Watching this on the second go-around, wow! I don’t know Hu it didn’t resonate with me as much the first time but second time, holy cow. So good. I love the complex story and message. I can’t wait to watch it again and unpack it more.

(7.5/10) The director of Mary and Max’s new film is, once again, a stop-motion clay animation that continues to explore loneliness and mental health, with many genuinely moving moments. It’s especially powerful in its depiction of trauma avoidance, hoarding, and emotional isolation. However, compared to the director’s previous film—which took a more understated, less theatrical approach—I find this one’s numerous plot conflicts and its overly “Hollywood” ending actually diminish the universality of the issues it seeks to examine. 05/21/2025 @Cinematheque
