I'm not sure what this list is but here it is anyway. I wanted to highlight "finding-peace-of-mind in the afterlife" type of films. Characters coming to with the fact that they are dead. Then peaceful turned into tranquil and the next thing I know I had a bunch of films with nightmarish hell scenarios. They are often also tranquil, in a way... I don't typically make a distinction between dreams and nightmares, so that seems fitting.

So this list is more for the titles towards the top. Includes metaphorical deaths, death- & resurrection-like scenarios, and death dreams.

Horror thrives in disharmony. An unusual surface hiding a deeply familiar core. The odd that feels all-too real. Like an unknown ingredient that colors the entire piece in a different light, adding mystique and intrigue. The familiar becomes fresh again. Horror cinema becomes palpable again.

Disharmonious rhythms and awkward moments of filmmaking. Makes you wonder: "Did I just see what I thought I saw?" You're on alert. You feel uneasy. This is not what you are used to seeing when gawking at a film while munching away on your Cheetos or twiddling your thumbs or taping your heel or whatever else your physical major dysfunction is. You entered new cinematic territory. It seems anything could happen next.

Genres and categories fall to the wayside, become meaningless. Does the film have a peculiar style or do those people just not know what they are doing? Are they not in control? The choices that are made are impossible to comprehend. Is there anything in control? What could be that weird? Can life really go this out of whack?

It's a world built on thin ice. Surreal-adjacent. Unnerving, less for what happens, than for how we see it happen. The perspective from which we see events. It's askew. It's awkward. Right in our faces. Yet brutally unknowable.

This is something of a companion list to my annual Anti-Canon list (a Top 300 of little seen personal favorites; available HERE, from which I excluded experimental films this year just so that they, and especially a high number of shorts, wouldn't drown out a lot of the EZ art gems.

But it also stands perfectly well on its own, it's relatively purely experimental, so no avant-garde (which ruined my original plan to call it PdA's Avant-Canon), so no Cocteau or Matthew Barney, and no "Marienbad", "Eraserhead" or even "Seashell and the Clergyman" *teary eye* and so on.

I was on the fence about including documentaries in a lot of cases, and essay type of films in particular, which constitute a decent portion of my favorites. I split them between the two lists but I guess the bigger part ended up on here as they tend to be very freewheeling even if in of creative technique they aren't really that out there. I was aiming for a Top 300 to mirror the Anti-Canon list, but tough luck, it ended up a Top 500 which was difficult enough. As an aside, a good thing that came out of it was that it made me add a bunch of titles to letterboxd that weren't listed yet, which I'm normally too lazy for. There is no overlap in titles between the two lists (if everything went well).

Dreams That Eyes Can See

These are the films that best evoke dreams for me in one way or another. Dreams as I experience them, and the way they feel to me personally. “Dream-like” is a term that I tend to avoid using without any context, I find it too interchangeably used with “atmospheric”, and atmospheric is great, but this is about a particular type of atmosphere. The uncanny, for example, often is something that does the trick for me, or when events in the film could just as well be seen as manifestations of a character's unconscious.

"Surreal" is another word that I tend to avoid in this context, I associate it too much with symbolism, a work that tries hard to make you derive some metaphorical meaning from it, which often takes away from creating a state of dreaming. Maybe in retrospect you can read a dream in of symbols, but I’m not interested in this here, I rather want the actual experience of dreaming replicated as vividly as possible.

Also worth mentioning are the (generally metaphysical) concepts that at least in my mind have some overlay with dreaming, so the films here that you may find have no apparent connection to dreams likely relate to one or some of the following things: Subconscious, collective unconscious, death (or rather the afterlife/netherworld), trance, altered states, stream of consciousness.

Largely eschewing all representational photographed imagery flicker film rather is characterized by its strobe light that often comes in rhythmic fashion and can create an illusion of shapes and images on screen or have a hypnotic effect.

Eligible films:
The boundaries are blurry but the majority of the film should be concerned with flashing images that last for perhaps a few frames or with pulsating images that are liable to create some sort of optical illusion or have a hallucinatory effect. Includes analog and digital works although film and senior works have something of an edge.

The order of the list is more or less determined by the purity of the films, beginning with the most basic and structuralist ones that only work with light and dark frames to films using more intricate or open-ended concepts and more complex patterns and images. The latter films also tend to diverge farthest from the original concept of the flicker film but they do, I think...I hope, maintain something of the original spirit. They may also be equals if not even superior in of either their structuralist interests or their visceral effect on the viewer, or ideally they have something to offer on both levels.

Anything that didn't qualify as "purely" experimental remained on the 300-titles-restricted Anti-Canon list which I came to term the "narrative cinema" segment, "narrative" arguably being a rather loose term here when it comes to some of these films.

You may notice that the two lists are a bit different from each other, with the letterboxd list including some films that aren't in IMDb's database at this time and vice versa.
