Unfortunately, the first hour plus is as tedious as it gets, bogged down in belated needless and largely unrewarding effort to create a mythology out of 6 preceding movies that never really bothered with serialisation (II clearly went back to its home planet). One attempted callback was frankly head-slapping in its stupidity and ultimate pointlessness.

But once the action starts, and charges on relentlessly, things settle down and this instalment comfortably delivers the goods. Cruise once again goes above and…

Maybe it’s lowered expectations after too many mediocre or worse instalments (including the TV shows), but surprisingly not bad. In large part because this instalment bothers to think about its characters (even if it only develops a few of them) and doesn’t embarrass itself using them to build out an allegory about depression, isolation and mutual . And without going too crazy bombastic with the big finale setpiece - the metaphor is enough.

The Predator concept works best when things are kept simple. And this instalment is the first one in a long time to get that right, running the opposite direction from the overly elaborate yet totally pointless setup of The Predator. Very effective and creditable on its own.
