Except for some camera angles and editing (and, in the last minute, some enormous breasts), this could have been directed by anyone. Meyer thought this attempt to try something different was a failure, but it's merely a better than average blaxploitation.

This film doesn't get talked about much in discussions of the director and now I see why: it just isn't very good. A lot of trademarks, good and bad, are present, but it feels like he was trying to figure out where to go with his films here.

Amazing that Andy Milligan made a good movie. I was going to rate this much higher, but there's a point where you can see he thought "need to wrap this up" and there's a bunch of implausible murders in a couple minutes about 15 minutes from the end. It helps that he had actors who could act for once.

Reminds me a lot of The Last Picture Show, if that were about hillbilly incest.

Cronenberg fans may appreciate this rather extreme horror that is both gory and weird. Some of it doesn't work for me, but the characters and the story idea are interesting.

By this time in the Guinea Pig series, there's more of a plot. There's an attempt to offend by a new means, rather than the standard dismemberment and mutilation. For the right audience, this would make a good second feature for Color Me Blood Red, both short gore films about crazed artists, but in this one he's not voluntarily killing but rather trying to save.

Not for the squeamish! The first Guinea Pig film is horrible, in that it looks real; by the 3rd, they've added comedy. This second one is just torture porn done a little better than usual, but completely unbelievable if you know enough anatomy. The one eye sequence is done really well and, like in the first film, looks realistic and is hard to watch.

Every Tinto Brass film I see, I think "this is the most Tinto Brass film." This one is definitely 1969, essentially a long music video with a woman deciding it's OK to explore her sexuality, with footage from Muybridge to Auschwitz and stills (one of Frank Zappa on a toilet surprised me) and Brass himself in a cameo as a gynecologist and painted naked people and a tribute to Richard Lester films at the end and... well, it's pretty unfocused, obviously.

Some bad acting but some amazing effects for the budget in this female vigilante flick.

Hard to believe Freleng was still directing these in his 70s, when everything else is changed from the cartoons of the 1930s.

Has some interesting ideas (I may have watched this before). There are moments when Jolene Blalock is the most beautiful woman ever, then a fraction of a second later... not.

It's tricky to make a film about someone unlikable; while you never really feel sorry for this woman who disfigured herself for attention, there's a lot of sly observations about online celebrity obsession.

Very mediocre clichéd lesbian love story.

Mixed bag anthology. The first bit is like an experimental film. The "caterpillar" sequence is (intentionally) revolting.

Seems to be all style and tropes, without plot or characters, as if a demo reel to show what they could do.

Forgot I watched this today; it's not memorable.

This manages to make all the things westerners usually dislike about Indian films fun. It's a good film, an important film, and an entertaining film; it's also problematic. It's propaganda and it has some pretty nasty stereotypes of the British as the villains; I can't give it a just because I happen to be on their side. Watch it anyway.

I'd seen some of the sequels, which were incomprehensible without knowing the series, so finally spent 10 hours watching the original series (and why is it on Letterboxd anyway?) which is hugely influential and has a rabid following. At first it's not easy to follow, but it pieces together even if you miss the early hints, then it goes off in weird directions of religion, philosophy, sociology, and especially psychology. The last two episodes are just a 14 year-old boy's justifying his continued existence to himself; if you're a 14 year-old boy, this whole series is aimed at you, including the sexualization of all the female characters and the belief that, even though you have no knowledge, skills, or experience, the entire world revolves around you.

I must have seen this as a kid, but am counting as a first time watch, since I don't it. Hammer did these minor low budget horrors so well!

Watched only by people trying to see all of Hitchcock's films. It's very dull. Since no one seems to define "skin game" in their review, it means a game fixed so you can't win.

Has one of the worst newspaper headlines I've seen on film. I've noticed that most of the inferior silent Hitchcock have a writing credit for him; the writing here is the weakness.

Hitchcock's last silent love triangle film is probably the best of them, but seems to today's audience to be contrived and having people do things that they wouldn't in real life... to which I mention my father found out at age 16 that his father's best friend was his biological father and that his last name wasn't what he thought, as the parents had married for propriety and quickly divorced. The setting on Manx makes the coincidence more likely, as it's a small community.

It's still not great, mind you.

I was all in for an hour, but this is at least an hour too long.

Tilda Swinton is, of course, terrific in this and she's the whole film; it actually screams "Oscar bait," but she wasn't nominated. Unfortunately, the story isn't great and it's long enough that you start to notice the acting and the problems. She chain smokes through the first 10 minutes, and then not again. She's a mess at the start and at the end looks clear-eyed, is making good (or at least difficult) decisions and it doesn't seem to be character development but poor continuity.

Whenever a list of best films is published, the complaints are of two types. The first is: too American, too male, not enough black and white or silent, no shorts, no non-narrative (documentary or experimental). The other is: it's always the same films; where's the stuff I like? This second, nebulous, gets referred to as "genre," but ends up being "horror," because the others are hard to define: cult, midnight, underground, just plain weird.
I took lists from 50 self-proclaimed experts on these (think guy who once worked in a video store and now has a podcast) and compiled them. These are the ones on the most lists, starting at 26 lists, ending at 9. Excluding ones likely on a 1000 Best list (there's Bergman films!), there's almost exactly a thousand. It's even more American and male and heavily 1970s and 80s.

Listed roughly in order, each film has its score in the description. I've seen all the films; some are favorites, some you couldn't pay me to see again, but I think the list is useful, especially for "turkeys" and "extreme" films.

I have a list of the films that scored 8 or 7; they are a more diverse group of over 800 titles, from A Trip to the Moon (1903) to Titane (2017), but still omit some expected titles ("Aliens" somehow only was on 5 lists).
