Let It Be

It goes without saying that the rooftop concert footage is remarkable; thank goodness they had enough cameras to capture the steady accumulation of incredulous bystanders. The rehearsal sequences, on the other hand, can get a little frustrating. Not only are there no interviews with the Beatles, there’s absolutely no context for the material at all. You have to already know what the Beatles initially planned to do at Twickenham Film Studios, and why a few scenes later they’re all walking into Apple’s offices and rehearsing in a totally different space. In reality, George Harrison had quit the band and only agreed to return if they moved to Apple, something the film does not address. If Peter Jackson’s documentary series will present a more complete portrait of what was going on in the band at this time, I’m all for it.
