Plante is very smart to transpose these predominantly male issues to a female protagonist. By giving us lady sickos, the movie allows us the curiosity, empathy, and safety to follow these threads. A man obsessed with someone torturing and murdering teenagers? Jail, exploitative, disgusting. A woman who does the same? She’s so dark, mysterious, and probably broken. Incels are scary, femcels are sexy. Why did all of us sickos watch a movie we mostly knew was going to be about snuff films of teenage girls? What’s wrong with us? In the spirit of Michael Haneke’s Funny Games, Pascal Plante uses this movie against us, to get us to ask ourselves what draws us to this shit. Perhaps his greatest trick is never showing us any of the violence that we keep hearing about. It constantly nags at our attention, and we’re expecting to be rewarded for our sickly patience. The reward never comes; instead, a slap on the wrist. He wisely uses our own gender biases to get us to take a better look at ourselves. Why do we want to watch a girl on the internet do her makeup while merrily describing a brutal murder?

It’s so great to revisit this and see some sprinkles of things that pop up in future works, like the inner beauty pageant or even the way Eliot talks to students while they watch Beverly doing surgery: he presents it the same way Vaughan presents the James Dean car crash in Crash. Jeremy Irons is so fucking perfect in this. I’m only slightly horrified to report that I realized he looks like Harry Dean Stanton.

I love that Cronenberg understands how scary it is to have a male gynecologist, and how scary the violation of that line is. And how scary symbiosis is, and twins. I think the part where Beverly is all high and getting dressed for surgery while looking like some sort of Cardinal/king is pure kino. I was smiling from ear to ear seeing that. In that moment he’s god, you can see it and feel it.

Stupidly fun time

You can’t just make the Piano Teacher but woke!!

The premise is great but there’s something so sterile in its delivery. Maybe it’s the crisp digital photography, maybe it’s that the kink stuff isn’t that weird. I think the movie becomes entirely defanged when Samuel tells Romy’s husband “no actually that’s an outdated view of sexuality.” Sure, it’s Antonio Banderas, but I can’t believe this erotic film has me siding with the jilted husband.

Obsessed w the fact that Tom Cruise had his manhood so wrecked while shooting Eyes Wide Shut that it gave us This, the first entry into his life as a true psychopath. Paired w the John Woo doves and Enya-esque music, it’s certainly a time capsule and one that I’m all about. I love the fucked up bad mildly orientalist taste of the late 90s/early aughts. when people used to listen to Buddha Bar compilations on CD? Thats what this feels like.

Completely electric I can’t believe I waited almost 30 years to watch this! You have no idea how confused I was when I was trying to figure out how Martin Sheen still looked so young. Jacob tried to convince me I was wrong but turns out I was half right … Emilio Estevez….

What a movie. What a movie!

Damien is the star of the damn show. I see this and I think “bring back old school bullying!” The kids have gone soft. They’ll tell you you’re ugly on Tik Tok and then when you reply trying to joust back they chicken out and say “I didn’t mean it like that!” What happened to the days when someone would just tell you to kill yourself online?

After having just written about Lynch, I can’t help but see so much of his work in this. Prefiguring Lost Highway by 3 decades, a woman splinters herself in order to cope with who she is and what she’s done. She cannot reconcile her desires with her prescribed role (in society, on the stage, in a relationship), so she compartmentalizes herself in order to be more digestible (consumable). Once she’s completely disassembled herself, she pieces herself back together. Sane? Perfect? Ok? Who the fuck knows!

Power outage maybe the perfect thing to accompany this screening, as if we didn’t get enough fourth wall breaks and reminders that This Is A Film! Insane that nobody has come close to copying this successfully. Beautiful stuff.

It’s really funny to have watched Still Life and Unknown Pleasures today and to have immediately gone into this. Everything right now feels so crazy that it’s almost as if those were dreams and we crossed over into some weird parallel universe where a global pandemic happened and the world changed irrevocably and people were left incredibly lonely and we all lost sight of what’s really important.

Yet it still continues on w the themes of its predecessors, mainly that life happens to you and you kind of have no choice but to continue. When the river grows and raises its banks you’d better move your home to a higher place. 

Zhao Tao does so much without words here, and even more so with just her eyes. There’s a moment where she ties someone’s shoe and the entire world is contained in that moment…it broke me in two. An insane example of late style from a director who’s only in his 50s. I cannot wait to see what innovations his even later style brings.

Advance screening + Q&A with Jia Zhang-ke

Angry at the Americanization of the world, angry with the constantly moving goalposts of what it means to be able to survive.

Almost a folk horror in the way that it focuses on the ways in which rapid modernization clashes so much up against human interaction. Like sitting in water that slowly boils, you can’t quite process how weird the future actually is— who gives a fuck about UFOs? My husband hasn’t spoken to me in two years bc his job and his city have everything underwater

An ironically sprawling and massive work about a theme park that attempts to condense and shrink the entire world into one walking tour.

Genuinely surprised by this! I loooved the color grading on the dream sequences, the costumes, and all the nasty food stuff. A fairly cool subversion of the fairytale, I just wish it all coalesced into something coherent at the end. It has little ribbons of what points it’s trying to make, but they lay limp by the end, not entirely coming together to make a clear statement. A fun genre exercise w some great “pain is beauty” horror overall, but not much beneath the surface.

Really strong concept, really funny jokes, really wish I didn’t watch this in a room full of people who love Tim Robinson so much that they laugh when he doesn’t even do anything. 

Looking forward to catching this again with a more normal crowd.

Andrew DeYoung is really smart and interesting to listen to and he handled some bad questions and non-questions like a real pro.

On 35mm! A true testament to John Cssavetes’ acting that he could make me hate him here. Perhaps the most struck I’ve been by all the abuse thrown at Rosemary— it’s almost worse because she’s so childlike. Mia Farrow’s voice is so high, all her dialogue delivered with an almost innocent upseak, and each billowy A-line dress makes her look smaller and smaller, especially as the bump grows. This time around I loved the handheld shots and so much of the framing around doorways— both choices really add to the sense of paranoia brewing here.

It’s really so interesting the Polanski lived the life he did, and believed the things he did, and was still able to make this film. I genuinely believe all the feminism went over his head and that he saw himself as Rosemary here— when I think of it that way, I see so much more similarity with The Tenant. Perhaps the most damning evidence of the “death of the author;” despite all his past and future abuses toward women (both verbal and physical), he was still able to make a feminist horror masterpiece.

This is what going to the movies is all about! An action/horror with shades of Baz Luhrman maximalism? Absolutely.

I really hate the way that editing for big movies these days trends towards too many expository cutaways/voiceovers, but it’s more the fault of audiences than the filmmakers. 

Great stuff!!

Life and loss make absolutely no sense. Is it not the human condition to try our best to find meaning in the meaningless? To look for patterns, enemies, allies? A darkly funny look at the way our grief completely unravels us til we’re stark, naked, raving mad. Funny too that this is Cronenberg’s most explicitly Jewish film — some take comfort in knowing god has a plan, and those of us who feel smug in our atheism suddenly feel naked in times of need. Cassel somehow looks more like Cronenberg than Viggo Mortensen managed to, at times I couldn’t tell who I was looking at. Guy Pearce is so fucking funny he nearly steals every scene he’s in.  

For the ride or die Cronenberg heads, bonus points if you’ve read Consumed.

“How dark are you willing to go?”

Oliver Stone lined up an all timer cast of dudes to come in and absolutely cook for 15-25 minutes at a time. Beautiful stuff. 3 hours of levitating

A movie that seems to unspool endlessly (trying not to compare 35mm film to the titular white ribbon here) but by its final fade out I found myself wanting it not to end! A white ribbon to remind one of their own innocence and to steer one away from sin; a flimsy solution based more on appearance than anything. The pastor, who forces his children to wear white ribbons, essentially wears one around his neck in his work outfit. It certainly doesn’t stop him from caning his kids; his uniform buys the respect of those around him without his necessarily having earned it. 

Haneke seems to take Faulkner and invert his structure. Where Faulkner takes a look at a once proud Southern family in disrepair after the Civil War, Haneke uses an entire small village as the setting for his Eastern Gothic tale about the pre-cursors to WWI. Both ask “how did we get here?”, but the answers come from different points in their respective times. At the risk of being corny, they both answer for how we got here, now.

In the shadow play, acting out your own death, knowing no more …

The entirety of the universe is contained in the imagination of a child. The world is so fucked up and so random. We’re only here because a perfect set of coincidences led to our existence. Those insane coincidences echo forever, throughout eternity, building and destroying lives in perpetuity.

Rich people would rather play an insane game where you can literally DIE than reflect on their actions and try to be better people. It’s so sick. I love movies.

All timer performances from John Huston and Anthony Perkins in this beautiful, paranoid, hare-brained thriller. It’s so stupid I’m obsessed

Hands down best lesbian movie trope is “every man is a fucking idiot”

Looong second half but honestly Matt Damon as evil conniving dude who’s so horny for everyone and for power that he’s not even bisexual he’s just evilsexual is kind of a revelation? He slides into people like they’re a mask (pun intended).

In the tradition of Bad Lieutenant and co-starring Mads Mikkelsen, so I thought perhaps I’d finally meet a NWR that I liked…and it sits among the others as a cool exercise that is somehow just out of my grasp? I love a dude auteur, I love a garbage auteur, I love dirtbags, I love neon lights and pounding euro-techno in a club, yet the pieces don’t add up to much for me. 

I hate when people say “you didn’t like this NWR movie bc you’re a girl” I literally love stupid masculine dumbass shit so much, I’ve lost my feminist card 10 times over!! But damn i wish someone gave me a gun and a VR headset so I could’ve fucking killed the Pusher myself!! 

I love the way it’s shot, but goddamn I was rooting for Frank’s downfall the entire time. Excited to see Pusher 2 and catch up with my boy Tonny….

(Director’s Cut) alright it kinda drags, and there’s a Cats the musical thing going on makeup-wise BUT

Cronenberg looks great on camera and is clearly having an absolute BALL. The creature design is really fun. And who doesn’t love a horror movie about gay chosen family? Maybe one of the first to more explicitly make the connection between the gay community and monster folklore, and you simply gotta hand it to barker.

When Ruffalo said to Pattinson “are you afraid?” while surrounded by space bugs I pushed my glasses up the brim of my nose

Got to really lock in on the score this time around— final scene of the movie almost had me in tears! Howard Shore there is nobody else like you!

Hilarious to think about how the grossest thing in this movie (besides Vaughan’s unwashed hands) is the licking of fresh tattoos. Vile. 

Beautiful to see such a malleable, protean sexual fluidity. In Toronto I guess first base is bumping bumpers, second base is bumping uglies.

Somewhat like I said in my Sorcerer review, but…

“Porvenir,” a hotel named for coming and not for going. In every sense.

Really steamy and taut little thriller right here. Who cares about the details and figuring out what’s “really” going on, we’re submerged in the confusion and tension and fully along for this. Joe Alwyn in this is really a dude I’d risk my life for in a coup setting, and Margaret Qualley is a fucking livewire. The nightclub slow dance scene is classic Denis— a beautiful moment that’s perfectly sullied by reality, and yet, you’re not mad at all. Does that make sense?

This is what happens when a visual (I don’t want to use the word gimmick here) is married to storytelling in a way that serves the overall narrative: absolute magic and complete devastation.

The experience of girlhood has this insane universality that spans across years, locations, and technological innovation. In so many ways it feels like watching my own childhood. Really really nice 🥹

Really nice watch. Their chemistry is perfect and these guys feel so real

Hard to fully lock in on this when this feels like something that was created specifically for hot topic shoppers to watch

THE Al-Anon film. The people who suffer from the disease of alcoholism are truly so charming and so lovable which makes everything hurt so much more.

The chemistry between these two is actually insane, their songs are great, and god, hers are so bad. I think the worst thing really is that he’s right about that…you gotta look deep inside your soul or else you’ll lose your legs. Sam Elliot is so fucking good in this.

Hilarious to watch on an Air red eye hoping to fall asleep from wine and pear brandy but I made it all the way to the end, crying in silence, the only person on the plane whose screen was still on.

More in tune with the Straight Story than the weird side of Lynch. Sure, the bad guys are BAD, the mommy issues run deep, and the forces of evil aligned with aliens in black leather gloves and wicked witches. BUT in spite of twain Cajuns Grace Zabriskie and Isabella Rossellini, despite the weirdness and wildness of the world, love conquers all. Love unites us, love helps us to defeat the forces of evil. Don’t turn away from love!

(I love the dichotomy of femininity represented by Lula here— she wears leather and lace, nipples poking through sheer clothes, lingerie layered over leggings, her hair and nails and lipstick are all sex kitten. And yet, she’s got a beautiful innocence and a strict code of loyalty and morals. She sticks to herself, and all that it means, compromising for no one.)

Transgressive and with TACT, something only Verhoeven is still capable of. Every key event here is the full plot line of their own individual movies here, but Huppert’s protagonist floats through each traumatic event, resigned fully to them just being part of her life. Things rarely have a satisfying conclusion, but hey, at least they get taken care of in some way.

Club Silencio is where we, the viewer, can begin to surmise what is happening in this film. “¡No hay banda! And yet, we hear a band.” Rita (Laura Elena Harring) and Betty (Naomi Watts) cannot trust their senses; just because they can hear or see something does not mean that it is actually there. We are being told that everything is an illusion. (Even the “Llorona of Los Angeles,” Rebekah del Rio, wears a tear drop gem on her face.) But more importantly, almost all the information we gather through this scene is in Spanish, with a little bit of French, and very little English. We are not given subtitles for any of this. What Bondar (Richard Green) says in these different languages is not terribly complicated, and it’s likely that even if you don’t speak Spanish or French that you know exactly what he’s saying. Rebekah del Rio appears on stage and begins to sing ”Llorando,” which is Roy Orbison’s “Crying,” in Spanish. She sings it acapella, sin banda. “No me quieres ya/ y siempre estaré/ llorando por tu amor.” Even without being told what exactly she is singing, Betty and Rita are extremely moved by this, and in turn, we are moved by this scene. Much like how we as the viewer are able to discern what Bondar tells us despite not being entirely sure, the same is true of del Rio’s song. We can grab onto the pieces that feel familiar to us in order to begin to figure it out, be it a familiar melody or a cognate. Dreams are the way in which we process various stimuli that we experience throughout the day—everything we see in our waking time appears to us in different forms and contexts. Things feel recognizable and different at the same time. Dream logic seems bizarre and nonsensical to the waking mind, but to the dreamer it makes perfect sense. It is through our dreams that we receive pure information— our dreams are always trying to tell us something, even if we don’t understand the language. But once we do come to understand it, it becomes all too clear.

Completely upends the almost universally accepted “woman as protector of children” role in a way that spares nobody, least of all the viewer. I tried not to be complicit by closing my eyes, at least. 

Good deeds as laundering of reputation/psyche, the cycles of trauma, the complicated nature of being a teen who’s into adults and then growing into an adult reconciling with that and how it fucked you up on a subatomic level, all while still feeling light and airy, thanks to the summery French atmosphere. Yet here I was, saying “NOT AGAIN” the third time a certain scenario presented itself. Genuinely twisted shit.

Men Without Women.

When left to their own devices, they devolve into base filth: piss, shit, farts, jism, and puke. Dirty long Johns and vomit-caked facial hair. Edward Albee’s Hour of the Wolf. 

Essentially, a gooner picture.

A very interesting watch all these years later, really wish it was picked up for the full series. I’m so bummed David Lynch didn’t work with Crispin Glover more (small part in Wild At Heart aside).

Perhaps one of my favorite tricks? Sight gags? was that when there was a pair of guys, there was always one black coat and one tan.

There is nothing more devastating than realizing you won’t get to spend your entire life with the person you love the most, imagine trying to fit that lifetime into roughly four days.

It must be nice to always believe you know better, to always think you’re the smartest person in the room…

Me (5’2”), or Holly Hunter (5’1”): NO IT’S AWFUL

When pushed to the brink by the economy and the white collar criminals who rule the world, the working class has no other option but to react. The fact that more people don’t do this is astonishing.

Stunning film about women and the ways we (and hurt) each other. Almodovar is the first director I think of when I see the color RED, and here it’s everything: it’s loss, sex, “woman trouble,” and the beautiful cardigan Cruz wears. 

Volver, SENTIR

Insane how perfectly this skewers our desire to consume real life horror. The literal picture disintegrates more and more as we get to the third act, the sound explodes into pandemonium. There is evil baked into the movie but the evil is you, the viewer.
