Action Point

2018

★★

-I like Knoxville’s post-Jackass aesthetic of blending real stunts with fiction stories, but his acting here is so forced, with a thick, affected accent. You always know when he’s doing his own stunts because suddenly he sounds like Johnny Knoxville again, cackling and yelping like a loon sans accent. Bad Grandpa was a better character for him, with a story that made better use of his physical gifts.

-Speaking of Jackass, the best performance in the film is Chris Pontius, whose sweetly vulgar Party Boy persona translates very nicely to this setting. I hope he acts more.

-Action Point is loosely based on a real-life theme park called Action Park in Northern New Jersey. That place, dubbed “Traction Park,” was legitimately dangerous — and it had a pretty interesting history. This dumbed-down treatment bears little resemblance to the real place once Knoxville and his cronies start adding unlicensed petting zoos and unsupervised children’s play areas. Action Park deserved better (or maybe worse).
