A little bit of dead ringers, a little bit of Sisters, a lot of Sato craziness including eyeball licking. You can't see that and not think, "Dude! Somebody's gonna get pink eye that way!" Ugh. Ewww. WTF?!? Okay, I get the idea of the duality, the isolation of the individual, the eye as the way the isolated individual sees the outside world almost in a Georges Bataille-like homage...but...pink eye.

Dem Horrorfan wird hier nichts Neues oder Innovatives vorgesetzt, aber als solider Slasher geht BRUTE 1976 vollkommen klar.

Street kids turning tricks. Mike has narcolepsy. He was abandoned by his mom and longs to have a relationship with her. His friend Scott comes from a rich family and he's only on the street out of rebellion. Mike is in love with Scott, but Scott likes women. As soon as Scott gets his inheritance, he turns his back on Mike and all the other hustlers. Mike continues in the lifestyle despite having narcoleptic attacks that leave him ed out randomly.
This is pretty sad and depressing.
Was Doris Wishman secretly a Marxist? Her films often remind me of Godard, and this is no exception. As with Godard, A TASTE OF FLESH practically rubs its artificiality in your face. The dialogue is awkwardly dubbed, and the camera is a bit bored with what it's supposed to be filming. Also as with Godard, particularly post-1967 JLG, ATOF seems designed to alienate you and make you feel bad for enjoying it.
It's been a few years since I've watched Death Sentence and I have always really enjoyed this one. However, watching it now with a deeper understanding of film and Wan's influences - I have a much deeper appreciation for this film. The way that Wan moves the camera and sets up shots here is almost invasive and rivals the type of shots I would imagine are heavily used in snuff films. An appropriate first entry for pride month and my first time watching this one. Predictably trashy and full of queerness, but I had a slightly hard time keeping up with it sometimes. Still a great piece of trash cinema, but so far I’ve preferred some of Waters’ other work.
