“Oh, Shrek, don’t worry. Things just seem bad because it’s dark and rainy and Fiona’s father hired a sleazy hitman to whack you.”

A truly iconic piece of cinema, I’ve quoted “ the club, we’ve got jackets” at least once a week for 21 years straight. I know everyone loves Godfather Part II, The Dark Knight, and Empire Strikes Back, but Shrek 2 is so clearly the best sequel of all-time

I think I’ve reached a point where The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian has supplanted its predecessor as my favorite of the series. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe certainly feels more magical and works well as an introduction to this world, but the sequel takes things in a darker and more complex direction that I really like. Free from the burden of having to introduce the audience and the characters to this world, it’s able to hit the…

I guess there's just not an extraordinary amount of new things to say about Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson's 2001 adaptation of Shrek, the film that put DreamWorks Animation on the map, the same way Toy Story did with Pixar. This is a meta comedy that completely changed how to approach fantasy/fairytale tropes, and probably inspired a lot of modern day meta works (including animation), with its razor sharp jokes, not all of which land perfectly, but most do hit.…

The general consensus seems to be that this is better than it's predecessor, though going off the ratings on here it's not a massive divide, but I think I prefer the first Shrek. I'm not even entirely sure why because Shrek 2 is still a fun film and the narrative has a bit more to it. There's some great laughs and the message is strong. But maybe I have a bit less nostalgia for this or I'm just too tired currently.

Regardless, it's still a lot of fun.

Less heartfelt message, but stunningly greater visuals, and sharply funnier. Easily, one of the best animated sequels ever made!!

"Shrek 2" might lose the touching message and clever comedy script as the first film had, but it still manages to keep the ride to be genuinely joyful and unstoppably funny like its predecessor. It's still clever on parodying other fairy tale adaptation, except this time is more on pop cult films in Hollywood and that even makes all jokes visually…

A charmingly subversive fairy tale masterpiece!!

The animation might look dated in a few shots, and the fast pace might switch the mood too early in some key moments. But the script is so clever at creating parodies towards all classic fairy tale adaptations. Not to mention the great soundtrack that makes many hilarious scenes surprisingly cool and charmingly unforgettable. The fast pace also leaves the whole film with no boredom and fills it with a fully dark-comedy fun ride.…

I this playing like the greatest movie ever made. I got it on DVD for Christmas and three generations laughed along with it. It was imperical. It had cracked the code. And now...it's fine.

The animation has aged horrendously, a lot of the characters and environments look stocky and ill fitting. The humour now often feels very childish and glib. The vocal performances a tad lazy.

But it still has charm, some great jokes and you can't deny this…
