Dune: Part Two

Man, oh man, do I love movies. Hell, I am in love with cinema, and I'm in love with art itself. The fact that we have a movie of this magnitude in scope and scale is a miracle. Denis Villeneuve simply conquered the universe by bringing what he loved to the big screen in a beautiful way. I'm sure many have said when they saw the early screenings, see this on the biggest screen possible. It had been months since I was upset that Part Two got delayed because these stupid Hollywood CEOs wouldn't pay their actors and I waited for nearly 3 years since Part One and I've read the first book since then. Was there any doubt that we wouldn't be disappointed? Absolutely not.

I'm trying to write a review but I just can't stop thinking about what I've witnessed tonight, this might be the best movie ever made, which goes to show that Denis got up to the peak of his powers since Blade Runner: 2049. No other director besides Sam Raimi have made two incredible sequel movies.

Part One was simply an appetizer into Frank Herbert's world while Part Two is the main course meal. If you didn't like Part One nor did you want more, Part Two gives you that exactly, and that's MORE. It perfectly expands on the ideal world that Frank Herbert created like Giedi Prime, the planet of House Harkonnen, the Bene Ghesserit, the Emperor and Princess Irulan and Shai Haluud(BIG WORM). It also shows how spice can exactly affect people and be used for imperial power.

I can give all the praise to the incredible and unbelievable direction and the stunning cinematography from my fav guy Greg Fraiser, but the ultimate standout to me is the entire cast. I think everyone fires on all cylinders, even the actors that are not the main players even do well. This is not a review where I praise Austin Butler as the scene stealing guy that he's been supposedly praised as, like comparing him to Heath Ledger's Joker, I honestly do not see that. Don't get me wrong, I loved Austin's portrayal of Feyd-Rautha, he's a terrifying force of nature with a stone-cold stare that'll make you run for your life, but in order for a role to be even compared to Joker, he's got to be an "agent of chaos" and has a desire to watch the world burn while toying with the protagonist. Feyd-Rautha doesn't at all taunt Paul Atreidis. Rebecca Ferguson was a stand-out to me in Part One but she's better in Part Two, I really love her descent into manipulation and cuntery reminding me a lot of Lady MacBeth. Javier Bardem gets more to do, he acts as both a comedic relief and a character brainwashed into a dangerous religion. Zendaya is a goddamn movie star, Chani is in consideration to be my favorite performance from her, "but Santi, what about Rue?" While I loved her in Euphoria, she was poorly written by a well-known creep in the industry. Chani is written with respect from a ionate filmmaker and backed up by compelling source material, that final shot of Chani will never leave my brain. You see Chani fight for her people while also defying a religion that she doesn't believe in because it's dangerous for the fremen and even the entire universe at some point. I think Josh Brolin is awesome in this, not much to be said other than I love seeing him killing bald genocidal freaks. Dave Bautista continues to prove that he's the best wrestler-turned-actor of all time, with the way he plays a man-child while also being a scary brute. I saved the best for last, Timothee Chalamet IS Paul "Maud'dib" Atreidis. You might think that him playing a lead in a big sci-fi movie could be distracting since that he is in fact "Timothee" but you have to understand that Denis hand-picked the actors to play these characters, Timothee included because he didn't want anyone else but him. I'm not the only one thinking this, this is Timothee's best performance of his career. He is at the peak of his acting power, he absolutely sells every moment of this movie. He was born to play a young Duke's son with promise slowly descend on a dark path, it's Shakespearean storytelling brought to the big screen. If that "Fear the moment" sequence doesn't get him an Oscar nom we have failed as a society, hell, we have failed as an existence to GOD. Even when Paul had the best intentions to take back Arrakis and become Duke, but he unfortunately carried a darkness and wanted more, in his eyes he wants to help the universe when really, he's about to cause nothing but harm and devastation, which makes Chani's and Paul's relationship very devastating.
Also, where the fuck is Thufir?

This is a movie that transcends art and cinema itself. It's a once-in-a-lifetime theater experience. If anything depressing and artsy blockbusters are really the stuff that people are into now and not quirky CGI'd capeshit.

Now, I can go to sleep knowing that I've seen a masterpiece tonight and I will continue to see it many times this month.
