A film that is as tender as it is brutal in its consistency, with indulgent, melancholy images. Almost excessively true to the motto “show, don't tell”, Haley Elizabeth Anderson fills the patchy narrative with set pieces that unveil Dakota's (“Kota”) coming-of-age with bursting energy.
Kota is in her early 20s and lives with her boyfriend Yuri in Coney Island in the south of New York City. When he travels back to Ukraine, she is left alone and expecting a child. In a maelstrom of lack of money and personal misfortune, Kota searches for a foothold in life.

It is often the case that films wallow in the suffering of their characters and are then quickly labeled misery porn, which in my opinion has nothing to do with the exploitation effect in most cases. However, it is precisely here that the story does not bathe in Kota's burden, but remains by her side as a broken star of dreams with empathy.
The cinematic device of nostalgic handheld camera aesthetics is by no means innovative. However, I find it more than appropriate here, as the reflection of shots from the 80s mirrors the fleeting nature of life as an amusement park. Nelson Sullivan's shots show the queer nightlife of New York at the time.

Actress Kota Johan is a force to be reckoned with here, convincingly switching sides of her character between playful infatuation, naive daydreams and flaming anger like a primal force.

Fast schon exzessiv wird dem Motto „Show, don’t tell“ treu geblieben, Haley Elizabeth Anderson füllt die lückenhafte Erzählung mit Versatzstücken, die das Coming-of-Age von Dakota („Kota“) mit berstender Energie entblättern.
Kota ist Anfang 20 und lebt mit ihrem Freund Yuri in Coney Island im Süden von New York City. Als er zurück in die Ukraine reist, bleibt sie alleine zurück und erwartet ein Kind. In einem Strudel aus Geldmangel und persönlichen Schicksalsschlägen sucht Kota Halt im Leben.

Oft ist es so, dass sich Filme geradezu im Leid ihrer Figuren suhlen und dann schnell den Stempel Misery Porn aufgedrückt bekommen, der meiner Meinung nach in den meisten Fällen nichts mit Exploitation-Effekt zu tun hat. Doch gerade hier badet die Geschichte nicht in Kotas Last, sondern bleibt als zerbrochener Stern der Träume mit Empathie an ihrer Seite.
Das filmische Mittel von nostalgischer Handkameraästhetik ist beileibe nicht mehr innovativ. Nur finde ich ihn gerade hier mehr als end, da die Reflexion von Aufnahmen aus den 80er-Jahren die Flüchtigkeit des Lebens als Vergnügungspark spiegelt. In den Aufnahmen von Nelson Sullivan ist das queere Nachtleben von New York aus der Zeit zu sehen.

Darstellerin Kota Johan ist hier eine Wucht und wechselt, einer Urgewalt gleich, überzeugend die Seiten ihrer Figur zwischen verspielter Verliebtheit, naiven Tagträumen und flammendem Zorn.

Ich sah einen Film, der in fein komponierten Tableaus mit starrer Kamera über Menschen erzählt. Über das Sein, Sinn und Absurditäten des Lebens. Eine Zelebrierung von Dilemma und Wurzel von Sünden, die grotesk aufgelöst werden. Wie ein Gemälde sind die Szenen arrangiert, vorhandene und nicht vorhandene Gegenstände aus dem Farbfächer bilden den visuellen Look.
Allerdings werden mir die affektierten Schnipsel schnell langweilig. Mit der theaterhaften Künstlichkeit der Inszenierung und gewollt lakonischer Dramaturgie kann ich nichts anfangen. Vielleicht schmunzelt Roy Andersson in sich hinein, wenn er daran denkt, wie sein Publikum ebenso steinern auf die Leinwand starrt.

I saw a film that tells a story about people in finely composed tableaus with a fixed camera. About being, the meaning and absurdities of life. A celebration of dilemma and the root of sins that are grotesquely dissolved. The scenes are arranged like a painting, with existing and non-existent objects from the color palette forming the visual look.
However, I quickly get bored of the affected snippets. The theatrical artificiality of the staging and the deliberately laconic dramaturgy do nothing for me. Perhaps Roy Andersson smiles to himself when he thinks about how his audience stares at the screen just as stonily.

Yuri, who is in her mid-twenties, lets her life drift along. During the Covid pandemic, activities are restricted and social life comes to a standstill. As her mother travels to visit her grandmother who has fallen ill, Juri takes over her snack bar with the legendary gimbap rolls.

I sometimes have a soft spot for schmaltzy Korean dramas with a soundtrack dripping with sesame oil, but the story here bobs along in its lethargy. Surely also intended as a symbol of lockdown and standstill during Covid, it shows that even today no one can really go back in time and the narrative is ageing badly. Capturing everyday life with the help of a DV camera gives the production an extra dose of nostalgia, but the staging is too conventional and the editing uninspired. But now I'm really hungry and in the mood for Kimbap.

Die Mittzwanzigerin Juri lässt ihr Leben so vor sich hin treiben. Während der Covid-Pandemie sind Aktivitäten eingeschränkt und das soziale Leben kommt zum Erliegen. Da ihre Mutter zur erkrankten Oma reist, übernimmt Juri ihren Imbiss mit den legendären Gimbap-Rollen.

Ich habe mitunter ein Herz für schmalzige Korea-Dramen mit dem voll Sesamöl triefenden Soundtrack, doch dümpelt die Geschichte hier in ihrer Lethargie vor sich hin. Sicher auch als Symbol von Lockdown und Stillstand während Covid gedacht, zeigt es, dass sich selbst heute schon niemand mehr so richtig in die Zeit zurückversetzen kann und die Narrative schlecht altern. Das Festhalten des Alltags mithilfe einer DV-Kamera gibt der Inszenierung nochmal einen Schwung Nostalgie, doch ist die Inszenierung zu konventionell und der Schnitt uninspiriert. Aber nun habe ich echt Hunger und richtig Bock auf Gimbap.

In den Tagen der Mitternachtssonne erhebt sich ein matter Glanz durch die Nächte. Wenn dann das Licht zerbricht, wird die Schwere von Verlust zu Kollektivschmerz. Mathematisch gesehen wäre aus philosophischer Betrachtung die Teilung von Glück zwischen zwei Menschen eine Verdopplung. Doch bei Schmerz ist es andersherum. Geteilter Schmerz nimmt die Last von Menschen, eine Versöhnung mit dem Unbegreiflichen.

Viele Filmemacher:innen versuchen einem aktuellen Trend gleich, in langen Filmen und Mehrteilern episch viel zu erzählen. Doch die Kunst liegt in der Konzentration auf das Wesentliche in verdichteten Dialogen und zarten Blicken, die über ein Meer an Augenblicken erzählen. In dieser Konsequenz kommt die letzte Szene ohne Worte aus und dennoch ist alles gesagt.
Der Knackpunkt ist hier die heimliche Liebe mit dem Verunglückten. Als seine bisherige Freundin in der trauernden Clique eintrifft (mal wieder aus den Westfjorden), muss sie selber ihre Gefühle zurückhalten. Das ist in einer Weise bewegend von Elín Hall und Katla Njálsdóttir (aus dem gelungenen Heartstone) dargestellt, dass mir meine Gänsehaut die Haare aus den Follikeln rupft.

Visuell und akustisch ist Wenn das Licht zerbricht eine Ode an Anmut und Wucht von Filmkunst. Rúnar Rúnarsson legt in seinem Film viel Wert auf die Wirkung von Licht, welche in den Breitengraden Islands mit einem körnig-intensiven Kontrast ein Geschenk ist. Haarpa und Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík sind dadurch beeindruckend in Szene gesetzt. Der Soundtrack von Jóhann Jóhannsson (die heißen beide tatsächlich so) schwelgt mit seinen experimentellen Klängen in Elegie und trifft ins Herz. Als Gegenentwurf darf sich im Heraustanzen des Leidens der Beitrag von Hatari andienen, die Island beim ESC 2019 vertraten.

In the days of the midnight sun, a dull glow rises through the nights. When the light breaks, the heaviness of loss becomes collective pain. From a philosophical point of view, the division of happiness between two people would be a doubling. But with pain it is the other way around. Shared pain takes the burden off people, a reconciliation with the incomprehensible.

Following a current trend, many filmmakers try to tell epic stories in long films and multi-part movies. But the art lies in concentrating on the essentials in condensed dialogs and delicate glances that tell of a sea of moments. With this consistency, the last scene manages without words and yet everything is said.
The crux of the matter here is the secret love affair with the victim of the accident. When his former girlfriend s the grieving clique (once again from the Westfjords), she has to hold back her own feelings. This is portrayed so movingly by Elín Hall and Katla Njálsdóttir (from the touching Heartstone) that my goose bumps pluck the hair out of my follicles.

Visually and acoustically, When the Light Breaks is an ode to the grace and power of cinematic art. In his film, Rúnar Rúnarsson places great emphasis on the effect of light, which is a gift in Iceland's latitudes with their grainy, intense contrast. Haarpa and Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík are thus impressively staged. The soundtrack by Jóhann Jóhannsson (they are both actually called that) indulges in elegies with its experimental sounds and hits the heart. The contribution by Hatari, who represented Iceland at the ESC 2019, can serve as a counterpart to the dancing out of suffering.

Wie eine brachiale Version zweier Liebenden aus verschiedenen Milieus funktioniert der Film als Gangsterthriller, aber auch überzeugend als Liebesdrama. Dynamisch trägt die hervorragende Kameraführung mit Fixierung an Objekten die visuelle Narration zum sentimentalen Soundtrack. Optisch und akustisch einfach ein Herzklopfen.
In den 80er Jahren wachsen Jackie und Clotaire auf. Sie kommt aus einer wohlhabenden Familie und wechselt von einem Internat auf die öffentliche Schule. Diese ist für ihn nur zum Gelegenheitsbesuch da, er lebt lieber mit einer Bande in den Tag und die Unterwelt hinein. Eine heimliche Romanze beginnt, die jäh beendet wird, nachdem Clotaire als Sündenbock im Gefängnis landet. Doch nach 10 Jahren ist Jackies Leben nicht stehengeblieben.

Eigentlich sind hier zwei Filme in einem zu sehen. Die Vorgeschichte der jüngeren Jackie und Clotaire wird ausgiebig zelebriert, Mallory Wanecque und Malik Frikah spielen das sehr überzeugend. Folglich kommen erst spät Adèle Exarchopoulos und François Civil zum Zuge, die beide auf der Suche nach ihrem verlorenen Leben ihre Herzen sprechen lassen. Exarchopoulos erneut mit emotionalen Szenen, in denen Rotz und Wasser geheult wird. Offenbar ihr Signature-Move.

Einem Teufelskreis gleich wird die Milieustudie zur Kritik an Strukturen und Gerechtigkeit, übernimmt sich aber nicht in ihren Feststellungen. Sperrig-impulsive Charaktere können dies auch bleiben, ohne es mit Sozialromantik und Verherrlichung von Kriminalität zu übertreiben. Die gute Musikauswahl der 80er und 90er macht den Film geschmeidig und derb zugleich. The Cure mit einem verbindenden Song zwischen den beiden Turteltäubchen könnte nicht ender sein.

Like a brute version of two lovers from different milieus, the film works as a gangster thriller, but also convincingly as a romantic drama. The outstanding camera work with its fixation on objects dynamically carries the visual narrative to the sentimental soundtrack. Visually and acoustically simply heart-stopping, meh -beating.
Jackie and Clotaire grow up in the 80s. She comes from a wealthy family and moves from boarding school to public school. Exarchopoulos once again has emotional scenes in which she cries her eyes out. Obviously her signature move.

Like a vicious circle, the milieu study becomes a critique of structures and justice, but does not overreach itself in its observations. Bulky, impulsive characters can remain so without overdoing it with social romanticism and the glorification of crime. The good choice of music from the 80s and 90s makes the movie smooth and rough at the same time. The Cure with a connecting song between the two lovebirds couldn't be more fitting.

Einfach ein Lieblingsgenre: Französ:innen, die bei gutem Wein und Essen über Texte von Sartre philosophieren. Dazu dieses Understatement an Inszenierung, verbleibend im Naturalismus. Interessant zu beobachten, wie viele Details im Laufe des Films in Blau gehalten sind. Eine Referenz auf die Comicvorlage von Jul Maroh, in der sich jenes als visuelles Konzept durch die s zieht. Was wäre aus dem Film geworden, wenn dieser einen Sepia-Ton mit fokussiertem Blaufilter bekommen hätte?

Die exploitativen Sexszenen entspringen wohl eher der Männerfantasie des Regisseurs. Dass sie zur Erzählung nichts beitragen, mag einer der Kritikpunkte sein. Aber den Film darauf zu reduzieren, halte ich für unend, da das Werk grundsätzlichere handwerkliche Mängel hat.
Vielleicht liegt es an der ursprünglichen Strukturierung in zwei getrennte Teile, aber mir ist der Film insgesamt zu lang. Kontemplativer Naturalismus hin oder her, eine halbe bis eine Stunde hätten von den drei Stunden durchaus weggenommen werden können, ohne das Aufblühen und die Entfaltung von Adèle zu stören. Zudem sind mir einige Einstellungen zu kitschig, aus dem Handbuch der Filmhochschule: Minutenlanges Geknutsche gegen das Sonnenlicht im Hintergrund? Bitte nicht ...

Den Film retten eigentlich die beiden grandiosen Hauptdarstellerinnen. Exarchopoulos und Seydoux spielen sich hier die Seele aus dem Leib. Sturzbäche der Tränen, Rotz und Wasser in Nahaufnahme der Handkamera lassen das cineastische Herz jubeln. Die Café-Szene zum Ende ist unglaublich intensiv gespielt.

Simply a favorite genre: French people philosophizing about texts by Sartre over good wine and food. Plus this understatement of staging, remaining in naturalism. Interesting to see how many details are kept in blue throughout the movie. A reference to the comic book by Jul Maroh, in which blue is a visual concept that runs through the s. What would have become of the film if it had been given a sepia tone with a focused blue filter?

The exploitative sex scenes probably stem more from the director's male fantasy. The fact that they contribute nothing to the narrative may be one of the points of criticism. But I don't think it's appropriate to reduce the movie to that, as the work has more fundamental technical flaws.
Perhaps it is due to the original structuring into two separate parts, but for me the movie is too long overall. Contemplative naturalism or not, half an hour to an hour could have been taken out of the three hours without disturbing the blossoming and unfolding of Adèle. In addition, some shots are too cheesy for me, straight out of the film school handbook: minutes of making out against the sunlight in the background? Please don't ...

The movie is actually saved by the two terrific leading actresses. Exarchopoulos and Seydoux play their hearts out here. Torrents of tears, snot and water in close-ups with the hand-held camera make the cinematic heart rejoice. The café scene at the end is incredibly intense.

Wiederentdeckte und restaurierte Stop-Motion-Animation aus dem Estland der 70er. Über Tableaus und knallige Kulissen werden Erfindungen der Menschheit über einen Mann symbolisiert, der von der Steinzeit bis in die Moderne das Rad und Mechanik hin zum Automobil nutzbar macht. Bei der Tricktechnik hätte meiner Meinung nach auch zu dieser Zeit noch mehr herausgeholt werden können. Der Kurzfilm lebt eigentlich durch seine farbenfrohe Gestaltung und den psychedelischen Soundtrack.

Using tableaux and gaudy backdrops, the inventions of mankind are symbolized by a man who, from the Stone Age to modern times, makes the wheel and mechanics usable for the automobile. In my opinion, more could have been achieved with the animation technology, even at this time. The short film really comes alive with its colorful design and psychedelic soundtrack.

Wenn David Cronenberg einen Horrorfilm inszeniert, kommen selbst dann gruselige Body-Horror-Elemente zum Einsatz, wenn die Geschichte eigentlich ziemlich persönlich und tiefgründig daherkommt.
Frank stellt Blutergüsse auf dem Rücken seiner Tochter fest. Mutter Nola ist in psychiatrischer Therapie bei Dr. Raglan, der alternative Behandlungsmethoden anwendet. Entstellte Kinder suchen verschiedene Personen im Umkreis Heim.

Der Film spielt mit der kindlichen Angst, unter dem Bett oder in der nächsten Ecke lauert eine unbekannte Kreatur. Zugleich sitzt in jedem von uns die Furcht vor körperlichem Verfall und Missbildung. Auch das wird hier ausgespielt, doch liegt der Fokus mehr auf dem Mentalen. So ganz konsequent ist es nicht ausgeführt, aber die Ansätze von Misshandlung der Kinder dirch ihre Eltern sind klar erkennbar. Als weitergegebenes Trauma über Generationen hinweg breitet sich „die Brut“ als Riss der kindlichen Seele aus und bestimmt das restliche Leben.

When David Cronenberg directs a horror film, creepy body horror elements are used even when the story is actually quite personal and profound.
Frank discovers bruises on his daughter's back. Mother Nola is undergoing psychiatric therapy with Dr. Raglan, who uses alternative treatment methods. Disfigured children seek out various people in the neighborhood.

The movie plays with the child's fear that an unknown creature is lurking under the bed or in the next corner. At the same time, there is a fear of physical decay and deformity in all of us. This is also played out here, but the focus is more on the mental. It is not executed quite consistently, but the beginnings of mistreatment of children by their parents are clearly recognizable. As a trauma ed down through generations, “the brood” spreads as a rift in the child's soul and determines the rest of their lives.

The movie doesn't spend much time on exposition. Right at the beginning, we see Irene killing her daughter's murderer. That could have been it, but Irene has a time machine in a practical box and she waits for him again in the next parallel world. Once, however, she is able to save the teenager Mia from him, who sticks by her side.

A multiverse with a difference. I like the fact that they don't even try to explain it technically or logically in any great detail. In the spirit of the title of “Back and Forth”, the premise is basically the essence of a Revenge movie. Revenge not as an end in itself, but also as a burden that consumes you and makes you become a different person.
Brothers Kevin and Matthew McManus direct a stylish thriller with a good soundtrack and convincing acting. Their sister Michaela is a little pale in the role of Irene, is that simply a lack of skill or resignation? On the other hand, I think Stella Marcus is stronger as Mia.

Lange hält sich der Film nicht mit Exposition auf. Direkt zum Einstieg sehen wir Irene, wie sie den Mörder ihrer Tochter umnietet. Das könnte es auch schon gewesen sein, aber Irene hat eine Zeitmaschine in einer praktischen Schatulle und in der nächsten Parallelwelt wartet sie erneut auf ihn. Einmal jedoch kann sie die Teenagerin Mia vor ihm retten, die sich an ihre Seite heftet.

Ein Multiverse mal anders. Gut gefällt mir, dass gar nicht erst versucht wird, es technisch und logisch in irgendeiner Weise groß zu erklären. Im Sinne des Titels von „Hin und her“ ist die Prämisse im Prinzip die Essenz eines Revenge-Films. Rache nicht als Selbstzweck, sondern auch als Bürde, die einen auffrisst und zu einer anderen Person werden lässt.
Die Brüder Kevin und Matthew McManus inszenieren einen stylishen Thriller mit gutem Soundtrack. Deren Schwester Michaela ist etwas blass in der Rolle von Irene, ist das einfach nicht gekonnt oder Resignation? Stärker finde ich hingegen Stella Marcus als Mia.

There are films that struggle to develop a good idea and, with a bit of luck, the right staging can make it work. Memoir of a Snail, however, is bursting with ideas and is able to combine subtle punchlines with dark themes of the human condition.
Grace tells her story off-screen about her childhood and her life in Australia in the 1970s, where she lives with her twin brother Gilbert. When they are separated by child services, Grace hoards snails and all sorts of things that look like snails.

Adam Elliot stays true to his Claymation style and also has a similar concept to the narrative as in Mary & Max. The snail shell as a morbid metaphor of introversion - even the jelly beans are black here. The visual imagery is so detailed that not everything can be taken in on the first viewing.
In the spirit of “A Vitamine of Hope”, the film always has a flame of humanity and positivism glowing between the heavy themes of depression, dementia and many more.

Es gibt Filme, die haben Mühe, eine gute Idee zu entwickeln, und mit Glück wird es mit der richtigen Inszenierung etwas. Memoir of a Snail allerdings sprüht nur so vor Ideen und kann subtile Pointen mit düsteren Themen des Menschseins verknüpfen.
Grace erzählt ihre Geschichte aus dem Off von ihrer Kindheit und ihrem Leben im Australien der 70er Jahre, in der sie mit ihrem Zwillingsbruder Gilbert lebt. Als sie vom Jugendamt getrennt werden, hortet Grace Schnecken und alle möglichen Dinge, die wie Schnecken aussehen.

Adam Elliot bleibt seinem Stil von Claymation treu und hat auch ein ähnliches Konzept der Erzählung wie in Mary & Max. Das Schneckenhaus als morbide Metapher der Introvertiertheit – selbst die Jelly Beans sind hier schwarz. Die visuelle Bildsprache ist so detailverliebt, dass bei der ersten Sichtung gar nicht alles aufgenommen werden kann.
Im Sinne von „A Vitamine of Hope“ hat der Film zwischen den schweren Themen wie Depression, Demenz und vielen mehr, immer auch eine Flamme der Humanität und Positivismus am glimmen.

Luc reluctantly accepts his parents' invitation to come to a party in his home village for the weekend and bring his fiancée Nikiya with him. However, the family has a very special hobby, and we can guess why Luc is a vegetarian.

Within the metaphor of Lion and Lioness, the clichéd story is fitting for the horror setting. I like the editing and the image design, the camera work is often too conventional for me. At least there is a good one-shot to introduce the characters during the party. The characters are well acted, mainly due to Uzoamaka Aniunoh's strong performance as Nikiya. The English of the OV can be understood well, even if it was announced differently beforehand.
Perhaps it was due to the intense sound of auditorium 2 in Zoopalast. But especially towards the end, it is noticeable that the Foley editor meant too well and all the steps and touching of objects sound exaggeratedly artificial, as if in a kind of overacting.

Nur widerwillig steigt Luc auf die Einladung seiner Eltern ein, zum Wochenende zu einer Feier im Dorf seiner Heimat zu kommen und seine Verlobte Nikiya mitzubringen. Die Familie hat allerdings ein sehr spezielles Hobby, und wir ahnen, warum Luc Vegetarier ist.

Im Rahmen der Metapher von Lion und Lioness ist die klischeehafte Geschichte end für das Horror-Setting. Mir gefallen der Schnitt und die Bildgestaltung, die Kameraführung ist mir oft zu konventionell. Immerhin gibt es einen guten One-Shot zur Vorstellung der Figuren während der Party. Die Figuren sind gut gespielt, das liegt vor allem an der starken Leistung von Uzoamaka Aniunoh als Nikiya. Das Englisch vom OV kann gut verstanden werden, auch wenn das zuvor anders angekündigt wurde.
Vielleicht lag es am intensiven Sound von Saal 2 im Zoopalast. Aber vor allem zum Ende fällt auf, dass der Foley Editor es zu gut gemeint hat und sämtliche Schritte und Berührungen von Gegenständen wie in einer Art Overacting sich übertrieben künstlich anhören.

A Korean ghost horror in a high-rise complex about grief and loss. Watching it in cinema 2 of the Zoopalast with the crisp sound system was a pleasure, as the movie plays intensively with sounds. Like a primal fear, the gruesome sounds create an inner restlessness.
Ju-young has been living with her sister Ju-Hee in an apartment in a high-rise complex for a few weeks. Their parents died in a car accident and Ju-young has been hard of hearing ever since. After Ju-Hee hears sensitive noises from the neighboring apartments, she disappears without a trace. Ju-young searches for her in the neighborhood and in the catacombs of the high-rise basements and is threatened by psychopathic neighbors. A new hearing aid makes the walls talk.

After just 10 minutes, I realize that the main character's perspective is one of unreliable narration. But this is skillfully played with by visual narration until the final twist, which confirmed my suspicions. Chapeau, I was constantly unsure and feeling the madness of the housemates.
Most of us will have thought at one time or another that the neighbors are deliberately annoying you with noises. Where the walls have ears and the mind plays tricks on you, paranoia is not far away.

Ein koreanischer Geister-Grusel in einem Hochhauskomplex über Trauer und Verlust. Jenen im Saal 2 vom Zoopalast mit der knackigen Soundanlage anzusehen, war ein Genuss, da der Film intensiv mit Geräuschen spielt. Wie eine Urangst sorgen die grauenhaften Laute für eine innere Unruhe.
Seit ein paar Wochen wohnt Ju-young mit ihrer Schwester Ju-Hee in einem Apartment eines Hochhauskomplexes. Die Eltern starben bei einem Autounfall, Ju-young ist seitdem schwerhörig. Nachdem Ju-Hee empfindliche Geräusche aus den Nachbarwohnungen hört, verschwindet sie spurlos. Ju-young sucht sie im Viertel und in den Katakomben der Hochhauskeller und wird von psychopathischen Nachbarn bedroht. Ein neues Hörgerät lässt die Wände sprechen.

Schon nach 10 Minuten wird mir klar, dass die Perspektive der Hauptfigur eine des unzuverlässigen Erzählens ist. Damit wird aber durch visuelle Narration gekonnt gespielt bis zum finalen Twist, der meine Ahnung bestätigte. Chapeau, ich war ständig unsicher und fühlte den Wahnsinn der Hausbewohner.
Die meisten von uns werden schon mal gedacht haben, dass die Nachbarn einen absichtlich mit Geräuschen nerven. Wo die Wände Ohren haben und der Geist einem Streiche spielt, ist die Paranoia nicht weit.

Atmospherically, the sheep thriller knows how to place its fantastic landscape shots in the Irish mountains and reveal the raw dynamics. A dispute between two sheep farming families ends in the mistreatment of Michael's horn bearers. A bloody chase begins between the lush meadows. Michael clashes with Gary and his son Jack.

The mood in this revenge flick is depressingly gloomy, as in The Banshees of Inisherin. The film benefits from its non-linear narrative style, effectively staged, plot lines from flashbacks and the present converge. In the broadest sense, it is also a treatise on guilt, atonement and life chances.
Christopher Abbott plays Michael very convincingly, he has apparently even learned some Gaelic. The rest of the cast, including Barry Keoghan and Colm Meaney, is also worth seeing.

Ein Streit zwischen zwei Schafzüchterfamilien endet in der Misshandlung von Michaels Hornträgern. Eine blutige Verfolgungsjagd beginnt zwischen den saftigen Wiesen. Mit Gary und seinem Sohn Jack gerät Michael aneinander.

Deprimierend düster, wie in The Banshees of Inisherin, ist die Stimmung in dem Rache-Streifen. Dem Film kommt die nichtlineare Erzählweise zugute, effektiv inszeniert laufen Plotlinien aus Rückblicken und Gegenwart zusammen. Im weitesten Sinne auch eine Abhandlung über Schuld, Sühne und Lebenschancen.
Christopher Abbott spielt den Michael sehr überzeugend, er hat offenbar sogar etwas Gälisch gelernt. Auch der restliche Cast aus Barry Keoghan und Colm Meaney ist sehenswert.

Eddie would rather not have done that. The petty thief gets into an open, abandoned car in NYC and suddenly finds himself stranded. A certain William answers the phone and plays mind games with him.
Like a mixture of Saw and Daddio, we now see how Eddie tries to escape from the “game” and how conversations about morality and the meaning of life are bantered about. Of course, no real philosophical insights into mankind and society should be expected in this claustrophobic survival thriller.

Films with this simple premise must have a concept that carries the tension and action throughout. It succeeds to some extent - Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins are so strong that they are enough to be the only actors in a movie. This much can be revealed: Not only do we hear Hopkins' voice, we also see him later on.
The bloody interludes are powerfully staged and the blurring of the mind is suitably unpleasant to watch. Somehow I still missed something at the end. The technical logic errors of the vehicle and the generic interludes of NY from the stock archive cloud my impression.

Das hätte Eddie lieber nicht gemacht. Der Gelegenheitsdieb steigt in NYC in ein offenes, herrenloses Auto und sitzt plötzlich fest. Über Telefon meldet sich ein gewisser William und treibt seine Psychospielchen mit ihm.
Wie in einer Mischung aus Saw und Daddio sehen wir nun, wie Eddie aus dem „Spiel“ zu fliehen versucht und wie in Gesprächen über Moral und Lebenssinn gefaselt wird. Wirkliche philosophische Erkenntnisse zu Mensch und Gesellschaft dürfen in dem klaustrophobischen Survival-Thriller natürlich nicht erwartet werden.

Filme mit dieser simplen Prämisse müssen ein Konzept haben, welches die Spannung und Action die ganze Zeit über trägt. Das gelingt ihm auch teilweise – Bill Skarsgård und Anthony Hopkins sind so stark, dass sie als einzige Darsteller in einem Film ausreichen. So viel sei verraten: Wir hören nicht nur die Stimme von Hopkins, sondern sehen ihn auch später.
Die blutigen Einlagen sind wuchtig inszeniert und das Verschwimmen des Verstandes ist end unangenehm anzuschauen. Irgendwie hat mir zum Schluss trotzdem etwas gefehlt. Die technischen Logikfehler vom Fahrzeug und die generischen Zwischenszenen von NY aus dem Stock-Archiv trüben meinen Eindruck.

A young woman is arrested when found with a shotgun in her hand in the house of a popular writer - the author dead after being hit several times. In custody, she only wants to talk to investigator Min-ju. It turns out that In-seon and Min-ju were school friends and In-seon was abducted as a girl. Of course, the investigation becomes personal and reaches deep into the past.

The thriller with typical Korean theatricality and noir elements is somewhat predictable, but well written and directed. The narrative reminds me of a mixture of the recent Glaskupan and Monster.
It doesn't hold back with a sharp note against a sensationalist press and protection of public figures, but unfortunately a few scenes are presented in an excessively illogical manner. As in other crime thrillers from Korea, the investigating authorities do not come off well here either. Red herrings are repeatedly dropped, but so are clues that later lead to the trail.
A solid debut from Chun Sunyoung, hopefully there will be more to come.

Im Haus eines populären Schriftstellers wird eine junge Frau mit Schrotflinte in der Hand festgenommen – der Autor liegt mit mehreren Treffern tod darnieder. In der Haft will sie nur mit Ermittlerin Min-ju sprechen. Es stellt sich heraus, dass In-seon und Min-ju Schulfreundinnen waren und In-seon als Mädchen entführt wurde. Natürlich werden die Ermittlungen persönlich und reichen tief in die Vergangenheit zurück.

Der Thriller mit typisch koreanischer Theatralik und Noir-Elementen ist etwas vorhersehbar, aber gut geschrieben und inszeniert. Erinnert mich von der Erzählung an eine Mischung aus zuletzt Glaskupan und Monster.
Mit scharfer Note gegen eine reißerische Presse und Schutz von öffentlichen Personen hält er sich nicht zurück, leider werden hier ein paar Szenen dann doch übertrieben unlogisch präsentiert. Wie in anderen Krimis aus Korea kommen auch hier die Ermittlungsbehörden nicht gut weg. Immer wieder werden Red Herrings fallen gelassen, aber auch Indizien, die später zur Spur führen.
Ein stabiles Debüt von Chun Sunyoung, da kommt hoffentlich noch mehr.

What an amusing surprise, I couldn't get the grin off my face during the movie. A punk turned movie who doesn't care what others think of him - wild, laconic and dripping with anarchy.
Hanako is the front woman of the punk band The Gesuidouz and wants her breakthrough before her 27th birthday - like all the greats of rock. Unfortunately, nobody comes to the club gigs and the CD is also a slow seller, even the manager of the label has forgotten to release it. They are supposed to write a hit in the Japanese countryside between fields.

ittedly, the movie is unwieldy and definitely a matter of taste. There are a few lengths to endure, but if you get involved with the concept, it's hilarious. It could have gone on longer, and I don't say that about many movies.
The band all get their mini-subplot for characterization, but they often just stand around silently and let Hanako act. A talking dog and literally vomited songs with talking MCs bring the references to classic horror films to life.
Natsuko plays Hanako with an almost fatalistic interpretation, nothing seems to be exaggerated. The fictional band are professional musicians who actually play in other bands. The final song is even easy to listen to, like a punk version of Babymetal: Smells Like a Zombie

Was für eine vergnügliche Überraschung, ich habe während des Films das Grinsen nicht aus dem Gesicht bekommen. Ein Film gewordener Punk, der sich nicht darum schert, was andere über ihn denken – wild, lakonisch und triefend voll Anarchie.
Hanako ist Frontfrau der Punkband The Gesuidouz und will vor ihrem 27. Geburtstag den Durchbruch – wie alle Größen des Rocks. Nur leider kommt keiner zu den Club-Gigs und die CD ist auch ein Ladenhüter, selbst der Manager vom Label hat vergessen, sie zu veröffentlichen. Auf dem Land in Japan zwischen Feldern sollen sie einen Hit schreiben.

Zugegeben, der Film ist sperrig und definitiv Geschmackssache. Einige Längen müssen ausgehalten werden, aber wenn man sich auf das Konzept einlässt, ist es urkomisch. Er hätte gerne noch länger gehen können, und das sage ich nicht von vielen Filmen.
Die Bandmitglieder bekommen zwar alle ihren Mini-Subplot zur Charakterisierung, doch stehen sie oft einfach nur stillschweigend in der Gegend rum und lassen Hanako agieren. Ein sprechender Hund und im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes hingekotzte Songs mit sprechenden MCs lassen die Anspielungen auf Klassiker von Horrorfilmen aufleben.
Natsuko spielt Hanako mit einer geradezu fatalistischen Interpretation, nichts scheint übertrieben zu sein. Die fiktive Band sind professionelle Musiker:innen, die eigentlich in anderen Bands spielen. Der finale Song ist sogar gut hörbar, wie eine Punk-Version von Babymetal: Smells Like a Zombie

Italian gangster movie meets Chinese martial arts - what a combination. Mei grows up as the second child in the family during the one-child policy in China - hidden from the family, her father teaches her kung fu. She lets herself be smuggled to Rome by human traffickers to look for her missing sister in a brothel. Unexpectedly, she meets chef Marcello. The Italian tearjerker with Chinese theatricality takes its course, Amore lies in the eternal city.

In Forgotten City, Gabriele Mainetti immediately gets going and brings out all the guns of a revenge film: Between the fronts of the Italian and Chinese mafia, the lackeys naturally underestimate the inconspicuous Mei. In the kitchen and industrial halls, everything becomes a weapon: hot water, cheese graters, railings, CDs - bones burst, the epidermis is put to the test, we know the drill.

The fights are well choreographed and Yaxi Liu's stunts are fantastic. However, I find the first third unnecessarily confusing. Withholding some of the information about the relationships until later does little for the narrative and seems too contrived to me. The set pieces and equipment are of high quality and leave me with an overall satisfied impression.

Italienischer Gangsterfilm trifft auf chinesische Martial Arts – was für eine Kombi. Mei wächst als zweites Kind der Familie zu Zeiten der Ein-Kind-Politik in China auf – versteckt von der Familie, lehrt sie ihr Vater Kung-Fu. Von Menschenhändlern lässt sie sich nach Rom schleusen, um ihre vermisste Schwester in einem Bordell zu suchen. Unverhofft trifft sie auf Koch Marcello. Die italienische Schnulze mit chinesischer Theatralik nimmt ihren Lauf, Amore liegt in der ewigen Stadt.

In Forgotten City, so der internationale Titel (zu Deutsch: Kung Fu in Rome, hm…) legt Gabriele Mainetti sofort los und fährt alle Geschütze eines Rachefilms auf: Zwischen den Fronten der italienischen und chinesischen Mafia unterschätzen die Lakaien natürlich die unauffällige Mei. In Küche und Industriehallen wird alles zur Waffe: heißes Wasser, Käsereibe, Geländer, CDs – Knochen bersten, die Epidermis wird auf eine harte Probe gestellt, wir kennen das.

Die Kämpfe sind gut choreografiert und Yaxi Liu als Darstellerin ist fantastisch in ihren Stunts. Ich finde allerdings das erste Drittel unnötig konfus erzählt. Die zurückgehaltenen Infos zu den Beziehungen teilweise erst später aufzulösen, bringt der Narration wenig und wirkt mir zu konstruiert. Set Pieces und Ausstattung sind wertig und lassen mich mit einem insgesamt zufriedenen Eindruck zurück.

A family near Buenos Aires tries to survive after any people who come into with the suddenly appearing snow perish. The series quickly devolves into anarchy according to the usual narrative of a zombie apocalypse.

The most interesting aspect, in my opinion, is that the story is based on an Argentinian comic from the 1950s. An alien invasion stands as an allegory for fascism, which in later editions mirrors the military dictatorship.
Perhaps I've already seen too many productions of this kind, see the series The Rain (2018) and War of the Worlds (2019). Because here, too, there is too much corny relationship humanity and entire episodes could have been omitted in my opinion. What's more, the makers don't know exactly which way they want to go with the production. Too serious for entertaining trash, too tame for dark sci-fi.
For narrative reasons, it certainly makes sense sometimes to skip over holes in the logic. But these are sometimes complete cringe-inducing, which makes me look forward to another season.

Eine Familie in der Nähe von Buenos Aires versucht zu überleben, nachdem jegliche Menschen umkommen, die mit dem plötzlich auftauchenden Schnee in Kontakt kommen. Schnell entwickelt sich die Serie laut der üblichen Narrative einer Zombieapokalypse in Anarchie.

Der interessanteste Aspekt ist meiner Meinung nach, dass die Geschichte auf einem argentinischen Comic der 50er Jahre basiert. Eine Alieninvasion steht als Allegorie für den Faschismus, welche in späteren Auflagen die Militärdiktatur spiegelt.
Vielleicht habe ich schon zu viele Produktionen dieser Art gesehen, siehe die Serien The Rain (2018) und Krieg der Welten (2019). Denn auch hier menschelt es mir zu sehr und ganze Folgen hätten meiner Meinung nach weggelassen werden können. Zudem wissen die Macher nicht genau, welchen Weg der Inszenierung sie gehen wollen. Für unterhaltsamen Trash zu ernsthaft, für düstere Sci-Fi zu zahm.
Aus erzählerischen Gründen ist es manchmal sicher sinnvoll, Logiklöcher zu überspringen. Doch sind diese hier manchmal ganze Kratereinschläge, was mir die Freude auf eine weitere Staffel trübt.

Da verschlägt es mich nach einem halben Jahr mal wieder in die Sneak, um das Logo von Alamode aufglimmen zu sehen – und nach der Berlinale – Golden Bear – Binde war mir klar, dass ich mir noch nochmal Drømmer anschauen darf, mit dem ich auf der Berlinale schon träumen durfte. Immerhin besser als nochmal Islands…

Alle Teile haben interessante Aspekte und Figuren, aber Drømmer ist meiner Meinung nach der beste aus der Oslo-Trilogie von Dag Johan Haugerud. Wie ein Streifen warmen Sonnenlichts im Strickpulli eines frostigen Frühlingsmorgens, der einen in der Nase kitzelt.
Interessant war es nun zu beobachten, wie das Publikum reagiert. Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, wie sehr Haugerud die Stränge aus der unzuverlässigen Erzählung aus dem Off und der Dialoge der anderen Figuren mit der Stricknadel immer so in eine Sackgasse laufen lässt und wieder in die Schlaufe zurückführt, dass ein Geraune durch die Kinoreihen geht, wenn nordisch unaufgeregt Begriffe wie „Missbrauch“ fallen. Nur um es im nächsten Augenblick aus einer anderen Perspektive aufzulösen.

Mit seinen großartigen Darstellerinnen, seinem subtilen Humor und dem verträumten Soundtrack (Motzfelsgate) konnte mich der Film auch beim zweiten mal überzeugen. Es ist ein Film der Narration und feinen Dialoge, jegliche Eskalation wird entgegen der Erwartungen gelöst. In diesem Beitrag gibt es durchweg eine weibliche Perspektive auf Themen wie erste Liebe, Beziehung, Sex und Selbstfindung, da männliche Figuren bis auf wenige Ausnahmen keine Rolle spielen und auch niemand danach fragt.

After half a year, I'm back in the sneak to see the Alamode logo glow - and after the Berlinale - Golden Bear tie, it was clear to me that I could watch Drømmer again, with which I was already allowed to dream at the Berlinale. At least it's better than Islands again...

All the parts have interesting aspects and characters, but in my opinion Drømmer is the best of the Oslo Trilogy by Dag Johan Haugerud. Like a strip of warm sunlight in a knitted sweater on a frosty spring morning that tickles your nose.
It was interesting to see how the audience reacted. I noticed how Haugerud always lets the strands from the unreliable off-screen narration and the dialogs of the other characters with the knitting needle run into a dead end and back into the loop in such a way that a murmur goes through the rows of the cinema when like “abuse” are used in a Nordic, unexcited way. Only to resolve it the next moment from a different perspective.

With its great actresses, subtle humor and dreamy soundtrack (Motzfelsgate), the film was able to convince me the second time around as well. It is a movie of narration and fine dialog, any escalation is resolved contrary to expectations. In this film, there is a consistently female perspective on topics such as first love, relationships, sex and self-discovery, as male characters, with a few exceptions, play no role and no one asks for them.

Präzise komponiert sind die Szenen in kalten Farben und minimalistischen Proberäumen für die angehenden Models. In einer postindustriellen Vorstadt Litauens wirken die bunten Outfits der Mädchen als Kontrast, wie reingephotoshopt – GNTM lässt grüßen. Aus der Zeit gefallen erinnern die Orte an einen Lost Place, die Mädchen wollen allerdings in der Zukunft leben.
Um dem zu entkommen und die Welt zu bereisen, sind die Teenager Marija und Kristina bereit und besuchen eine teure Modelschule. Die Konkurrenz ist groß, die Mittel zum gegenseitigen Ausstechen ebenso. Körper und Gesundheit werden auf die Probe gestellt.

In dieser Mischung aus Body-Horror und Post-Soviet-Drama¹ gibt es eine große Ambivalenz in der Darstellung von Körpern. Marija selbst wird als hinkender Schlacks beschrieben. Es fließen auch Tableaus als Zwischenszenen mit ein, z. B. Tanzszenen vom Vater mit seiner Freundin oder den Models in einer Choreographie. Viele Weitwinkel-Einstellungen sorgen für das konstant beklemmende Gefühl während des Schauens. Ich fühle starke Bandwurm-Vibes, der Film würde ein gutes Double Feature mit The Ugly Stepsister abgeben. Die Hauptdarstellerinnen Vesta Matulytė und Ieva Rupeikaitė spielen als Amateure erfrischend gut und gehen teilweise selbst an ihre körperlichen Grenzen.

Alle Figuren haben hier ihre Schattenseiten. Die jungen Mädchen verlieren jegliche Skrupel, anderen oder sich selbst zu schaden, um dem erwarteten Bild zu entsprechen und weiterzukommen. Die Männer und Jungs geben auch kein gutes Bild ab. Der Vater von Kristina ist bemüht, aber schlussendlich erfolglos und am Ort gefangen. Motivation gegen Realitätscheck: Die Modelagentin agiert zwischen Aufbau des Selbstbewusstseins der Mädchen und dem toxischen Abmagern. Zudem ist es ein Ausnutzen der Leichtgläubigkeit und der Träume der Mädchen, um an das Geld der Eltern heranzukommen.

Baltisches Kino scheint voll im Kommen zu sein. Nachdem der lettische Film Flow viele Leute verzaubert und einen Oscar abgreift, nach meinem persönlichen Liebling Slow (und weiteren²), gewinnt Saulė Bliuvaitė (sprich: Sa-u-le) für ihr Langfilm-Debüt den Hauptpreis in Locarno. Wenn da mal nicht eine neue Welle im Anrauschen ist.
Zum Beginn des Kinostarts in Deutschland ist Regisseurin Bliuvaitė nebst litauischen Botschafter im Kino zu Gast. Im Q&A erzählt sie, dass der Originaltitel Akiplėša mehrere Bedeutungen hat und so etwas wie „Offensichtlich / Augenöffner / Unverschämt / Dreckschleuder“ vereint. Und ich dachte immer, die deutsche Sprache ist ganz vorne bei diesen unübersetzbaren Doppelbedeutungen dabei.
Inspiration kommt von Fotografie in White-Trash-Ästhetik und der Dokumentation Girl Model (2011). Die Szenen mit der Mutter von Marija wurden auch gedreht. Um das Symbol der Abwesenheit zu verstärken, wurden diese beim Schnitt weggelassen und nur ihre Stimme aus dem Hintergrund verwendet. Ursprünglich hatte Bliuvaitė geplant, die Geschichte auf Grundlage ihrer eigenen Erfahrungen über die Vergangenheit erzählen zu lassen. The scenes are precisely composed in cold colors and minimalist rehearsal rooms for the aspiring models. In a post-industrial Lithuanian suburb, the girls' colorful outfits seem to have been photoshopped in as a contrast - Next Topmodel sends its regards. The locations are reminiscent of a lost place out of time, but the girls want to live in the future.
To escape this and travel the world, teenagers Marija and Kristina are ready and attend an expensive modeling school. The competition is fierce, as are the means to outdo each other. Their bodies and health are put to the test.

In this mixture of body horror and post-Soviet drama¹, there is great ambivalence in the portrayal of bodies. Marija herself is described as a limping slag. There are also tableaux as interludes, e.g. dance scenes of the father with his girlfriend or the models in a choreography. Many wide-angle shots create a constantly oppressive feeling while watching. I feel strong tapeworm vibes, the movie would make a good double feature with The Ugly Stepsister. The lead actresses Vesta Matulytė and Ieva Rupeikaitė play refreshingly well as amateurs and sometimes push themselves to their physical limits.

All the characters here have their dark sides. The young girls lose all scruples about harming others or themselves in order to conform to the expected image and get ahead. The men and boys don't present a good picture either. Kristina's father tries hard but is ultimately unsuccessful and trapped in place. Motivation versus reality check: The modeling agent acts between building up the girls' self-confidence and toxic slimming. It is also an exploitation of the girls' gullibility and dreams in order to get their parents' money.

Baltic cinema seems to be on the rise. After the Latvian film Flow enchanted many people and picked up an Oscar, following my personal favorite Slow (and others²), Saulė Bliuvaitė won the main prize in Locarno for her feature film debut. If there isn't a new wave in the making.
To mark the start of the film's release in , director Bliuvaitė and the Lithuanian ambassador are guests at the cinema. In the Q&A, she explains that the original title Akiplėša has several meanings and combines something like “Obvious / Eye-opener / Shameless / Dirt-slinger”. And I always thought the German language was at the forefront of these untranslatable double meanings.

Oft wird die Frage gestellt, warum der Osten so tickt, wie er tickt. Die Antworten auf Radikalisierung sind komplex, und doch versuchen viele Literaten und Filmemacher:innen es auf eine einfache Formel herunterzubrechen. Und vielleicht ist es das auch, denn in den 2000ern in Sachsen im provinziellen Arbeitermilieu aufzuwachsen, mag gewiss kein Zuckerschlecken gewesen sein. Bis heute hat sich das vermutlich nicht geändert.

Zwischen Hoyerswerda und Bautzen leben die Brüder Philipp und Tobi. Mutti hat eine halbwegs stabile Anstellung als Krankenschwester, Vati ist auf dem Bau und werkelt am selbst errichteten Heim. Arbeitslosigkeit, Alkoholismus und Resignation machen sich breit und der Wendeschock ist auch nicht allzu lange her. Die Dauerbaustelle als Sinnbild für ein unfertiges Leben, Stulle vor dem Fernseher als Abendessen muss reichen. Hakenkreuzschmierereien in der Schule lassen alle nur mit den Schultern zucken, der Einfluss durch Nazis zieht sich durch die Generationen. Wer bleibt und wer flieht woanders hin? Ist es ein Aufgeben oder eine nachvollziehbare Konsequenz? Von Hass und Rassismus vergiftet, bringt ein Flüchtlingsheim die Saat zum Überkochen.

Regisseurin Constanze Klaue versteht es, den Figuren trotz der negativen Vibes mit Empathie zu begegnen. So richtig hört sich hier eigentlich keiner zu. Die Dialoge sind pointiert und erzählen lückenhaft das Notwendigste. Durch hervorragenden Schnitt und Montage füllen sich die Zwischenräume mit Leben. Manche Aussagen offenbaren mehr, als andere in ganzen Trilogien zu erzählen wissen.
Der Cast gefällt mir sehr gut, das Spiel authentisch mit diesem weichen Dialekt zwischen Sächsisch und Brandenburgisch – man erinnere sich an Gundermann. Auch der Zeitsprung und die Immersion der Alterung von den Figuren sind ziemlich gut gelungen. Das fällt mir sonst oft negativ auf.

The question is often asked why East ticks the way it does. The answers to radicalization are complex, and yet many writers and filmmakers try to break it down to a simple formula. And perhaps it is, because growing up in a provincial working-class environment in Saxony in the 2000s was certainly no walk in the park. That probably hasn't changed to this day.

The brothers Philipp and Tobi live between Hoyerswerda and Bautzen. Mom has a reasonably stable job as a nurse, Dad works in construction and builds his own home. Unemployment, alcoholism and resignation take hold, and it's not all that long since the Wende shock. The permanent building site as a symbol of an unfinished life, sandwiches in front of the TV as dinner will have to do. Swastika smearings at school make everyone just shrug their shoulders, the influence of Nazis runs through the generations. Who stays and who flees elsewhere? Is it giving up or an understandable consequence? Poisoned by hatred and racism, a refugee home causes the seeds to boil over.

Director Constanze Klaue knows how to treat the characters with empathy despite the negative vibes. Nobody really listens to each other here. The dialog is pointed and tells the bare essentials in a fragmentary way. Excellent editing and montage fill the spaces in between with life. Some statements reveal more than others know how to tell in entire trilogies.
I like the cast very much, the acting is authentic with this soft dialect between Saxon and Brandenburg - Gundermann. The time jump and the immersion of the ageing of the characters are also quite well done. I often notice this in a negative way.

Zart und offen sind die Geschichten von Dag Johan Haugerud, die Figuren ehrlich und schwelgend in einer Art Alltagspoesie. Die unaufdringliche Musikuntermalung mit schmelzendem Posaunen-Blues und Synths rückt Bilder von Oslo wie eine Art Hauptdarsteller in den Fokus.

Als Abschluss seiner Trilogie Oslo Stories ist der Beitrag Liebe (Kjærlighet) zu verstehen, welcher die ersten beiden Sehnsucht (Sex) und Träume (Drømmer) zusammenführt. In allen Filmen geht es um Beziehungen, Sex und gesellschaftliche Erwartungen. Im Prinzip können alle Filme unabhängig voneinander in einer beliebigen Reihenfolge angesehen werden, da die Geschichten und Personen nicht zusammenhängen. Eher durch Zufall kam ich in den Genuss, die drei Filme in der von Haugerud präfierten Reihenfolge der Veröffentlichung zu sehen: Sehnsucht letztes Jahr auf der Berlinale, Träume dieses Jahr auf der Berlinale (mit Hauptpreis) und Liebe (lief letztes Jahr in Venedig) nun zum regulären Kinostart in Deutschland. Merkwürdigerweise hat sich der deutsche Verleih Alamode dazu entschieden, den Abschluss mit dem Beginn zu vertauschen, also im April und Mai erst Liebe (der mit der Uro), dann Träume (der mit der Lehrerin) und zuletzt Sehnsucht (der mit den Schornsteinfegern). Offenbar traut dieser letzterem Film nicht zu, so zu verfangen, dass irgendjemand sich noch die anderen Filme anschauen möchte.

Gefahren wird so viel in der Osloer Bucht, dass ein Fähren-Grindr zu spontanen Sex-Abenteuern einlädt. Auf dem Osloer Rathaus wird über Feminismus philosophiert und Patienten geholfen. Im Krankenhaus arbeitet Marianne als Uro und lässt sich von ihrer Freundin Heidi mit dem Geologen Ole verkuppeln. Eigentlich hält Marianne nichts von normalen Beziehungen, von der Ehe noch weniger. Ähnlich wie ihr Kollege, der schwule Pfleger Tor, der flüchtigen Männerbekanntschaften zugeneigt ist. Als er einen Patienten mit Prostatakrebs wiedererkennt, bietet er seine Hilfe im Alltag an.
Durch die Schnitte wandeln auch Geschichten über sexuelle Erwartungen, Männer- und Frauengesundheit. Das Körperliche beeinträchtigt das Mentale und umgekehrt.

Es liegt nicht fern, beim Titel Liebe die verschiedenen Arten hiervon wiederzufinden:
Die Beamtin Heidi steht für die spirituelle Liebe. Die Figuren am Rathaus bekommen von ihr alle eine Interpretation in Sachen Toleranz. Ich glaube, das Osloer Rathaus habe ich nie in erhabenerem Licht gesehen, vor Ort fand ich es ziemlich öde.
Marianne symbolisiert die sinnlich-sexuelle Liebe, mit Ole kommt es nur zu einem One-Night-Stand. Sobald es komplizierter wird und Bindungsängste triggert, ist sie auch schon wieder weg. Apropos Ole: Ich meine, dass er stellvertretend für die Liebe zu Kindern/Familie und Beruf(ung) eintritt.
Und dann ist da Tor, bei dem das am wenigsten erwartet wird und fern von kurzfristigem Spaß einem Menschen hilft. Also sehen wir durch ihn hindurch die Nächstenliebe und vielleicht sogar Selbstliebe aufleuchten.

Dag Johan Haugerud's stories are tender and open, the characters honest and indulging in a kind of everyday poetry. The unobtrusive background music with melting trombone blues and synths brings images of Oslo into focus like a kind of leading actor.

The contribution Love (Kjærlighet), which brings together the first two Sex and Dreams Sex Love (Drømmer), is to be seen as the conclusion of his trilogy Oslo Stories. All the films deal with relationships, sex and social expectations. In principle, all the films can be watched independently of each other in any order, as the stories and characters are not connected. Rather by chance, I had the pleasure of seeing the three films in the order in which Haugerud prefaced their release: Sex last year at the Berlinale, Dreams Sex Love this year at the Berlinale (with the main prize) and Love (screened last year in Venice) now for its regular theatrical release in . Strangely enough, the German distributor Alamode has decided to swap the end with the beginning, so in April and May first Love (the one with the urologist), then Dreams Sex Love (the one with the teacher) and finally Sex (the one with the chimney sweeps). Obviously, the latter film doesn't have the confidence to be so catchy that anyone would want to watch the other films.

There is so much traffic in the Bay of Oslo that a ferry grindr invites you to spontaneous sex adventures. At Oslo City Hall, people philosophize about feminism and help patients. At the hospital, Marianne works as a urologist and lets her friend Heidi set her up with the geologist Ole. Marianne doesn't really think much of normal relationships, and even less of marriage. Just like her colleague, the gay nurse Tor, who is inclined towards fleeting male acquaintances. When he recognizes a patient with prostate cancer, he offers his help in everyday life.
Stories about sexual expectations, men's and women's health also wend their way through the cuts. The physical affects the mental and vice versa.

It is not far-fetched to find the different types of love in the title Love:
The civil servant Heidi stands for spiritual love. The figures at the town hall all get an interpretation of tolerance from her. I don't think I've ever seen Oslo City Hall in a more sublime light; I found it rather dull when I was there.
Marianne symbolizes sensual-sexual love, with Ole it only comes to a one-night stand. As soon as it gets more complicated and triggers fears of commitment, she's gone again. Speaking of Ole: I think he represents love for children/family and vocation.
And then there's Tor, who is least expected to do that and, far from having short-term fun, helps a person. So we see charity and perhaps even self-love shining through him.

In Wiesenwalde, so wird es erzählt, wurde der Komponist Telemann auf einer Reise wie durch ein Wunder durch das Wasser aus dem Brunnen von einer Krankheit geheilt. Ansonsten ist in dem Dorf im Oderbruch nie etwas los, alle warten hier auf ihr eigenes Wunder. Nur jetzt gerade, da herrscht Krieg in Wiesenwalde. Also nicht wirklich, Hollywood dreht hier eine Serie zur Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Und wenn der Weltkrieg nach Wiesenwalde kommt, dann müssen die Bewohner:innen anpacken. Denn Statisten, Beherbergung und Fahrdienste sorgen für Beschäftigung. Und dann ist da noch ein Panzer auf dem Grundstück, dem sich die Bürgermeisterin annimmt und der vom Filmteam abgeholt wird. Ganz bestimmt bald. Strom gibt es sicher auch bald wieder in Wiesenwalde. Nur jetzt gerade nicht, denn der wird für den Dreh gebraucht.

Die skurrile Provinzkomödie ist ein Ensemblefilm über die verschiedenen Personen im Nest. Jede Figur schleppt ihren eigenen Ballast mit sich und träumt von Großem. Dagebliebene und Zurückgekehrte versprechen sich von der Traumfabrik den großen Aufschwung. Widersprüche zwischen Autorennspiel und Chauffeur-Job, genauso wie die große Story für die Presse, geben der Geschichte den Rahmen. Interessant ist es, dass das Filmgelände nur abstrakt aus der Ferne mit hochgefahrenem Mond und Artilleriefeuer vorkommt. Sicher auch aus Budgetgründen legt das den Fokus auf die Charaktere im Dorf und zeigt, dass die Gemeinde selbst nur wenig von der Produktion profitiert.

Der Humor setzt sich von dem typischen Klamauk deutscher Komödien ab. Wehmütig und morbide trifft es eher. Unend ist es meiner Meinung nach, fast durchweg alle Personen mit schlechtem Englisch agieren zu lassen. Das hätte mal eine Pointe sein können, trägt aber nicht über längere agen des Films und wirkt auch ziemlich respektlos für die Figurenzeichnung und Charakterisierung eines Landstrichs. Auch sind die Akteure nicht ausgereift genug geschrieben. Bei einigen fehlt weiterer Hintergrund, um die Handlungen zu verstehen. Andere machen keine Entwicklung durch und aufkeimende Familiengeschichten werden einfach im Telemann-Brunnen liegen gelassen.

Danach war Regisseur Jannis Alexander Kiefer im Kino zum Q&A zu Gast. Er hat selber in Babelsberg und Rüdersdorf als Komparsen-Betreuer gearbeitet. Es gibt erstaunlich viele Kriegsfilme, die dort von Hollywood gedreht werden. Deshalb hat es sich ergeben, dass er das in seinem Abschlussfilm in einer Art Karikatur thematisiert. Das Dorf Wiesenwalde und die Telemann-Geschichte mit dem Brunnen sind erfunden. Er hat nach etwas Identitätsstiftendem gesucht, auch der Score, basierend auf Musik von Telemann, begleitet den Film. Die Ereignisse sieht er nicht als Magischen Realismus, sondern mehr als Märchen. Das Setdesign von Hän und Räumen ist authentisch, Zimmer und Hä sind so bei der Suche gefunden und verwendet worden.

In Wiesenwalde, the story goes, the composer Telemann was miraculously cured of an illness by the water from the well during a journey. Otherwise there is never anything going on in the village in the Oderbruch; everyone here is waiting for their own miracle. Except right now, there's a war going on in Wiesenwalde. Well, not really, Hollywood is filming a series here during the Second World War. And when the world war comes to Wiesenwalde, the residents have to lend a hand. Because extras, accommodation and driving services keep them busy. And then there's a tank on the property, which the mayor takes care of and which is picked up by the film crew. Definitely soon. Electricity will certainly be back in Wiesenwalde soon. Just not right now, because it's needed for the shoot.

This quirky provincial comedy is an ensemble film about the various characters in the nest. Each character carries their own baggage and dreams of great things. Those who have stayed behind and those who have returned promise themselves a big boom from the dream factory. Contradictions between the car racing game and the chauffeur job, as well as the big story for the press, provide the framework for the story. It is interesting to note that the film set only appears abstractly from a distance with the moon raised and artillery fire. No doubt also for budget reasons, this puts the focus on the characters in the village and shows that the community itself benefits little from the production.

The humor differs from the typical slapstick of German comedies. Wistful and morbid is more like it. In my opinion, it is inappropriate to have almost all the characters speak bad English. This could have been a punchline, but it doesn't carry over longer ages of the film and also seems rather disrespectful for the characterization of a region. The actors are also not written maturely enough. Some lack further background to understand their actions. Others don't undergo any development and burgeoning family stories are simply left in the Telemann fountain.

Afterwards, director Jannis Alexander Kiefer was a guest at the cinema for a Q&A. He himself worked in Babelsberg and Rüdersdorf as an extras supervisor. There are an astonishing number of war films that are shot there by Hollywood. That's why he chose to address this in a kind of caricature in his graduation film. The village of Wiesenwalde and the Telemann story with the fountain are made up. He was looking for something to create an identity, and the score, based on music by Telemann, also accompanies the film. He does not see the events as magical realism, but more as a fairy tale. The set design of houses and rooms is authentic, rooms and houses were found and used during the search.

Nevertheless, at some point I don't really care about the different storylines of the individual versions of the characters. The overacting of some of them doesn't help either. It fits in with the humorous realization, but is annoying from time to time.
It's only here that I notice that the same stuck-on “frontal lobe sensor” runs through the episodes this season. It's great to see it carried through thematically and in such detail in this form.

Das t zur humoresken Umsetzung, nervt aber immer wieder mal.
Erst hier fällt mir auf, dass sich in dieser Staffel immer derselbe angeklebte „Stirnlappen-Sensor“ durch die Folgen zieht. Grandios, das thematisch und in solchen Details in dieser Form durchzuziehen.

One of those ideas where you think current technology doesn't seem too far off. Paul Giamatti's good acting enhances the episode in many ways.
The narrative arc of never seeing the ex's face is well set, but unfortunately it's pretty implausible that the main character doesn't it, even though they're supposed to have experienced so much together. I find it quite predictable, I quickly realized that the AI character is not some random virtual representation. Nevertheless, technically and emotionally well staged and told.

Finde es ziemlich vorhersehbar, mir ist schnell klar, dass die KI-Figur nicht irgendeine zufällige virtuelle Darstellung ist. Trotzdem technisch und emotional gut inszeniert und erzählt.

While watching it soon occurred to me that this will probably be the least popular episode of this season, although I hadn't seen them all yet. For various reasons, gender PoC issues will put some off, the film industry's self-reference to itself is nothing original anymore.
And yet I think this episode is terrific, the independence of the AI is solved in an interesting way. Even if the frame plot of the actors in the studio is pretty uninteresting. Mixed with the idea of whether actors merge with their characters themselves and how a cinematic dream world seems more desirable as escapism than the ungrateful real world. A truly thought-provoking essay for cineastes.

At the start of the seventh season, perhaps the most Black Mirror-ish episode imaginable, as many of the core themes are united. Unfortunately, it's very predictable that it's aimed at increasing tariffs and dependence on the (monopolistic) provider.
The idea of advertising seems entirely realistic and is already happening in all kinds of places. It is interesting that the option of simply letting the tariff “expire” with the final decision was left out at the end. It would have been interesting to see whether the company would not let the people die if they weren't paid, but would instead use them permanently as a computing network. Although, people still have to eat.

Interessant wäre noch gewesen, ob der Konzern die Menschen bei ausbleibender Bezahlung nicht sterben lassen würde, sondern dauerhaft als Rechen-Netz zu verwenden wüsste. Obwohl, essen müssen die Leute ja trotzdem.

Mittlerweile ist es schwer, sich aus der Masse der „Jugendfilme über ein Ausbrechen der Strukturen in der DDR“ abzuheben. In einem Land, das es nicht mehr gibt mit Fokus auf die Modewelt und eine Frauenzeitschrift, die es nicht mehr gibt - gelingt das meiner Meinung nach in einigen Aspekten ziemlich gut, in anderen ist es konventionell erzählter Vergangenheitsbewältigungskitsch.

Für die 18-jährige Suzie liegt das Studium in weiter Ferne. Wegen des Orwell-Klassikers „1984“ wird sie zur Arbeit im Kabelwerk verdonnert. In der Straßenbahn wird sie zufällig fotografiert und gelangt so in die „Sibylle“. Im Underground der alternativen Szene schließt sie Bekanntschaften und eine Karriere als Model bahnt sich an.
Der Eskapismus der Modepunks vor den starren Strukturen der Gesellschaft hat natürlich etwas, das Suzie magisch anzieht. Es zeigt auch filmisch eine ganz andere Seite, wie sie sonst im Mainstream vorkommt. Die graue DDR mal bunt und avantgardistisch. Trotzdem sitzt die Staatssicherheit immer im Nacken. Wem kann vertraut werden, wem nicht?

Auch historisch ist es ein interessanter Move, Modeschauen und Produktion für das westliche Ausland in den Vordergrund zu stellen. Die DDR nicht nur als Billiglohnland, sondern als Fashion-Kreativkessel und Hort der anspruchsvollen Ästhetik in der „Sibylle“. Gut finde ich die ehrliche Darstellung der Arbeiterinnen im Werk, die eine harte Schale in ihrer Resignation vermitteln, aber mit einem empathischen Kern strahlen dürfen.
Leider ist es mir zwischendrin zu bieder gefällig, die Rosamunde-Pilcher-Vibes mit der Fotografen-Flamme sind so fade wie farblos. Da bringt auch die Straßenbahnlinie durch den Wald nichts, muss in Köpenick bei Schmöckwitz sein. Auch die Figur und Nebenerzählung der jüngeren Schwester „tut nichts für den Plot“.

Hauptdarstellerin Marlene Burow entwicklet sich offenbar in den letzten Jahren zum It-Girl für „junge Erwachsene zum Ende / nach der Wende bricht aus dem biederen System aus“. Beste Nebenrolle ist definitiv Jördis Triebel als flapsige Vorarbeiterin Gisela im Kabelwerk. Von mir aus hätte die Hälfte des Films von ihr handeln dürfen. Auch Claudia Michelsen als Modezarin der DDR und Sabin Tambrea als schwuler Modedesigner (den es per Definition der offiziellen DDR-Statuten nicht geben dürfte) überzeugen in ihren Rollen.

It is also an interesting historical move to focus on fashion shows and production for Western countries. The GDR not only as a low-wage country, but also as a creative fashion cauldron and a haven of sophisticated aesthetics in the “Sibylle”. I like the honest portrayal of the female workers in the factory, who convey a hard shell in their resignation, but are allowed to shine with an empathetic core.
Unfortunately, it is too blandly pleasing for me in between, the Rosamunde Pilcher vibes with the photographer's flame are as bland as they are colorless. The streetcar line through the forest doesn't help either, it has to be in Köpenick near Schmöckwitz. The character and secondary narrative of the younger sister also “does nothing for the plot”.

Leading actress Marlene Burow has apparently developed into the “it girl for young adults at the end / after the fall of the Berlin Wall, breaking out of the staid system” in recent years. The best ing role is definitely played by Jördis Triebel as Gisela, the flippant forewoman at the cable factory. As far as I'm concerned, half the movie could have been about her. Claudia Michelsen as a GDR fashion czarina and Sabin Tambrea as a gay fashion designer (who should not exist by definition of the official GDR statutes) are also convincing in their roles.

Social study and coming-of-age of siblings Johnny and Jashaun, who live on the “Wounded Knee” reservation in South Dakota. When their father dies in a fire, Johnny wants to move to LA with his girlfriend Aurelia.

Chloé Zhao already focuses on social outsiders in her feature film debut. In this mix of documentary and fiction by non-professional actors, there seems to be no hope for the future for the people on the reservation. After high school, most of them want to become cowboys and Jashaun dreams of a dress for the powwow.
Alcoholism is so rampant that the community severely restricts the sale of alcohol. Johnny deals with others in a thriving black market and violence is the order of the day. His brother is in prison and accuses his mother of not looking after her children.

Away from ethnic kitsch, Zhao authentically describes life on the reservation between resignation and family cohesion. It reminds me of the novels by Sherman Alexie, who tells the story of his community in an unsparing and blackly humorous way.

Alkoholismus ist so stark verbreitet, dass die Gemeinde den Verkauf von Alkohol stark einschränkt. Johnny dealt mit anderen in einem blühenden Schwarzmarkt, Gewalt ist an der Tagesordnung. Sein Bruder sitzt im Gefängnis und wirft der Mutter vor, sich nicht um ihre Kinder zu kümmern.

Abseits von Ethno-Kitsch beschreibt Zhao authentisch das Leben im Reservat zwischen Resignation und familiärem Zusammenhalt. Erinnert mich an die Romane von Sherman Alexie, der schonungslos und schwarzhumorig von seiner Community erzählt.

Fatal infiziert eine Beziehungskonstellation die Gefühle, wenn unterschiedliche Beweggründe die Wünsche antreiben. Es prallen entgegengesetzte Welten aufeinander: Militärischer Drill gegen Klavier-Etüde, Motocross vs. Porsche, schneller Fick neben tiefer Zuneigung, Durchhalteparolen contra Rationalität.
Stürmisch ist das Kennenlernen beim Bowling. Bundeswehrsoldat Isaac und die gelähmte Edith freunden sich an. Ihre Begeisterung für heiße Motocross-Räder schweißt zusammen und bald ist Isaac oft zu Gast in der Villa bei der Familie. Eine Therapie verspricht Hoffnung, doch wie weit ist jeder bereit zu gehen?

Lauro Cress wagt sich an eine moderne Interpretation von Stefan Zweigs Roman Ungeduld des Herzens. Damit ist auch klar, warum die Konstellation von Anfang an merkwürdig literarisch konstruiert erscheint.
Auf der einen Seite Isaac, gut gespielt von Giulio Brizzi, auf der Suche nach Anerkennung und dem Sonnenbad in der wohlhabenden Familie. Eine ganz andere Welt als die Partys seiner Kumpel:inen beim Bund. Auch ist er auf der Suche nach seiner verlorenen Kindheit ohne Vater, aber daraus wird erstaunlich wenig gemacht.
Die Figur der Edith, die sich in Isaac verliebt, hat etwas mehr Tiefe und wird phänomenal von Ladina von Frisching dargestellt. Sie ist schnippisch, willensstark und gleichwohl tief verletzlich. Bedürfnisse, Launen und Widersprüche von Edith nach ihrem Unfall sind so facettenreich beschrieben.

Bildästhetik und Kameraführung sind gut, leider sind die Set-Pieces lieblos, z. B. die Villa. Gefühlt gibt es viele skurril-witzige Momente, vielleicht aber nicht immer im positiven Sinne. Liegt es an der mitunter merkwürdigen Montage und den hölzernen Dialogen?
Es gibt einige lehrreiche Aspekte zu Ableismus in bewusster und unbewusster Form. Wäre interessant, wie das Betroffene beurteilen.

Getting to know each other while bowling is stormy. German army soldier Isaac and paralyzed Edith become friends. Their enthusiasm for hot motocross bikes brings them closer together and soon Isaac is often a guest at the family's villa. Therapy promises hope, but how far is everyone prepared to go?

Lauro Cress ventures a modern interpretation of Stefan Zweig's novel Impatience of the Heart. This also makes it clear why the constellation seems strangely literary from the outset.
On the one hand, Isaac, well played by Giulio Brizzi, in search of recognition and sunbathing with his wealthy family. A completely different world to the parties of his buddies at the army. He is also searching for his lost childhood without a father, but surprisingly little is made of this.
The character of Edith, who falls in love with Isaac, has a little more depth and is played phenomenally by Ladina von Frisching. She is snappish, strong-willed and at the same time deeply vulnerable. Edith's needs, moods and contradictions after her accident are described in such a multifaceted way.

The visual aesthetics and camera work are good, but unfortunately the set-pieces are loveless, e.g. the villa. It feels like there are many bizarre and funny moments, but perhaps not always in a positive sense. Is it because of the sometimes strange editing and the wooden dialog?
There are some instructive aspects to Ableism in conscious and unconscious form. It would be interesting to hear what those affected think.

The coming-of-age of 12-year-old Bailey, who lives in a British industrial town on the coast with her erratic, petty criminal father. When she meets the sensitive Bird one day, his presence casts a spell over her.

A lost childhood as an escape into a magical parallel world. And yet Andrea Arnold's world is not kitschy, but serious and dangerous. Where the system fails, only vigilante justice from a gang of youths who take revenge on violent men can help.
It is interesting to observe how Arnold borrows motifs from her other works. As in the short film Wasp, the milieu study is shot almost entirely with a dynamic hand-held camera. The industrial working-class district of a small town and the road over a highway bridge also appear here. Her style from the documentary Cow also makes a guest appearance, with the warm breath of the animals played out in close-ups of horses in the pasture. The flattering montage of images and sounds of nature and animals reminds me of Geographies of Solitude. Arnold doesn't shy away from the harsh tones of the small-town proletariat, but still gives them homage, sympathy and a positive view of life.

Nykiya Adams plays Bailey, whose adolescent insecurity and anger are both palpable. Franz Rogowski's portrayal of Bird is fascinating, somewhere between a stranger to life who lives in the here and now. And with a fragile melancholy, as an expression of the search for his untraceable life. It's also interesting to see Barry Keoghan as a fucked-up small-time dealer with lots of tattoos.
It soon becomes clear that Bird is not just any old name. All along, the parallel to birds in flight can be seen as a metaphor for freedom, playing with magical realism and mythical creatures. Like a protective angel, he waits on the roof and watches over Bailey. A longing for strength against the hardships of life and a mythical protective armor.

Coming-of-Age der 12-jährigen Bailey, die in einer britischen Industriestadt an der Küste bei ihrem sprunghaft-kleinkriminellen Vater lebt. Als sie eines Tages den sensiblen Bird trifft, wird sie durch seine Anwesenheit im Bann gehalten.

Eine verlorene Kindheit als Flucht in eine magische Parallelwelt. Und doch ist diese bei Andrea Arnold nicht kitschig, sondern durchaus ernst und gefährlich. Wo das System versagt, hilft nur Selbstjustiz von einer Jugendgang, welche sich an gewalttätigen Männern rächt.
Es ist interessant zu beobachten, wie Arnold Motive an ihre anderen Werke anlehnt. Die Milieustudie ist wie im Kurzfilm Wespen fast durchgehend mit dynamischer Handkamera gedreht. Auch das industrielle Arbeiterviertel einer Kleinstadt und die Straße über eine Autobahnbrücke kommen hier vor. Ein Gastspiel auch ihr Stil aus dem Dokumentarfilm Cow, deren warmer Atem der Tiere in Nahaufnahme bei Pferden auf der Weide ausgespielt wird. Die schmeichelhafte Montage in Bild und Ton von Natur- und Tieraufnahmen erinnert mich an Geographies of Solitude. Arnold schreckt nicht vor den harten Tönen des Kleinstadt-Proletariats zurück, aber gibt ihnen trotzdem huldigende Sympathie und einen positiven Blick aufs Leben.

Facettenreich stark spielt Nykiya Adams die Bailey, deren adoleszente Verunsicherung und gleichwohl Wut zu spüren sind. Franz Rogowski stellt den Bird faszinierend dar, zwischen Lebensfremden, der im Hier und Jetzt lebt. Und mit einer zerbrechlichen Melancholie, als Ausdruck nach der Suche seines unauffindbaren Lebens. Interessant ist es auch, Barry Keoghan mal abgefuckt als Kleindealer und jede Menge Tattoos zu sehen.
Dass mit Bird nicht irgendein Name gewählt ist, wird schnell klar. Die ganze Zeit schon ist die Parallele zu Vögeln im Flug als Freiheitsmetapher zu sehen, spielend mit magischem Realismus und Fabelwesen. Wie ein beschützender Engel wartet er auf dem Dach und wacht über Bailey. Eine Sehnsucht nach Kraft vor den Härten des Lebens und einen mythischen Schutzpanzer.

Mit starken Vibes zur griechischen Mythologie erklingt der Schwanengesang als sterbende Hoffnung gegenüber den autoritären Machtstrukturen. Ein belarussisches Kollektiv im polnischen Exil arbeitet sich daran in dieser litauisch-deutschen Produktion in einem No-Budget-Film ab, der den Geist eines experimentellen Studentenfilms atmet und mich an eigene Filmprojekte aus dem Studium erinnert.

Der Mittzwanziger Fedor ist auf einer skurrilen Suche nach seinem Lieblingspulli, von dem er überzeugt, ist, nur in jenem seine poetischen Lieder schreiben zu können. Parallel dazu wird medial der atomare Dritte Weltkrieg heraufbeschworen, welchen er resigniert ignoriert. Trocken amüsant und wehmütig melancholisch zugleich gelingt ein Abgesang auf den Totalitarismus in Belarus. Wenn der Weltuntergang naht, kommt wohl kaum etwas näher heran als slawisch-schwermütige Gitarrenklänge aus dem Underground.
Aus der griechischen Mythologie schöpft auch die Anspielung auf Orpheus in der Unterwelt, in der er zur Rettung singen muss. Angesichts minimaler Mittel entsteht eine originelle Interpretation einer Generation mit kreativen Animationen und folgerichtigem Humor.

With strong vibes of Greek mythology, the swan song resounds as a dying hope in the face of authoritarian power structures. In this Lithuanian-German production, a Belarusian collective in exile in Poland works on this in a no-budget film that breathes the spirit of an experimental student film and reminds me of my own film projects from my studies.

Fedor, in his mid-twenties, is on a bizarre search for his favorite sweater, which he is convinced is the only way he can write his poetic songs. At the same time, the media are conjuring up a nuclear third world war, which he resignedly ignores. Dryly amusing and wistfully melancholy at the same time, this is a swan song to totalitarianism in Belarus. When the end of the world is approaching, hardly anything comes closer than Slavic, melancholy guitar sounds from the underground.
The allusion to Orpheus in the Underworld, in which he has to sing to save himself, also draws on Greek mythology. With minimal resources, the result is an original interpretation of a generation with creative animations and consecutive humor.

Als Hybrid aus Doku und Fiction erzählt Želimir Žilnik im Stil des Sozialen Realismus an der Basis von Werktätigen ein Porträt über Serbien und die historischen Strukturen. Der über 80-jährige Jazzmusiker Stevan kehrt von Wien in seine serbische Heimatstadt zurück, wo ihm die Villa und das Land als Erbe seines Vaters vom Staat zurückgegeben werden, welches vor Jahrzehnten im sozialistischen Jugoslawien enteignet wurde.
Laiendarsteller:innen spielen Personen aus Familie und Bekanntenkreis. Jede Figur steht stellvertretend für einen Standpunkt, welcher gesellschaftliche Erwartungen symbolisiert. Sozialismus, Kapitalismus, Familienstreitigkeiten – Stevans Erbe aktiviert die Besitzgier aller möglicher Leute.
Erinnerungen an vergangene Zeiten sind gut dargestellt, aber immer über die Gegenwart reflektiert. Das gibt der Form etwas Theaterhaftes, kann aber reale Probleme unterhaltsam und geschichtlich trotzdem informativ vermitteln. Žilnik, selbst über 80, zeigt in seinem Film Charaktere und ihre Geschichte, die sich keinem System oder Strukturen anbiedern, sondern Menschen und ihrem Leben einen Raum geben.

A hybrid of documentary and fiction, Želimir Žilnik tells a portrait of Serbia and its historical structures in the style of social realism based on working people. The 80-year-old jazz musician Stevan returns from Vienna to his Serbian hometown, where his father's villa and land, which were expropriated decades ago in socialist Yugoslavia, are returned to him by the state.
Non-professional actors play characters from his family and circle of acquaintances. Each character represents a point of view that symbolizes social expectations. Socialism, capitalism, family disputes - Stevan's legacy activates the greed of all kinds of people.
Memories of times past are well portrayed, but always reflected on the present. This gives the form something theatrical, but can convey real problems in an entertaining yet historically informative way. Žilnik, himself over 80, shows characters and their stories in his film, which does not pander to any system or structure, but gives people and their lives space.

Enigmatisch reihen sich groteske Szenen in unterkühlten Farben aneinander und werfen das Getöse der gescheiterten Paartherapie in das Publikum. Possession weigert sich einfach wie besessen, sich einordnen und erklären zu lassen.
Ein Mann vom Geheimdienst kehrt nach Hause zurück und wird von seiner Frau verlassen, die sich einem spirituellen Philosophen an den Hals wirft. Ein Detektiv soll sie beobachten und der Sohn des Paares bleibt vernachlässigt zuhause zurück.

Andrzej Żuławski entwickelt immer wieder Gedanken hin zu Drama, Krimi, Thriller und Horror, führt den wilden Mix aber nie wirklich zu einem ergiebigen Ende aus. Es geht um eine toxische Beziehung und Vertrauen, aber auch um dämonischen Okkultismus und dystopische Geheimorganisationen.
Die dynamische Inszenierung lebt von der stürmischen Kameraführung und abrupten Schnitten mitten in Dialogen oder dem Geschehen. Das drastische Schauspiel von Isabelle Adjani und Sam Neill schwankt zwischen überzeugendem Wahn und strapaziösem Overacting.

Gut t die Wahl des Ortes Westberlin zu Mauerzeiten und nimmt die surreale und anarchistische Stimmung in leerstehenden Hän am Grenzstreifen in sich auf. Spionage an der Grenze als visuelles Element spiegelt die Beschattung der Frau durch den Mann und auch das zerbrochene Vertrauen zueinander wider.
Wenn man es überhaupt versuchen möchte, ließe sich das Monster als diabolischer Verführer lesen, der die Beziehung vergiftet und auch das Zutrauen in andere Menschen zerstört. Ist aber auch egal, der Psychotrip ist ebenso unbequem wie reizvoll und bietet damit mehr, als es heutige „Content-Werke“ schaffen.

Grotesque scenes are enigmatically strung together in undercooled colors, throwing the din of failed couple therapy into the audience. Possession simply refuses to be categorized and explained.
A man from the secret service returns home and is abandoned by his wife, who throws herself at a spiritual philosopher. A detective is sent to keep an eye on them and the couple's son is left neglected at home.

Andrzej Żuławski repeatedly develops ideas of drama, crime, thriller and horror, but never really brings the wild mix to a productive conclusion. It is about a toxic relationship and trust, but also about demonic occultism and dystopian secret organizations.
The dynamic production thrives on the stormy camera work and abrupt cuts in the middle of dialog or the action. The drastic acting of Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill fluctuates between convincing madness and exhausting overacting.

The choice of West Berlin as a location at the time of the Wall fits well and captures the surreal and anarchic atmosphere in empty houses on the border strip. Espionage at the border as a visual element reflects the shadowing of the woman by the man and also the broken trust in each other.
If you want to try at all, the monster could be read as a diabolical seducer who poisons the relationship and destroys trust in other people. But it doesn't matter, the psycho-trip is as uncomfortable as it is appealing and thus offers more than today's “content works” manage.

Three characters play in a fictional series for children in which their creator also appears. When the creator dies, they are left alone.
It has its very own nostalgic look and a morbid melancholy. Trapped in their movie studio, the characters write to children to get food from them. Reminds me of the forgetting of stories, which also drives the plot in The Neverending Story.

Oscar Shorts 2025 - Animation

How disgusting - people kissing each other. A couple of children from different families on a campsite can't imagine why they do this. The story offers a childlike view of love and intimacy between two people and thus opens up the view of discovering one's own sexuality and sensuality.
The visual trick here is that people who want to kiss get shiny pink lips. This makes for cheerful moments and is enough for the narrative arc of the short film. However, it shouldn't have been any longer.

For a veteran, every new day is a challenge; everything can be both a curse and a blessing. A fable about war traumas that must be symbolically overcome. When a stranded whale lies on the shore next to his house, his daughter takes care of it. The old soldier has to overcome his blockade in order to save the whale, his daughter and, allegorically, himself. Poetic without being kitschy and beautifully animated in a classic cartoon with a very special style of proportions, shapes and aesthetic colors.

Inszeniert mit intensiven Nahaufnahmen von Gesichtern, in denen jede Pore zu sehen ist, erzählt Türker Süer halb Thriller, halb Drama. Der Elektro-Synth-Soundtrack verwandelt die verstaubten Straßen in einen dystopischen Sci-Fi. Militärtypisch sind die Dialoge auf ein Minimum reduziert.

Eine Frage von Befehlskette oder Gewissen – steht einem die Loyalität zum Land näher als die eigene Familie? Ein durchmilitarisierter Staat Türkei, in dem sich die Widersprüche durch die Familien ziehen. Im Hintergrund ist im TV immer wieder der Putsch von Teilen des Militärs zu sehen. Autoritäre Strukturen im Mikrokosmos Militär, die um sich greifen – wem ist noch zu vertrauen, wer hat welche Interessen? Dabei stehen die beiden Brüder als Abbild der Gesellschaft, in der Vertrauen und Menschlichkeit verloren gehen.

Die Hauptdarsteller Ahmet Rifat Sungar und Berk Hakman zeigen ausgezeichnet die brüchige Beziehung der Brüder und sind eines der Highlights hier. Leider wird aus der Hintergrundgeschichte des Vaters, der hochrangiger Militär war, zu wenig gemacht. Hier hätte es gute Thriller-Elemente, genauso wie weiterführende Erklärungen zum Handeln der Personen, geben können.

Staged with intense close-ups of faces in which every pore can be seen, Türker Süer's story is part thriller, part drama. The electro-synth soundtrack transforms the dusty streets into a dystopian sci-fi. In typical military fashion, the dialog is reduced to a minimum.

A question of chain of command or conscience - is loyalty to one's country more important than one's own family? Turkey is a thoroughly militarized state in which contradictions run through families. In the background, the coup by parts of the military can be seen again and again on TV. Authoritarian structures in the military microcosm that are spreading - who can still be trusted, who has what interests? The two brothers represent a society in which trust and humanity are being lost.

The lead actors Ahmet Rifat Sungar and Berk Hakman do an excellent job of portraying the brothers' fragile relationship and are one of the highlights here. Unfortunately, too little is made of the background story of the father, who was a high-ranking military officer. There could have been good thriller elements here, as well as further explanations of the characters' actions.

Die Österreicherin Sarah kommt aus dem Kampfsport und wird beauftragt, mit drei Schwestern einer reichen Familie in Jordanien Martial Arts zu trainieren. Doch in dem Haus ist es schnell merkwürdig repressiv. Die Schwestern haben keinen Kontakt nach außen und immer streunen Aufer durchs Haus.

Kurdwin Ayub inszeniert den Thriller mit einer trockenen Sprödigkeit und einem unterwandernden Understatement. Nie ist so ganz klar, wer Sarah eigentlich tatsächlich ist. Es ist keine Geschichte einer Heldin, vielleicht ist sie sogar eine Antiheldin, die sich unentschlossen durchs Leben ziehen lässt. Auch entspricht sie in keiner Weise dem Bild eines White Saviors, Erwartungen werden immer wieder unterlaufen. Im Ring eine Maschine, im sozialen Umgang geradezu phlegmatisch, sind ihre Gedankengänge in dem dialogarmen Film greifbar und leben von Lücken in der Erzählung, die in einem konsequent zu Ende geführten Finale münden.

Regie und Schnitt sind beachtlich, Wendungen und Höhepunkte kommen plötzlich und treffen wie ein harter, schneller Punch von Sarah. Diese ist überzeugend gespielt von Florentina Holzinger, die gleich die Hauptfigur in ihrer ersten Rolle übernimmt. Und doch ist der Kampf erst vorbei, wenn der goldene Käfig verlassen wird, im Haus oder der Mall genauso wie im MMA. Gut sind auch die Darstellerinnen der Schwestern, Celina Sarhan, Andria Tayeh und Nagham Abu Baker. Jede mit einem eigenen Weg, eine Rolle als verweilender Schatten einzunehmen.
Das Patriarchat der Gesellschaft heruntergebrochen auf despotische Strukturen einer Familie, in denen es den Schwestern finanziell an nichts mangelt. Und doch fehlt zwischen den simulierten Soap-Operas etwas Entscheidendes: Selbstbestimmung in sämtlichen Belangen.

Witzig: Zwischendrin ist selbst „Oida“ im deutschen Untertitel mit „Oida“ übersetzt.

Austrian Sarah comes from a martial arts background and is assigned to train martial arts with three sisters from a wealthy family in Jordan. But the house quickly becomes strangely repressive. The sisters have no with the outside world and watchdogs are always roaming the house.

Kurdwin Ayub directs the thriller with a dry brittleness and an undermining understatement. It is never quite clear who Sarah actually is. It is not a story of a heroine, perhaps she is even an anti-heroine who allows herself to be dragged through life without making up her mind. Nor does she correspond in any way to the image of a White Savior; expectations are repeatedly undermined. A machine in the ring and downright phlegmatic in her social interactions, her train of thought is palpable in this film with little dialog and thrives on gaps in the narrative that lead to a finale that is consistently brought to a close.

The direction and editing are remarkable, twists and climaxes come suddenly and hit like a hard, fast punch from Sarah. She is convincingly played by Florentina Holzinger, who takes on the main character in her first role. And yet the fight is only over when the golden cage is left, in the house or the mall as well as in the MMA. The actresses playing the sisters, Celina Sarhan, Andria Tayeh and Nagham Abu Baker, are also good. Each with their own way of taking on a role as a lingering shadow.
The patriarchy of society is broken down into the despotic structures of a family in which the sisters want for nothing financially. And yet something crucial is missing between the simulated soap operas: Self-determination in all matters.

The dreams of two nurses fall like broken stars on the metropolis of Mumbai, where the city's night light glows in the monsoon rain. In the darkness, no light on earth can banish the shadows from the heart.
The Outrun
Scotland, Saoirse Ronan and Nora Fingscheidt - what more do you need for the peace of mind of an addiction story?
Slow
A shining indie jewel in my list, which conveys communication through intense acting and melancholic imagery.
The Zone of Interest
A horror film of suggestion and a look into the psyche of people who have settled into an inhuman normality by pursuing a career and carrying on.
All of Us Strangers
A lifetime of anxiety tightens into a knot that becomes a shining star in the middle of a starry sky. A sky full of "strangers".
Dying
An episodic film about a family with different perspectives on the subject of “dying”. The cast brings together a top selection of German-speaking actors. Some scenes are among the best to come out of in recent years.
Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World
A radically biting satire on the world of work by Radu Jude. Viewing habits are turned upside down and are sometimes an imposition. Image montages and a mockumentary from one shot never give us an exact idea of what Jude has planned next.
Alien: Romulus
The air shaft closes with a metallic sound and I feel my way into the next room. The tracker shows something right in front of me: I hold my breath in the locker while the creature focuses its senses...
I it it, spun in by the fanservice, the movie makes my heart rejoice.

Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus
The image glides through piano strings and playing hands to a man on a concert stage. His face plays every note, the pieces are sometimes elegiac, sometimes avant-garde and eccentric. An impressive musical portrait of Ryuichi Sakamoto shortly before the end of his life.
Four Daughters
Experimental documentation of a family story influenced by IS. The form is strong as a film in the making, in which mother and daughters act out the events for the actresses. A sisterhood, united in liberality and a perspective on the generations.
Joan Baez: I Am a Noise
Should I ever will have such a career as a folk singer - I would love to have a great biopic about me like this one.
Nice Ladies
When a documentary develops more tension than many feature films. Worth seeing documentary about underrepresented women over 50, relationships, survivors' guilt and alienation in war.
The Investigation
A documentary theater version of the Auschwitz trial from the 1960s, based on the play by Peter Weiss, can be seen in no-frills sobriety. A play worth seeing in a restrained production with a focus on the spoken word.
Stray Bodies
A strong narrative with all facets of life and death: abortion, artificial insemination, euthanasia. Difficult to watch at times, but nevertheless the staging with music, dance and good cinematography creates a movie that stays in your head.
Witches
Elizabeth Sankey spans an arc from the history of women as mutual midwives, the patriarchy's power of interpretation, the “witch burnings” and what this has to do with postpartum depression.
Mediha
Mediha and her brothers were abducted by IS and return to their Yazidi community after their liberation. What makes this film so special is the strongly personal touch and informal view. Mediha and her brothers film, often themselves.
Occupied City
Amsterdam in the present, backed up with descriptions of the places during the occupation by Nazi . Strong effect of the parallel narrative, which juxtaposes the effects of the corona pandemic and environmental protests from our time.
Abode of Dawn
Long-term documentary worth seeing about believers in Siberian villages who live around a mountain with a self-proclaimed saint. With flowing hair and aggressive bliss in his permanent smile, the “teacher” gives many people in a time of over-civilization and the retreat of state structures. But are the people happier here?

A pudding as a symbol of procrastination in a hostile city.
Mothers and Monsters
Expectations of motherhood in surreal images as body horror.
Real
Good realization on a low budget, present and past centuries collide with media rivalry.
Been There
Self-staging as proof for those who stayed at home collides with trails in sensitive moss, graffiti full of tourist hatred and individual vacations in self-deception.
The Silence of 600 Million Results
A concept of the digital about motherhood and social expectations.
Meat Puppet
Horror comedy with a Muppet hand puppet.
Tunnels
Mockumentary about a subway driver on the wrong track, very strong Berlin vibes.

The Empire
Social criticism and working-class romance in the French provinces as a sci-fi fairy tale between zeros and ones. I think Dumont wanted to give the finger in an “old man no longer understands the world” manner.
Rippy
Michael Biehn really doesn't deserve this. As a whimsical outback Schmitty, he warns of a killer kangaroo that hops around looking for victims to claw. Takes himself and his family history far too seriously in the realm of trashy creature horror.
Megalopolis
An astonishing work of art that leaves you shaking your head in disbelief at all the cinematic oddities and references. Apart from a dreamlike future world, there is a lack of concrete ideas as an alternative to criticism.
Arcadia
I can't almost anything. And that basically says it all.
Drive-Away Dolls
A queer action road movie with flat jokes and all kinds of poor craftsmanship in narration, characters, pacing and editing.
La Chimera
“from falsehood, anything follows” - Probably my hot take in the list, but to me it's still a thrown together ‘film school best-of’. With an uninteresting band of robbers and characters that came up short instead.
The Protected Men
The trick of telling the story as a satire is a good one. But the poor staging with bad acting and set design seems inappropriate in the midst of the silliness. And when the movie and its message try to take itself seriously, the bow is already overstretched.
Cuckoo
Atmospheric at the beginning, but quickly falls off due to the overacting and poor pacing and can't even do anything clever with the cuckoo metaphor.
Black Tea
Interesting influences from different cultures, but the story loses itself in its secondary characters and is unable to convey the motives due to inappropriate editing and pacing.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1
Films and planned multi-part films work differently than a series format. Kostner tries to cram parallel stories into one movie. Some of them even work and I would like to see more of them.

Ein Schauer jagt über die schwummrig beleuchtete Nebeldecke der Stadt. Was liegt da näher, als ins Kino zu gehen?
Meine Challenge ist recht simpel gestrickt:
Schaue so viele Dokumentationen im Oktober, wie möglich. Bevorzugt im Kino.

A shiver chases across the city's dimly lit blanket of fog. What could be better than going to the movies?
My challenge is quite simple:
Watch as many documentaries as possible in October. Preferably at the movies.

Democracy Noir
A good summary of the political situation in Hungary over the last 14 years. After Viktor Orbán came to power with the Fidesz party, the constitution was changed with a two-thirds majority. The film accompanies an opposition politician, a journalist and an activist.
Mediha
After being freed from the hands of IS, Mediha and her brothers live in a camp in Kurdish northern Iraq. What makes this film so special is the strongly personal touch. Mediha and her brothers film, often themselves.
Char... the No Man's Island
Soil streaked with wetness breaks into the wide river. Soon this “char” will no longer exist. Instead, a new island is being created elsewhere.

The Empty Grave
The Mbano family in Tanzania mourns the loss of their great-grandfather. During the Maji Maji War at the beginning of the 20th century, the occupying forces of the colony “German East Africa” killed him and took his head to for examination purposes in line with the racial theory of the time. His grave remained empty.
Forest
We get to know the family at the beginning, there is hardly any exposition. Only as the film progresses does it become clear that they live next to the forest where refugees are starving and freezing to death.
Cow
In a cycle, the life of a cow from domesticated breeding, which is accompanied at all stages of its existence by the close-up.
Where the Trees Bear Meat
A projection of the climate crisis and its effects on the vast space of a family's steppes for Gaucho Omar.
Element of Crime in Wenn es dunkel und kalt wird in Berlin
Charly Hübner begleitet eine Woche lang die Band der mittlerweile älteren Herren des melancholischen Rocks, der mit der zwischen Liebeslyrik und Misstandspoesie schwankenden Texte Sven Regeners verschmilzt.
Buñuel: A Surrealist Filmmaker
Some informative points about Buñuel's life, his relationship with Salvador Dalí, the Catholic Church and, of course, symbols in his films.

Small Town Curtains
It's hard to tell exactly what is made up and acted out, and what is actually real. A sentimental reflection on self-image, family and hardships.
The Yard
The fusion of personal story, globalized job arbitrariness, and social obtuseness thrilled me.
The Homecoming
Gunnar and his wife Herdís are surprised by their son Davíð: from a long vacation in Europe he brings his new girlfriend. Family circumstances are just hilarious.
Bear Island
The Wegge brothers Inge, Håkon and Markus set out on the adventure of a lifetime: they travel to the island and spend several months alone in the wilderness.
The Garbage Helicopter
A laconic road movie in black and white with borrowings from Aki Kaurismäki and Jim Jarmusch.
Amateurs
A Swedish village gets the offer from a German discounter to build logistics there. The mayor asks all citizens to produce a trailer video about the village. Everyone has a different perspective, but not as expected.
The Tree Feller
A silent and slow film about a man working in the city and coming back to his village to find inner peace.
Grand Hotel
Two outsiders meet in the hotel. A good to watch film with humor, melancholy and joie de vivre.
Fantasten
Hard crime thriller about a father rescuing his son from the mafia. But it was his own fault being in this situation.
Euthanizer
He gets rid of unwanted animals and pets, but does it for a reason.
Very hard to watch, not for the faint of heart.

A Difficult Year
Eine Zumutung auf mehreren Ebenen. Die beiden Hauptfiguren sind die gesamte Geschichte hinweg unsympathisch und bekommen nicht die geringste Katharsis zugestanden. Pseudo-Feminismus und schwammige Standpunkte zu Klimawandel und Konsum sind selbst für eine Mainstream-Komödie unfassbar platt.
What You Can See from Here
Vielleicht fehlt mir die persönliche Erfahrung eines spießigen Dorfes im Westerwald, um die kauzigen Anspielungen wiederzuentdecken. Wenn es das Ziel des Films ist, die befremdliche Langeweile eines solchen Ortes zu übertragen, dann ist das bei mir offenbar sehr gut gelungen.
Someday We'll Tell Each Other Everything
In einem thüringischen Dorf 1990: Umbruch nach dem Mauerfall, die 19-jährige Maria fühlt sich angezogen vom Eigenbrödler Henner. Stimmung und Licht ist gut eingefangen, aber die Beziehung ist mir zu wenig hinterfragt, auch wenn sich darüber diskutieren ließe, wer dabei welche (Macht-)Position innehat.
Memory of Water
Interessantes Thema über ein Finnland in einer Zukunft, wo Trinkwasser Mangelware ist. Trockene Erzählweise (höhö), hölzernes Schauspiel und zu oberflächliches Worldbuilding.
Cocaine Bear
Schwarzbär in amerikanischen Nationalpark bekommt die Nase gepudert von einem versehentlich aus dem Flugzeug gefallenen Kokain-Paket. Eine Portion Trash-Guilty-Pleasure, die erträglich ist, wenn man mal für anderthalb Stunden das Hirn ausschaltet.
Babylon
Hommage an das Kino mit Blick auf das aufstrebende Hollywood in den 1920ern. Darsteller*innen ganz gut, aber zu selbstverliebt, Fan-Gehabe und nervige Slapstick mit Charakteren, die zu sehr an der Oberfläche bleiben.
Mad Cats
Abgefahrene, sehr japanische Komödie, die keinen Hehl aus ihrem Low-Budget-Charakter macht. Trotz interessanter Einfälle zu amateurhaft und kaum mit Wiederschauwert.
Miss Viborg
Dänische Mischung aus „Ziemlich beste Freunde“, „Paulette“ und „The Whale“. Solvej lebt in einer kleinen Wohnung eines Hochhausblocks in Viborg und geht nur selten raus. Zu klischeehaft und konventionell erzählt. die Sinneswandel der Charaktere sind unglaubwürdig.
Crows - Nature Is Watching Us
Interessantes Thema, aber da der der Film offenbar wissenschaftlich ernst genommen werden will, fallen zu viele Plattitüden aus Tierfilmen.
Vamos a la Playa
Sextourismus und Wohlstandgefälle in einer natürlichen und ehrlichen Umsetzung. Drei Mittzwanziger sind in Kuba unterwegs. Es fehlen die Ideen, die Realität ist dann wie immer doch komplexer.

Neustes Nolan-Epos mit der Geschichte über Robert Oppenheimer, der ersten Atombombe und Oppenheimers Konsequenzen im politischen Klima der 50er. Stark verklausuliert, technisch brillant, nicht-linear in mehreren Zeitebenen und fantastische Darsteller*innen.

Wunderbare Bilder in leuchtenden Farben sind nah dran an den Figuren, die Musik fließt herzzerreißend in den emotionalen Kanon mit ein. Eine Geschichte über Freundschaft, gesellschaftliche Erwartungen und eine persönliche Tragödie.
The Banshees of Inisherin
Ungewöhnliche Erzählung über eine aufgekündigte Freundschaft. Die absurde Übertreibung stellt alles in Frage, was man als Publikum erwartet. Die Landschaft in der irischen Provinz und die Düsternis in den Hän sind wunderbar in Szene gesetzt.
Decision to Leave
Eine für Korea typisch komplexe Beziehungsgeschichte. Hae-joon ermitteln in einem Mordfall und kommt Tang, der Frau und Verdächtigen des Opfers, sehr nahe. Durch kleine Gesten und Zucken in den Mundwinkeln wird sie zur mysteriösen Gestalt.
