"When you've lived through war you can never be free of it"

Another Day of Life is a blend of animation, documentary and filmed footage based on the book Jeszcze dzień życia, an autobiographical of 3 months during the Angolan Civil War originally titled by the Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuściński.

It's interesting to watch a film based on a historical event I know nothing about. We get to see only a small snapshot of this time; a brief part in the conflict in Angola from 1975 to 1976 even though the Angolan civil war officially lasted until 2002. Just as small as it's chosen moment is it's chosen viewpoint, this isn't strange considering it's source material but it did feel somehow unfinished because of it.

The style of animation is simple and effective and the transitions from animation to documentary feel natural. I wasn't really sure if I would like the combination but it is very well executed. The more abstract parts of the animation were beautiful with gorgeous use of the soundtrack that really made a lasting impression on me. I particular liked the use of source photos blended into the animation and the ending was very moving.

Mavka is an animation based on a creature from Ukrainian folklore and mythology. The Mavka is a female spirit who embodies the forest and in this particular story protects the forest and falls in love with a human man, nearly sacrificing everything that she is in the process.

The original subject matter of the folktale seems a lot more interesting, however as the Mavka is usually portrayed as a female spirit who lures unsuspecting men to their deaths it is ittedly less child friendly. Not to say that the idea of losing your completely for a man is child friendly, as it obviously isn't and has become a very uninspired trope in childrens animation that deserves to die.

That being said Mavka: The Forest Song has some things going for it as a childs film. The animation is bright and colourful and the side characters are likable, the story is fine for what it is and although I found the humour lacking it's appropriate for children. It's not without its shortcomings though as the animation is far from perfect and the musical parts feel sudden and illfitting. All in all in spite of a total lack of originality it's just fine.

A soviet cosmonaut returns from a mission with a dead fellow astronaut and a parasitic alien inside of him. The space agency locks him up to study and attempt to separate them. Horror ensues.

Warning: Some spoilers ahead

Sputnik is a nicely done horror sci-fi drama all wrapped up in a 1970s era Soviet Russian bow. It is chock-full of body horror based solely on the idea of an alien climbing out of your throat, slithering around and then climbing back in (vomit). Aside from that the creature design is wonderfully creepy and looks great, the story is decent even though it sometimes calls for slight suspension of belief and the deaths are pretty gruesome. The ending felt a bit out of left field and I might have appreciated a bit more horror but definitely an enjoyable monster film with a twist.

Hero is based on the legend of the first Chinese emperor of the Qin, who in 221 BC has conquered all warring states and unified China. We follow Jet Li, an nameless assassin who approaches the emporer to share stories of his triumphs against the most talented fights in the land. The audience is shown these in grand and dramatic flashbacks perfectly choreographed in to a dance of swords and fabric. However the story told is not neccesarily the truth; throughout the film Nameless and the Emperor twist the of the assassins to suit their perspective and line up with a different chain of events.

This is no doubt a very beautiful and highly stylised film that is a feast for the eyes. The fight scenes are epic and impressive if seen only as art and not action. As someone not really into action I don't feel I was missing anything particularly but can imagine how one who was expecting it might be disappointed. I would say it has more in common with modern dance than stage combat. The cinematography is gorgeous and the score really sets the stage from the beginning.

The only other aspect that needs to be discussed is the message. Hero explicitly promotes the idea of a united China, ruled by a central, Imperial, Chinese authority. Despite the historical accuracy and consistency with Chinese philosophy it does come across as expansionist propaganda and it is not subtle at all. However considering the political climate in China in 2002 and the likelihood of government censor for the arts that really isn't surprising and honestly didn't unduly affect my enjoyment. The same could be said about war films from around the world since film began.

The Waiter is an aptly titled film, as the viewer spends the majority of the runtime waiting for something to happen and once it does waiting to find out if it's real. The plot follows Renos, a peculiar man who works as a waiter and seemingly had a boring life until he meets his neighbour and things change drastically.

Aris Servetalis who plays the titled role does a wonderful job portraying the man of few words and strange interactions. For some reason from the beginning my brain logged a resemblance to British actor Rupert Everett and I found it mildly distracting for reasons I cannot really explain. The womans character seemed very one dimensional although I suppose this probably isn't a failing but an artistic choice, albeit one I didn't appreciate. All in all a strange but captivating film with unique creative choices and beautiful cinematography, if you give it a chance and wait for the story to grow.

Se Min Kjole is the story of four young women who flee from rehab and the resulting road trip which consists of poorly made choices stacked on top of more poorly made choices leading to mostly disastrous consequences. Although the characters themselves are not particularly likable and their actions should seemingly only amplify this, when taking their circumstances and the gradual uncovering of their histories into you can't help but warm to them or at the very least begin to understand.

Films like this often teeter on the edge of becoming too depressing where the viewer starts to feel not like a neutral watcher but like an active participant "enjoying" peoples suffering as art. That felt true in this case to me as the characters become more and more tormented by their own actions and their circumstances. This is a bleak film which no doubt reflects real stories which do exist, but considering that this one isn't real I would have preferred to see some development which gave even the slightest of hope rather than be left so hopeless and empty.

Animal Kingdom is a bleak bleak film centred around a teenage boy whose depressing circumstances leave him staying with his criminal family who are currently at war with the police.

Both Jacki Weaver and Ben Mendelsohn absolutely steal their scenes in this one and do a spectacular job of making you absolutely hate them. Also James Frecheville does a particularly impessive job considering it was his first role and he has no facial expression for 90% of the film. This is top notch crime thriller which proves that there is no need for all out action scenes to keep you feeling tense throughout.

The Missing is a film about a young man finding his voice again after processing some deep life changing trauma. This is hidden under a story about alien abduction and being pursued by invisible entities which is extremely fitting and really works, even though it sometimes bordered on unserious which felt problematic given the subject matter.

The rotoscope animation is not really my cup of tea but I really liked the combination of this technique paired with the almost Charlie Brown style drawings which come via Erics inner child and he processes what happened to him in his early life.

In the country he will live in an old family home with his pregnant stepmother who also happens to be his aunt. Near the house is a tower which is blocked up and off limits. He follows a grey heron which starts talking to him and goes into the tower into a magical world and a lot of really crazy shit happens some of which is very confusing but all is bonkers and fantastical but really, what the hell did you expect?

So what else can be said? The animation is breaktakingly beautiful and the score is a wonderful partner to it. I'm sure it would pay to do a rewatching to pick up on all the details missed in moments of confusion. There are moments that are so gorgeous they feel like they will be unforgettable. Big Bad Wolves is a crime thriller about a policeman, a distraught father and a (maybe) paedophile murderer who end up in a room together after a little girl is found molested and beheaded in the woods.

Going from the above description, you probably wouldn't think it would be a comedy and if so you'd be proven wrong. That is not to say it works or is really funny, although it did get a few uncomfortable laughs out of me. Given how strange the tone is it's quite impressive that although while watching it I felt unsure; on the whole I appreciated the film. The acting from all three main characters was really impressive and it certainly kept me on the edge of my seat when I wasn't squirming.

The Extraordinary Tale of the Times Table is a hard film to describe. On its face it's a boy meets girl story and that's how it's described in it's own blurb, however it's not really about that at all. I would interpret it as a story about the crushing weight of adult responsibilities in the face of mental illness. I wouldn't at all have been surprised to find out it was made during COVID considering the themes of anxiety and enclosure, although in reality it is much older and unrelated.

It often feels quirky for quirkys sake, and not always the better for it aside from the delightful set design, styling and interesting shots. It lends some vibes from Wes Anderson films but although it definitely has potential falls short and seems to try too hard in places.

Country:

In the world of Paradise you can get rejuvenating treatment to become younger for exorbitant amounts of money by means of a medical procedure developed by AEON, a German company which has a monopoly on the procedure. The downside (along with the price tag of course) is that you have to buy those years from someone else, who is willing te lose them and has a DNA match. We follow a couple who due to predatory business practices lose their house and the wife is forced to "donate" 40 years of her life.

Paradise is a decent if somewhat lacking Sci-Fi film for which I don't really understand why the ratings are so low. It looks pretty good, and although the story is at times far fetched it is well acted. The premise is interesting and spawned a somewhat fraught conversation about surrogacy, prostitution and organ donation between my husband and I. Unfortunately somewhere half way through it does go down hill and at some point towards the end continues at a quite steep incline. Nevertheless it was enjoyable if not particularly original.

And Breathe Normally follows the lives of two women; one a struggling Icelandic single mum, the other a Guinean asylum-seeker arrested by customs for a counterfeit port. These stories intertwine giving the viewer a deeper understanding of the kind of lives that often go unnoticed in rich and privileged countries like Iceland.

The story itself is compelling, however to keep it moving forward coincidences are needed that seem contrived and move to cheapen it's meaningful message. Luckily the film is elevated by incredible acting by both Kristín Þóra Haraldsdóttir and Babetida Sadjo and even a very understated and realistic portrayal by Patrik Nökkvi Pétursson which is doubly impressive for a child actor. The ending is a perfect full stop which feels very satisfying.

I can probably count the films I've seen in Welsh on one hand, although I did used to watch some Welsh cartoons as a child. The fact that I need to tag this as United Kingdom for this challenge makes it seem almost alien, considering I also hail from there and recognise only one in every thirty words and that only because they seemed to be borrowed from English.

This perfectly sets the weird and uncomfortable scene that takes us through Gwleđđ. The events of a dinner party and a Welsh folktale become bloodsoaked and entangled all encircling a hired waitress named Cadi who has been employed to help with a fancy night painstakingly planned out by the lady of the house.

Our folktale unfolds and it gets under your skin and down your throat and bursts back out again as the film comes to a vivid and frantic ending. Excellently acted, certainly by our almost mute main character but kudos go to everyone pictured as they all inhabit their characters well. Thouroughly engaging and magical and disgusting. Lovely.

I was absolutely intrigued by the description of Grand Tour and very much looking forward to seeing it in the cinema. Unfortunately I was incredibly disappointed. I honestly felt it was a too-long, jumbled mess which also has the balls to be completely self indulgent and high brow without having earned it at all.

Even though I can enjoy a good experimental film and have done my fair share of recommendations for "pretentious" black and white films where nothing happens; this just isn't it for me. The main issues were as follows; I found the music ill fitted and distracting. I found the main character utterly unlikable, and the stories told the wrong way around. I found the documentary footage to be like castoffs from the cutting floor of the type of Welcome to Asia advert that you see at large airports.

That being said, there were things I liked and one of them is to my surprise the many languaged voice overs given that I hate voice overs generally although I missed the one in Tagalog which was a strange choice. The Philipines in general seemed glossed over except for the somewhat iconic scene of a heart felt rendition of Frank Sinatra in a café and some other scenes that reminded me why I love to travel to Asia but which truly added nothing to the film.

Of Good Report is a story of highly disturbing longing and some form of sick and twisted love with obvious influence from Lolita. We follow a teacher with an obsession with a student named Nolitha (kind of cementing my previous point) and a journey into depravity in black and white with a largely silent lead.

Breathtaking both in how disturbing it is and how impressive and beautiful it can be, with either amplifying the other. Some interesting choices which I did not always understand or get behind, but definitely clearly chosen cinematography, music, script and acting style which absolutely makes a statement.

Mirage follows Marco, a small boy living in North Macedonia in hard times who faces abuse from all sides. Being bullied harshly(and worse) both at school and home he finds solitude and an escape in a newly discovered love of writing.

I had trouble finishing this film, as even though on it's face it seems like the film that gives the character so much misfortune just to teach him how to find hope for Marco there is no hope. It was a struggle for me because there wasn't anything really here to make it instructive or enjoyable enough to watch a little boy suffer for 106 minutes however the ending and some of the included imagery made it worth watching it in the end which came as a great surprise to me.

Out of the Blue has an absolutely masterful use of sound and in particular silence to draw you in and keep you on the edge of your seat. Even more so as it is based on true events and seems to have held very true to witness statements up until the end with a scene added with artistic license which seems to deviate quite extremely from the truth and as I understand caused some issues at the time. Thanks to both of these things it feels so very real to nearly be a documentary at times, and I found myself holding my breath and jumping at noises as if I too was hiding from a roaming gunman right on my couch in the livingroom.

Although it is a dramatised version of a very real and very shocking mass shooting, the film avoids making any sort of statement and I think that is one of the most positive aspects. There are no over the top special effects, no dramatic one liners or heroic feats of daring created to add effect. We are watching people in a really horrible situation doing what people do and thankfully there is very little attention paid to the gunman himself, and all the focus on the victims and survivors. All of whom were heroic enough without any extra Hollywood style added.

Kugluktuk is a small Inuit community found north of the Arctic Circle in the massive Nunavut, Canada. It is no secret that there are high suicide rates amongst indigenous peoples, and neither is it surprising to hear that these numbers shoot up in remote areas. In Kugluktuk about 20 years ago this was proven to be true as the town held one of the highest teen suicide rates in North America. The Grizzlies shows us the story (or atleast the beginning of it) of how this started to change.

Based on a true story about a teacher starting a lacrosse team with a bunch of kids who have very little positive going on in their lives; The Grizzlies follows a known formula which is predictable and reliable. That being said, it has enough going for it to not turn out stale. The stories we follow are bleak, it's easy to root for these kids. There is some stellar acting in particular from Paul Nutarariaq and Tantoo Cardinal. There are some beautiful shots, really highlighting a gorgeous landscape and a few good laughs to round it out. All in all a perfect sunday afternoon film.

Lee Ja-sung lives a double life. His job is as a policeman, but his real day to day is spent as a gangster in the Goldmoon crime syndicate. When the boss of the syndicate dies in a car accident, things are set in motion that will change the way Lee Ja-sung must do his job. He struggles to reconcile his tasks as an undercover policeman with the decisions he must make as a gangster.

With a runtime of 134 mins New World is impressive in its pace. It does not suffer from being too long or too slow to get going but keeps a steady rhythm, holding the attention of it's viewer throughout it's many twists and turns. The lead cast all offer brilliant performances that elevate a script which is already stellar. There is a perfect buildup throughout the film which culminates in a very satisfying ending. Definitely one to recommend.

My list for the March Around the World 2020 Challenge
One of the things I really like to focus on during this challenge is films created by indigenous peoples. Watching foreign films already expands the mind, but I love immersing myself in other cultures and I also find ing marginalised peoples and giving them a voice very important. So I chose a few documentaries and some indigenous feature films and hope to be able learn from them.
If there is anyone who has any suggestions for me I would love to hear them!
