Dublin Film Festival film #6

I mean this is basically Little Miss Sunshine with more existentialism, of course I loved it

I love the idea of a group of very well-drawn characters in an incredibly ambiguous situation. It's never revealed where the family is going or why, and there's some pretty heavy implication that something otherworldly is going on, but every character is just so strong and so easy to love that the film's deep reservoir of vagueness almost becomes…

Nitram

Justin Kurzel moves away from the heavily stylised action of Macbeth and True History of the Kelly Gang and back to the grotty, suburban true crime of Snowtown. Great performances by Caleb Landry Jones and especially Judy Davis give reason enough for Nitram to exist.

★★★★ Rewatched by Ross

Dublin Film Festival film #5

Would've liked a little more on the aftermath of the central tragedy but that feels like a nitpick when Nitram delivers such a direct and distressing take on how unresolved issues balloon into shocking, devastating violence. Cleverly avoids the sensationalism that a lesser take on this story would've gone for, and Caleb Landry Jones delivers one of the best performances of the year so far. Deeply uncomfortable and massively affecting, it's another strong psychological character study from Justin Kurzel

One of the grossest films I've ever seen but man I loved it. Simon Rex brings to life one of the slimiest characters cinema has ever seen. Mikey Saber deserves prison or at the very least to be thrown into a black hole. He's completely and utterly revolting.... but my god is he hypnotic to watch. Every shitty decision he makes, made me want to throw my drink at the screen. I've never wanted to see…

Dublin Film Festival film #4

I ire how raw this is, and it's hard not be taken aback when the real people it's based on come onscreen but something about Hive just left me slightly cold. Its take on grief and irreplaceable loss is poignant, but the film's 84 minutes are unevenly paced and visually uninteresting. The story is powerful but the delivery is a touch too straightforward for it to really reach its full potential. Still, the incredible central performance from Yllka Gashi makes it worth seeking out. A mixed bag, but it has enough going for it to give it a soft recommend

We went to watch a selection of shorts and this is by far the one that I connected with the most. It felt way more honest than Belfast, which handles heavy topics like a soap opera. Ruthless deals with masculinity in a way that all movies should, let everyone be themselves without making a big deal out of it. With wooden legs and a band named T-Rex, this short was always going to work for me.
