It was entertaining but I wouldn’t say I liked it

This was delightful! It was my first time seeing something directed by Lean and my first time seeing Katherine Hepburn. I now need to see more of both.

Hepburn is so charming in this, she reminds me of Diane Keaton. She’s tomboyish but elegant, mature but hopeful.

The opening credits are gorgeous- all paintings as colorful as the film. It’s filmed entirely in Italy, and I really enjoy seeing cities in a past time period. The architecture and clothes are beautiful- the interior of the house Hepburn’s character stays in reminded me of the Conformist.

The dialogue was laugh out loud funny to me, although my gin and tonic may have had something to do with it. It was sad that Hepburn didn’t get with the hostess, but at least the guy chasing her is nice to look at. My mom enjoyed this one a lot too, in part because she visited Italy this past fall and got to see sites she visited in the movie!

Why couldn’t Wicked have pulled a Love Witch and imitated the og technicolor.. it looks like a moving painting!

Didn’t realize that the whole story kicks off because of a Karen nimby neighbor

I was certainly looking forward to this but it was even better than i expected. Have never seen the musical or even heard all the songs prior to this but I’m officially a fan!

This is a new Christmas classic for me I can feel it.

I thought it was hilarious and cute, and I did find Frosty hot!

Appreciated the nod to Lindsay Lohan’s Christmas movie (and if you’re deciding whether or not to trust my opinion, know that I loved that one too.)

I really liked when the Castro cop taught Frosty how to romance The Ladies.

Devastating. Really captured that stomach dropping feeling of realizing someone doesn’t really care about you, following the new lovers’ hyperreal limerence

Was a trip hearing some people in my theater afterwards discussing why she might have reacted that way at the end like bless your heart

This was so cute and I was loving it… until the ending. It was just stupid to me and lessened the film’s overall impact.

Anything for the swag bag?

I think I may be too American to have enjoyed this but also maybe it just wasn’t good, based on the jokes I did catch. Score and lighting were cool though! And the bog bodies looked perfectly nasty when dormant.. limp like cooked meat.

I loved this!! It looked and sounded off-kilter and unique in a way that complemented the story and concept- which were really interesting.

The only aesthetic comparison that came to mind for me was Clockwork Orange, which is refreshing compared to the “sameness” of a lot of the horror I’ve seen in the past year or so.

I had to rewind a few things to get everything straight but it all seemed to add up from what I can tell, which I appreciate.

My only complaints are that I don’t feel like I fully understand the motivations of the character in the final scene, and it did some of the Explaining the Plot thing like Saltburn and Longlegs, but not to the same extent, which made it less annoying.

Overall this was so much better than the reviews I read on here prior led me to expect.

Some people in my theater were laughing every 5 seconds and it was super annoying. Why did you even bother coming and paying if you’ve already made up your mind?

Anyway I’m still thinking about this one. I like that it didn’t feel or look like anything else I’ve seen this year. I didn’t really like the brassy color palette, cgi effects, and overall steampunk chic aesthetic, but at least you would never look at any given frame and think, “did A24 produce this?”

The messaging, poetry-quoting, and literal manifesto at the end were so earnest it was uncomfortable. I don’t know what to make of it. At some points while watching this, I’d hear a line that makes me think of the meme “I’m 13 and this is deep,” and think maybe this whole thing is mush.

But then at other points, I’d be enjoying the dialogue, or great costuming, or the soaring orchestra, or the split screen following a weird aspect ratio.. and I can’t write it off.

The two things I was most reminded of while watching this were The Holy Mountain and the Carousel of Progress ride at Tomorrowland- two of my favorite pieces of media ever. I’m pretty sure Megalopolis is not one of my favorites ever, or maybe even at all, but there’s something to it?

Beautiful animation and score!! Worth it for those alone. The story is decent although the ending didn’t stick the landing for me- it was a cop out.

Loved having the theater to myself for this one and seeing something in 3D that shines with it. The dialogue was funnier than I expected, and the animals were all so cute!

It was a cool choice to feature a pillar beach like the one  in Iceland- is that where this was meant to take place? Didn’t quite seem like it in other respects..

Loved the detail of the asshole pretty boy collecting 90s records and thinking it must be.. shall we say… a dead giveaway

Is it just me or were the dry cleaning and soul train bits fairly uncomfortable??

Such a ride!!! 🧪💄🦷
Was very satisfying to wonder “how will a person do what the egg did???”
And then you see THAT!

Loved the score and keep reminding myself I need to check out if whoever did it has an album or something.

Style matters a lot to me and this film had it!
Lime green bile and white tile and sparkly pink spandex…
Furthermore, the content and plot were generally coherent, which I appreciated over many other horror movies I’ve seen so far this year.

There are certainly some questions regarding the mechanics/rules/properties of the “substance” I was left with by the end of the movie, but this didn’t ruin the experience for me. I do wonder if the screenwriter fleshed out answers even if they chose not to include them.

(Side note: this is my first movie seen as an AMC “A-lister”!)

The pitfalls of gentle parenting (I would NOT have gone back for Hoppy)

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to and was happy to find that the previews did not give everything away. It was engaging, suspenseful, and hilarious.

I’ve been saying this about so many horror movies I’ve seen in theaters lately but: loved the sound design, use of color, and how it was shot, but thematically this was lacking for me. I also found the “chapters”/neon red title cards to be a lot less effective than similar ones used in Longlegs. 

All that said, I thought Willa Fitzgerald’s performance was incredibly impressive and I hope to see more of her.

I hated Saltburn but I loved this! 

My favorite parts of this were the dancing scenes! The way they were shot felt really dynamic, like I was being twirled along too.

If you just enjoy it as a campy thriller/horror movie I think you’ll have fun. It’s pretty, I like the colors and set design (yellow towels!)

Ending this with an awkward Grimes needle drop was apt, because this film fell completely flat for me.

There were so many choices that didn’t make sense, without an interesting enough result to make up for it. 

Just a few problems that are coming to mind: the interludes featuring Hope using her skincare products didn’t feel purposeful and were boring to watch, there was nothing striking about the camerawork or palette, the score was pretty but forgettable, and a moment that felt like it should have been a grand reveal of the plot twist came after we already knew of it!

I’m definitely going to look into the true story that inspired this, because I suspect a low budget true crime doc would be more enjoyable than this film was.

I enjoyed seeing Michaela Jaé Rodriguez in a new role, but I regret seeing this instead of the AMC screening of Lawrence of Arabia that started at the same time tonight.

Anyways I loved this so much. I consider it second only to I Saw the TV Glow for 2024, and that’s partly due to how personal the former was for me.

I don’t think the plot was difficult to understand at all, and the monsters were genuinely scary. There were also some really funny bits of dialogue. To me, this film is ultimately about sibling relationships, and especially, how siblings can team up to escape a toxic family and break the cycle of trauma.

The moody atmosphere and color palette really brought me into the world of the film, and the score was perfect.

Excited to see more of Hunter Schafer, and loved that the lion guy from the Eurovision movie was in this.

This was vibey- I love 80s fashion and music. I liked the soundtrack and Moses Sumney’s character with his cozy video shop. I enjoyed Mia Goth a lot more in this than the other movie I’ve seen her in, Infinity Pool (which I hated.)

The style was just not unique or impressive enough to overcome the (lack of?) plot in this. 

Definitely more curious about Pearl and X, which people on here seemed to like better.

RIP longlegs you would’ve loved Velvet Goldmine..

Anyway, I went into this blind and am holding off on reading reviews until I’ve articulated my own thoughts.

I’m frustrated by the emphasis on longlegs’ obsession with Bolan and T. Rex thru soundtrack, bedroom posters, and even lyrics displayed onscreen early in the film. This frustration extends to my broader primary criticism of the film.

I don’t feel the film explores longlegs’ character with any depth. Why does he love T. Rex so much? (Most Americans don’t know that band beyond recognizing “Bang a Gong”) Why has he taken the time to become a highly skilled dollmaker? Why is he fixated on birthdays? As far as I can tell on a first watch, it’s just a shallow collection of idiosyncrasies.

This is not to discount Nic Cage’s performance! I really enjoyed it, and thought Kiernan Shipka was incredible in this as well. 

The first 10 minutes of this movie are one of the best openers I’ve seen, ever. The soundtrack is great, and I liked how the frame of the shot mimicked the shape of the slides Lee was shown later in the film. It was suspenseful throughout and I jumped at least once!

I’m still chewing on the ending. I feel like my opinion of this film could change significantly over the next few days…

Am I the only one who thinks this isn’t paranormal at all, and is instead about religious and familial abuse?

Didn’t resonate with me in the way that I’d hoped. A lot of the story felt a bit surface level, although the dialogue between Feña and his ex hit home.

The final shot where we just sit listening to the rain was lovely.

After finishing this I realized it’s the first horror movie to remind me of Scream while standing well on its own. The writing is smart, and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! I didn’t guess the ending.

This film’s rich kid satire also reminded me of Saltburn. It is far more effective at what Saltburn tried to relate, without being so obnoxious. It’s effortlessly stylish, suspenseful, and funny.

Really enjoyed Amandla Stenberg in this and the neon glow sets- the gym scene with the eye mask especially. The soundtrack was great too, with an Azealia Banks needledrop and an original Charli XCX song that I’ve been listening to years before I got around to watching this.

This is the first movie I’ve managed to stay awake for since I had surgery a day ago. It’s frothy and fun, and the opening credits are creative. (Movies don’t seem to have opening credits like that anymore?)

Music was whatever, story was fine. I did enjoy the large impact of a party line on the plot- an artifact!

If anyone ever asks me what it’s like to transition when you’re closer to 30 than 20 (this is referred to as a Trans Elder) I’ll tell them to watch this.

Is it so common? Finding your way back to an old self you tried to bury under the football field of your high school? God I hope so. 

I must not be the only one who feels like a teenager again- like only minutes but also decades have ed. 

I’m back in the suburbs picking up where I left off.
The past lives in a bigger city are a distant dream.

I’m driving around town (a little reckless a little freer) and working a shit job but I love everyone I work with and they like me too so I hear all the gossip. And I love hearing it but it’s embarrassing because my prom was 7 years ago.

My heart is broken because I feel things for Real now instead of in third person 
but I’m not miserable anymore.

I could go on but I don’t want to forget to actually comment on the movie- the aesthetic, the soundtrack, the new grungy Caroline Polachek, the pink, the Bratmobile basement poster, the 90s nostalgia, the Twin Peaks bar jam scene- it’s perfect and dreamy and beautiful.

I love this movie and I love the ending because that’s exactly what happens when you do what she did. Just like in the movie, just like in my real life, I was naive enough to think hitting rock bottom wasn’t inevitable.

Got my mom to watch this with me after it was recently the subject of a Jeopardy question.

Her take? 
“Better than Xanadu”

I loved almost everything about this and had so much fun at the theater! The techno score was great, and I can’t think of anything comparable that’s not just a soundtrack with some Orbital etc. The continuous remix done by Boys Noize has been on repeat for me lately, and I wish Reznor, Ross, and the Boys would team up for about 5 more albums worth of music!

The plot had my attention the entire runtime, and as far as I could tell, the acting was good. I still think about Zendaya’s shit-eating grin when she gets the 2 guys to kiss. Even though THAT moment of the final match felt inevitable, I was on the verge of cheering when it happened.

The camerawork was mostly fantastic! It felt so dynamic and exciting. And again, unlike anything I’ve seen before. 

My only complaints are as follows: 
-score during the sauna scene felt out of place, something more pared down would have been better
-Some of the visual effects were too heavy handed for me. One that sticks out is when Zendaya is walking through a hallway, and her image fades into the background as she’s walking, while the background remains in focus. Felt like something out of an old music video

Love the interplay between interviews and snippets of his films. Beautiful and atmospheric- made me daydream about what it’d be like to be one of those pool boys swimming nude at The Castle. The slick haircuts.. the tailored short shorts…

I am entranced. Not sure if this is the best JT Leroy doc because I haven’t seen others, but the phone recordings and interviews with Laura are worth it.

She’s not very consistent. In one clip…“it’s a pseudonym, it’s fiction.” In another… “it’s not a hoax” and “multiple personality disorder”. Whatever it may be, there’s a pain with which I can’t help but empathize.
