Margaret is an astounding piece of writing—messy, layered, and deeply human. It dives into the recesses of grief and trauma, but more hauntingly, it explores what happens when that trauma is weaponized by a performatively moral, deeply wounded narcissist. There might not be a better example of pre-code hollywood than this film. And because of that I find myself being nostalgic for the work that could have been made had the code never been put in place. Yes, there is subversion here, but there is also blatant eroticism.
