Dune: Part Two

As a huge fan of the book I suppose I should be outraged by some fairly major changes Villeneuve has brought here, but in truth I can see why he's done so, and for the most part I think they've proven to be improvements. A four year old child with the voice, maturity and reasoning of an adult is much easier to realise on paper than film

Dune 2 is fabulous, a bleak science fiction masterpiece, capturing the themes of the book and often even doubling down on them, inventing a split in the Fremen and a less compliant Chani. It looks and sounds absolutely incredible, and is best experienced in IMAX if possible. Despite a gentle pace it's consistently absorbing, with only a mis-cast Christopher Walker souring things a tad.

Some may go into this expecting a Star Wars/Lord of the Rings/Marvel style action blockbuster, with easily defined heroes and villains, and perhaps leave disappointed, I've read some criticism that people didn't know who to cheer, but this is science fiction which doesn't want you to have heroes, warns against Messiah figures (there's a clear nod to Life of Brian in one of the film's rare comedic moments!) and is all the more human for it. Bring on Part 3, which will surely see Villeneuve deviate from the books further, and I'll be interested to see where he goes with it.
