferences peek through but overall there’s something of a unique idea here from Jake Schreier. Unlike other Marvel films, Thunderbolts* is trying to say something. Now, it’s not handled with the most nuanced of touches or resolved perfectly but it’s something fresh, new, and haunting. Marvel clearly left their comfort zone and allowed more darkness and fun into the mix. There are of course moments where Marvel’s classic humor trickles in and the action, at times, takes on a video game like quality, but Thunderbolts* is a massive leap in the right direction for their future. The Sentry has always been one of my favorite characters in the Marvel comics although his appearances are sporadic. Seeing Lewis Pullman bring him to life was great, I had my doubts cause I’m not overly familiar with his work and what I’ve seen I don’t love but this was fantastic work. The entire cast top to bottom rocks, but Pullman and Pugh stand out among the crowd. Pugh had me in tears multiple times, she is and always will have the juice. Incredible.

Netflix has a legit banger on their hands with Havoc and it’s in not small way thanks to Gareth Evans and his love for the action genre. Havoc is one of the most blood-soaked action flicks I have ever seen, that doesn’t inherently make it “good”. What causes it to stand tall among other action movies(and most Netflix projects) is the fact we can feel Evans all over this thing. He has such a profound knowledge and clear love of this hyper violent style of film which is evident by the way he captures everything happening. Every time something pops off it is to the maximum extent, Evans pushes the pedal down and through the floor but under any other director I think it’d feel chaotic in the worst way possible. Evans knows how to shoot a scene so it feels unhinged but clear to follow. While the action is eye-popping and the film edited and captured to the max capability, it doesn’t hurt that Tom freakin’ Hardy is heading up the film. Dude is never giving less than 100% and that’s no different here. He’s scummy, grimy, yet understandable?? Havoc is undeniably a fun time, Evans knows what he’s doing and it feels authentically his own.

I have no relationship to the IP, so I went in fully blind with no expectations and no clue how much they lifted right from the game and put on the screen. But it feels like there was the most loose possible narrative the writers could think of instead of just having this be a mindless death pit which would’ve been more fun, getting the backstory really sucked the oxygen out of my experience. I will say, I chuckled more than I expected, there is a crazy amount of dark humor that all plays out wonderfully. Partly due to solid editing, but mostly due to some great reads by the actors, who I struggled to watch do much else.

So you’re reading this thinking “dude had almost nothing nice to say but still gave it 2.5?” that’s because I might not have enjoyed the acting but this is the exact slop 13 year old me would’ve eaten up holed up in my room on Friday night rather than seeing my friends. I had fun just seeing a bad but memorable film, that’s what horror used to be and part of me, in leaving the theater, yearns for more sloppy, death driven, storyless horror films. Drop is a prime example of how editing makes or breaks a film. The premise itself is almost a whodunit mixed with a dash of thrills but there’s a clear lack of actual thrills for most of the movie so Landon leans heavily, and I mean HEAVILY, on the editing to make things seem sharper and quicker, it’s to a headache inducing effect. But frankly, outside of that he is cooking here, folks. His decisions outside of the editing make this worthwhile. Brandon Sklenar could have chemistry with a brickwall so it’s no surprises there. Meghann Fahy is all over the place and it works. She brings that frantic energy to life in such a palpable way. The Wedding Banquet isn’t at all what I expected it to be, which isn’t a bad or good thing it’s just to say that I was surprised. I expected far more comedy, maybe bigger, outlandish moments with the obvious drama of entanglement but it wasn’t that at all. Instead what Andrew Ahn presents is something far more quiet and conversation driven with more nuance and a bit of natural comedy giving the film a realistic feel. From time to time the jokes felt dusty and lame, but they were peppered in with care for each situation, never feeling shoehorned. Maybe a little cliche but never unrealistic or wrong. And many of them land as intended.

Lily Gladstone is rock freakin solid here, her body language and facial expressions do so much work which go hand in hand with the more serious tone of Ahn’s vision. Youn Yuh-jung is also stellar. Her character is sobering, often reeling the film in whenever Ahn needs to re-center from something frantic or silly (like hiding any objects that could be deemed “gay” in the house, which was quite funny!). Her character’s arc is full, alive, and the most moving because she has the furthest to go while a few of the other characters feel as if they’re spinning their wheels. As far the performances go, they are all over the place. There are flashes of great acting followed by high school theater performances. I’m not saying that to be an asshole or mean, I know the cast is capable of reaching a higher standard because I’ve witnessed it within the movie already, yet they can’t seem to hold it together for the entire runtime. It makes for a very up and down experience.

Speaking of that, the first forty minutes or so feel stuck, sluggish, repetitive maybe? They weren’t a chore to get through but were fully felt. I’m sure that is the point, these characters all have so much going on in their lives but feel stationary and that’s what they’re trying to break free from, they’re all trying to work toward something but are held back for one reason or another but it was tiring just watching it play out. Once Grandmother shows up, things start to progress in the right direction. I would say the final act is easily the strongest portion of the movie. Which goes to show the slow, plodding first two acts actually do their job as Ahn intended, building strong legs. A single scene between Grandmother and Min moved me to tears. It was these softer, quieter emotional moments that rang true and connected with me rather than these loud awkward emotional moments that came across as melodramatic. Ahn is playing with culture, their standards, outside pressure, the LGBT community and fitting in within those cultural standards. All of those are played out much better when it’s the softer side rather than the theatrical, almost cartoonish emotional moments.

I also must say the movie successful made me miss my time in Seattle.

Overall, the film is a rollercoaster. So many aspects work at such a high degree then it’s followed up by moments so low. But I’ll say this, those highs are worth every single low moment because what Ahn is saying lands succinctly.

Kyle’s Favorite Movies of All Time

Let me say, I’ve had a long week and a long day and this movie sucked out the very last bit of brain juice I had in me so if the review feels wonky, that’s because it is!

Ryan Coogler has created his magnum opus with Sinners. His direction and command over the film is felt everywhere. There are so many moments that feel like they should come across as cliche but with his deft touch, Coogler makes them feel authentic. He never lets you rest, every moment means something and pushes everything forward, the over two hour runtime cruises by thanks to that. I’ve always liked Michael B. Jordan but this performance was intoxicating and create a new found love in me. My biggest issues comes with the ending, which is how I feel about most vampire flicks because they almost never feel fully satisfying. But what Coogler has created here is masterful, compelling, and at times genuinely scary.

Wow. Magazine Dreams is a very damaged portrait of a very damaged man in a very damaged society. Presenting themes ranging from celebrity worship as well as the pursuit of attaining that status yourself. Coupled with that are dense and complex themes that are only shown to compound the larger picture. Jonathan Majors is incredible here, I was transfixed by his ability to really become this character. I hesitate singing the man’s praises due to his domestic situation but I haven’t stayed as informed on that subject as I should and that’s on me. But he truly is next level within this character. Killian Maddox is the type of character role that changes an actor forever. Elijah Bynum forces us to sit with these wholly uncomfortable moments on purpose but they may stretch on slightly too long out lasting their potency resulting in a good movie that edges just beyond “too much” at times.

First things first, Pride & Prejudice looks astounding. The symmetry in some shots had my jaw on the floor, almost every scene is gorgeous and picturesque. Since the film is just a bit over two hours I really thought I’d feel the runtime somewhere but Joe Wright kept the pace pushing with little downbeats, almost to a fault in some moments where I felt we could slow down. Regardless, I was shocked when I paused the film to let my dogs outside to see I only had 20 minutes left. All that said, I do feel tension between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, certainly, but their building of love was almost entirely lost on me. I didn’t feel the connection as deeply as everybody else seems to have felt it. Even with that I still enjoyed the film overall which was a nice surprise since I didn’t really want to watch it but was more forced by my fiancée.

Viola Davis is amazing, she can do so much with so little, being dazzling and tricky. There are moments here and there that work and tension in the needed moments but for every cool moment there are two or three eye rolling ones that drag you back into the mud, negating the coolness. The action is bland, mindless, and flare-less and it looks like shit. There are a ton of familiar faces tossing around buzzwords like deepfake and cryptocurrency building a bland plot and story that mean nothing. An absolute all timer.

There is something here for everybody and for all ages. The humor scratches that adult humor while going over kids heads but is obviously stuffed with child friendly humor. Character, charisma, and personality ooze from every corner of the project. While a ton of Disney films hit very similar themes none of them have it as baked into and ingrained in their stories blood as Lilo & Stitch. Also, it’s just quotable as hell. The amount of out of pocket quotes that could be ripped from this is unreal! BRB GETTING OHANA TATTOOED ON MY KNUCKLES

For a disclaimer, my viewing experience was horrendous. Shout out to the awesome staff at the theater, but it’s impossible for me to write this without acknowledging my shitty experience possibly impacting my feeling toward the movie. Anyway, on to the review!

Hell of a Summer has a lot going for it: Summer camp horror, comedy, distinct (even if flat) characters, and a love for its genre. But it also has a lot working against it: anti-climactic reveal, a climax that feels rushed and flat, and kills that leave a ton to be desired. I had fun for the most part but I was checking my watch. I will be revisiting the movie as soon as possible because I truly believe I may have a better time with the film if my viewing experience is better.

There’s a raw, honest, blemished quality in her films that is haunting but beautiful and moving at the same time, Lords of Dogtown is nothing different. Wow. This was a tough watch for many reasons. I think at the forefront it’s the editing, I am not a fan of the style of editing used. Put frankly, it gave me a headache. The saving grace of the film is that it feels massive, like a huge sweeping film should feel. Djimon Hounsou is stellar, Ledger doesn’t have a single bad or great moment, he mostly coasts but his coasting is most people’s max capability. I think the biggest bummer is that Kapur makes this film feel absolutely massive but so underwhelming. There was great promise here that never breached the surface.

Monster’s Ball is nuanced, subtle, and in a way, very bleak. Grief, it’s all encoming hold and racism in a macro and micro environment meld together in story that is uplifted by superb acting from the two leads, Halle Berry and Billy Bob Thornton, and the ing actors around them. It’s very unfortunate that the writing and story itself don’t have the power behind them to stick the landing.

Terry Gilliam is the perfect director for this (Tim Burton would have killed it too), his commitment to getting the look and production right was necessary to make this film work. It’s truly unfortunate that there isn’t a real Gilliam tone though. It lacks the over the top humor that stamp his films, the outlandishness. That’s not to say there aren’t moments that tickled my funny bone, there were a few but there’s a shocking lack given his track record. Heath Ledger and Matt Damon are solid and work well together, and seeing Lena Headey as a badass was fun. But overall the movie just keeps adding and adding layers that by the end, the film feels unconnected and overstuffed.

What an outstanding ensemble here! The collective performances are something to behold. I will it that the characters themselves aren’t very deep or interesting, but the performances still bring them all to life. Great stuff! Most of the comedy hits, but there are some issues with balancing that comedy with the shoehorned sentimental aspects that keep arising but ring hollow. That final act feels repetitive, a chore to get through but worth it. And the gore? Unexpected but fun! Not on Terrifier level but for something marketed crazily, that sits in the main stream, it’s pretty intense stuff.

The Woman in the Yard has a wonderful short film concept. Expand that into a feature film and you’ve got a crawling, creepy flick with no sharpness or any true fright. What Jaume Collet-Serra presents takes far too long to develop and falls flat when it’s fully revealed by the end. Every actor puts their best foot forward and works with thin material which was commendable but can’t save the film.

Candy is a difficult film for many reasons. It starts off in the deep end, leaving little room to expand but somehow pulls it off. The characters are nothing new but are given life by two incredible performances larger than the movie by Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish. And it does a good job at showing the fear, anger, and anxiety that builds over time as an addict but it’s not anything we haven’t seen before. All that said, there is a quiet poetic pacing and build that does help elevate Candy a notch above mediocrity. I will say the final scene truly leaves you with a devastating loss yet peacefulness.

I mean, what can I even say at this point that hasn’t been said? Christopher Nolan has the ability to draw out the highest potential in every single member of the cast. Ledger is transformative, he gave one of the very best performances we’ve witnessed on screen. Michael Caine is a guiding light and magical. Bale compliments the unhinged attitude of Ledger’s Joker to the highest degree and Eckhart’s shift in character post-Rachel is incredible. But on top of the performances, the film itself is at times comical, always explosive, and consistently moving. So much so that at times The Dark Knight feels like it’s moving at 2x speed, moving at a speed that does keep you attached to the screen for the entire 2.5 hours. Every conversation, every scene, every cut is important but it also leaves little room to fully digest what’s happening. I’m still begging Nolan to have his actors speak above a whisper, though.
