Bill Skarsgård is transformative. Transcendent. Lily Rose Depp is incredible, Hoult is continuing his run of success, Willem Dafoe is having a belligerent good time, but Skargård is gonzo. Theres nobody committing harder to characters than him. As is my issue with most Eggers’ movies, I struggled to understand most of the dialogue but frankly this movie is easier to understand than the likes of The Witch so I’ll give it that. The look is incredible, as with all Eggers’…

Astounding visual effects. Remarkable cinematography. A breathtaking, haunting score. Thrilling action. Incredible sound design. Strong performances. A gripping and sometimes confusing story, Dune Part Two has it all and it’s all thanks to the brilliant vision of Denis Villeneuve. The ability to take an expansive story such as Dune and make it so enjoyable that for 166 minutes you can’t take your eyes off the screen is wondrous. Fewer people walked out to use the restroom than any movie I’ve…

John Carpenter Ranked

A few things you can count on when watching John Carpenter films are the score absolutely ripping, the effects being fun, and a ton of tongue in cheek humor. Vampires is full of those things, but it’s also stuffed with unlikable characters that had me rooting for the villain, an ugly “made for tv” look, and bad campiness.

Wow. Kind of kicking myself in the ass for not seeing this in theaters. I have never been a fan of espionage movies or stories of any kind, but the trailer did Black Bag a disservice. Steven Soderbergh’s film is totally different than it was presented, it’s a 90 minute (excluding credits), taut, steamy, whodunnit combined with aspects of an espionage thriller. The confrontational tension created by Soderbergh here is the kind that some directors strive to hit but cannot even achieve in 2+ hours. Obviously having Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett do the heavy lifting is a deadly, almost unfair, combination, they’re electric.

Nonnas is a wonderful reminder that movies can just be sweet, kind, and healing. Nothing incredibly interesting is happening, but that’s life. A group of individuals come together to make the ultimate goal work, nothing wrong with that. Stephen Chboksy creates an atmosphere that feels like a warm hug. The cast is strong, and Vince Vaughn and Linda Cardellini can do no wrong in book.

Thunderbolts* rocks. Plain and simple. There are obvious hiccups where Marvel’s formula or preferences peek through but overall there’s something of a unique idea here from Jake Schreier. Unlike other Marvel films, Thunderbolts* is trying to say something. Now, it’s not handled with the most nuanced of touches or resolved perfectly but it’s something fresh, new, and haunting. Marvel clearly left their comfort zone and allowed more darkness and fun into the mix. There are of…
