“We are House Atreides. There is no call we do not answer. There is no faith that we betray.”

Listen, when Dune was released, I liked it, but I felt like an outsider for not thinking it was “phenomenal.” Upon rewatching, in preparation for the sequel, I will it it’s better than I but still far from the “masterpiece” many talked about upon initial release. It’s so painfully incomplete that it’s hard to judge on its own. My favorite…

“One of the things I love most about this life is that there’s no final goodbye.”

An absolutely shattering meditation on life. A reminder that living is an act of sheer will — as is keeping the memories of those we’ve lost and love alive. Nomadland made my eyes bulge and my heart swell too many times to count. Chloé Zhao made a beautiful, beautiful masterpiece. It’s tender, warm, and by far the most compelling affirmation that life, for all its messiness, is worth living.

“And nothing could ever be broken that we can’t fix together.”

I’m two years late, but I’m happy to report that I fell in love with Encanto – its vibrant animation, world and characters, music, and, more importantly, its message. It charmingly explores the concept of family, imbuing it with much of the liveliness of Latin culture. I saw much of my family in these characters and, for once, saw myself in an animated Disney film. (Tangentally related, Pixar’s Elio

“We’re not unreachable.”

The Power of the Dog seems intent on distracting us from its purpose, cleverly weaving storylines that point toward alternate endings and possibilities. At its core, something I’ve only been able to discern in retrospect, it’s a provocative story about a mother and son stuck in a cycle of survival and preservation — one launched by the death of an unnamed man, her husband and his father.

The Power of the Dog is Campion at her most…

A tale of a not-so-subtle Robin who believes he’s as slick as mice. Robin Robin is wholesome and perfect content for the holidays.

I demand Gillian Anderson voice every animated characters from now on.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is one of the better movies I’ve seen in my life.

It’s a profoundly beautiful story, helmed by an impressively funny and emotional script. The camera work is gentle and invites you to linger in Marcel’s world. Even though Marcel’s a shell, you feel what he feels, you understand what he’s going through.

Our world’s so big, it’s easy to feel small — it’s about finding the people who make us feel important, who make us feel loved, and who remind us why life’s worth living for.

At risk of oversharing on Letterboxd, this miniseries meant a lot to me for many reasons. For starters, though I was a bit older than Maddy when my mom was going through something similar, I’m the child of an eventual single mother who had to escape abuse for the sake of the safety of herself and her children, and while some of my youngest and saddest memories have faded as the years go by, the feelings haven’t.

Dopesick is one of the most emotionally devastating series I’ve seen in quite some time. Occasionally, its reach is greater than its grasp, and it’s not free of heavy-handed dialogue entirely, but it’s full of undeniably riveting righteous fury, and the ensemble is exceptionally cast, with each actor earning your engagement in spite of the slight structural stumbles here or there. Michael Keaton is going to deservedly win that Emmy, but Kaitlyn Dever is just as astounding, again asserting herself…
