]]>Josef Gabcík: [to Lenka and Marie] Your gonna get yourselves noticed and that gets us noticed... and if we all get noticed we all get killed.
A very enjoyable War movie experience. I was drawn into Anthropoid from the start and found the film to be tense, compelling with a great deal of dread too. Character development was also decent, making the eventual outcomes of the Czech/Slovakian resistance heart-rending.
There is also plenty intrigue in the plot as our main protagonists (Cillian Murphy as Jozef Gabčík and Jamie Dornan as Jan Kubiš), plot the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, a German high-ranking SS and police official during the Nazi era and a principal architect of the Holocaust.
To finish
Plot Intro - In December 1941, German occupation in Europe has neared its height. Two agents from the Czechoslovak exile government, a Slovak soldier, Jozef Gabčík and a Czech, Jan Kubiš are parachuted into their occupied country. Jozef is injured when he crashes through a tree upon landing, but both men set out to find their in the resistance movement. They are discovered shortly afterwards by fake resistance fighters who turn out to be traitors; one is shot by Jozef but the other man escapes. Stealing their truck, the agents head for Prague.
When they seek out their , they are directed to Dr. Eduard, a veterinary surgeon who stitches Jozef's injuries. Eduard informs them their was arrested by the Gestapo and arranges for them to meet other resistance , led by "Uncle" Jan Zelenka-Hajský and Ladislav Vaněk. Gabčík and Kubiš reveal that they are under orders to carry out "Operation Anthropoid," the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the main architect of the Final Solution, and the Reichsprotektor of German–occupied Czechoslovakia.

Mayor Tilman: Do you like baseball, do you, Anderson?
Anderson: Yeah, I do. You know, it's the only time when a black man can wave a stick at a white man and not start a riot.
Is this Alan Parker's and Gene Hackman's best work?? Probably. I haven't seen all their films but Mississippi Burning is going to take some beating. Hackman as FBI Agent Rupert Anderson has the best scenes in the film to show his acting capabilities and he delivers on all s. He's excellent whether it's humourous dialogue, straight forward scenes, touching emotional scenes or he's losing his temper or being aggressive. The brilliant direction, narrative and cast as a whole make Mississippi Burning such a compelling viewing experience.
It's probably fair to say Parker isn't the most flamboyant director but that doesn't mean he isn't a damned good one. He gets so much from the actors, the scenes and the excellent plot, really bringing about a tense and riveting film. There just isn't a ounce of superfluous fat for the duration of the film, and the editing and pacing is beautifully rendered.
This gritty subject matter seems to suit Parker's directing style, which is very strong on visuals and adds to the tension and emotional depth of the film.
Parker's filmography is without a doubt a very impressive one with several critical and commercial successes. Fame, Pink Floyd the Wall, Angela's Ashes, Bugsy Malone, the Committments, and Midnight Express to name but a few put plenty bums on seats at the Cinema.
Mississippi Burning could however be is modus operandi, within his body of work, and I wouldn't argue with anyone who said it was.
The subject matter is incredibly heavy and for me heartbreaking and is still relevant on so many levels in the current modern world.
Willem Dafoe (FBI Agent Alan Ward) and s McDormand (Mrs Pell) both give top notch performances in their respective roles, adding some much to the compelling nature of the film.
I'm so glad I picked Mississippi Burning as my "tribute" film to Gene Hackman, as it gave him the lines and character to really provide a great performance. My question would be, did those murderous racists get their just desserts when you hear what their sentences were?
Great film, essential viewing.
**Gene Hackman R.I.P.**
Plot Intro - In 1964, three civil rights workers – two Jewish and one black – go missing while they are in fictional Jessup County, Mississippi (the actual events took place in Neshoba County), organizing a voter registry for African Americans. The FBI sends Alan Ward and Rupert Anderson to investigate. Ward is a Northerner, senior in rank but much younger than Anderson, and approaches the investigation by the book. In contrast, Anderson, a former Mississippi sheriff, is more nuanced in his approach. The pair find it difficult to conduct interviews with the local townspeople, as Sheriff Ray Stuckey and his deputies influence the public and are linked to a branch of the Ku Klux Klan.
With the help of the son of a local pastor, the FBI is finally able to bring forward a witness who saw Klansmen firebomb a house, and three white men are arrested and tried for felony arson. A local judge, however, gives the men a token suspended sentence while deriding the FBI as "outside agitators" who provoked the men to violence. He then releases the men, who promptly hang the witness' father and attempt to kill the witness. The FBI evacuate the family to the north and realize they will receive no help at all from local authorities.

]]>David Sutton: I'm sorry, Louise. I seldom hit a woman, but if you don't leave me alone, I'll wind up kicking babies.
Possessed is a decent 1940's Thriller/Noir, well acted, directed and with good cinematography, but I just found it to be too predicatable.
Lead Joan Crawford pulls out all the stops however and shows what a great actress she was, if maybe a little over melodramatic in her execution.
Directed by Curtis Bernhardt, Possessed explores the psychological breakdown of Louise Howell (Joan Crawford), a woman whose mental state deteriorates after being rejected by her lover, David Sutton (Van Heflin), and her subsequent marriage to a man who she can't forgive for his relationship with her stepdaughter. The film is a story of love jealousy and subsequent mental health anguish, and how relationship difficulties can tear people apart. Tropes that fit nicely into the film Noir genre and the cinematography is excellent as those long sinister Shadows abound. I would have rated the film higher but I just kept predicting the next twist or path in the storywhich reduced the story impact.
A good film which may reveal more subtle nuances on further viewings. Worth a look.
Plot Intro - A woman wanders through Los Angeles, saying little more than "David". itted to a hospital's psychiatric ward in a catatonic stupor, and interrogated by a doctor, she calls herself Louise Howell, and recounts her life in intermittent spurts, starting with her memory of her lover David Sutton playing Schumann for her, she saying, "I want to have a monopoly on you." He does not return her ion, but returns her home in a boat, and tells her their relationship is over.
She lives, and works as a nurse, at the lakeside home of the Grahams. Louise takes care of Pauline, the invalid wife of Dean Graham. Pauline is irascible and venomous, and thinks Louise is having an affair with her husband; Louise wants to leave.

"Carpe diem, seize the day, boys, make your lives extraordinary," and "No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world." - John Keating
Watched back in the day on release at the pictures with my then girlfriend, this is a gutrenching yet beautiful film. I was in tears on conclusion at the Cinema and I was in tears again, this time in my house. This it seems is the type of melodrama I love, and it certainly pulled me back to my formative years, in a wonderful nostalgic way.
The film is a coming-of-age drama film set at a prestigious all boys boarding school, where a new English teacher, John Keating, inspires his students to break free from tradition and embrace individuality through the power of poetry and the philosophy of "Carpe Diem" (seize the day).
It's a stuffy prep school, you know the type follow the rules or face the consequences, and Keating frees his students from this and shows them how to think and act for themselves and helps them to overcome their innervisions. However there's always those controlling parents who want to force their child to do what they want and discard the ions and direction a young adult might want to take. This is something that was very close to home for me, especially at that time in 1989. The boys all going to the Dead Poets Society to recite poetry amongst others things, meeting girls, expressing yourself through art is all incorporated into the film, and the envitable son parent conflict heightens. Never conform or lose yourself.
Plot Intro - In 1959, Todd Anderson begins his junior year of high school at Welton Academy, an Episcopalian all-male preparatory boarding school in Vermont. Todd is assigned one of Welton's top students, junior Neil Perry, as his roommate, and through Neil, he meets his friends: Knox Overstreet, Richard Cameron, Steven Meeks, Gerard Pitts, and Charlie Dalton.
On the first day of classes, the boys are taken aback by the unusual teaching methods of their new English teacher, John Keating. A Welton alumnus who studied English Literature at Cambridge, Keating encourages his students to "seize the day", referencing the Latin expression carpe diem.
Keating has the students take turns standing on his desk to demonstrate ways to look at life differently, tells them to rip out the introduction of their poetry books that explains a mathematical formula for rating poetry, and invites them to make up their own style of walking in a courtyard to encourage their individualism. Keating's methods attract the attention of strict heaster Gale Nolan.
Upon learning that Keating had been a member of the unofficial Dead Poets Society during his time as a student at Welton, Neil restarts the club, and he and his friends sneak off campus to a cave, where they read poetry. Keating's lessons and their involvement with the club encourage them to live their lives on their own . Knox pursues Chris Noel, a cheerleader who is dating Chet Danburry, a football player from a local public school, and whose family is friends with his.

]]>Beautiful, compelling and poignant.
Running on Empty is the story of a counterculture couple on the run from the FBI, and how one of their sons starts to break out of this fugitive lifestyle.
This was a lovely heartfelt movie to watch with the other half on a friday night, and what a performance by River Phoenix. I haven't given a 5 star rating this year for a newly watched film but I had to relent after watching "Running on Empty". I thought to myself what could be better, and not much was the answer.
The premise which has a family on the run from the authorities due to a anti-war protest bombing of a napalm laboratory in 1971, is an interesting one, that keeps a level of tension in the film for it's full duration, as the authorities try to track them down. I particularly found myself rooting for Danny, so he was able to fulfil his life ambitions.
The traps in lying about who you are is a huge theme in the film, and it's evident in every character, not just parents Artie and Annie. They all have to struggle to be who they actually are.
This segues into into themes of family, love, commitment, and the consequences of choices made in the past, particularly the burden placed on the children by their parents' actions.
It's a coming of age journey for Danny to fulfil his educatuonal requirements and start to develop into an adult as his relationship with Lorna starts to become stronger. The ending may be fairly simple but it's a great heartfelt conclusion to a compelling character based movie. I loved it.
Plot Intro - Parents Annie and Arthur Pope are on the run as they were responsible for the anti-war protest bombing of a napalm laboratory in 1971. The incident accidentally blinded and paralyzed a janitor who was not supposed to be there. They have been on the run ever since, relying on an underground network of ers who help them financially. At the time of the incident, their son Danny was two years old. As the film begins, he is in his late teens, and the family, now with younger son Harry, are again relocating and assuming new identities.
Danny's overwhelming talent as a pianist catches the attention of his music teacher Mr. Phillips at school. The teacher begins to pry into Danny's personal life, particularly questioning why records from his previous school are unobtainable. While he pushes Danny to audition for Juilliard, Danny also falls in love with Lorna, the teacher's teenage daughter.

🤠 WESTERNx32 - challenge [2025] 🤠
**9th watched, 14th Mar 25'** No.16 **
Watch a western film starring Lee Van Cleef.
I'm not sure whether I watched the Return of Sabata on a day when my head was in the wrong place, but I found this Spaghetti Western to be very moderate. The plot was fine seeming like it would make a fun comedy bowl of Spaghetti, but the film became bogged down the middle part of the film and Inm started to lose interest. Not only that but the ending was totally far fetched, and nowhere near as good as the original Sabata film which I thoroughly enjoyed.
I even felt Van-Cleef was going through the motions somewhat and that the film, the bogged down section came about because the plot and comedy became overly convoluted.
A Spaghetti Western I feel I will come back to to see if I get more out of it on re-watch, ie: when I've got my comedy head screwed on.
**Note: A Spaghetti Western that Andy Summers rated higher than me, that can't happen very often lol**
Plot Intro - Sabata, a former Confederate army officer and steely-eyed, quick-drawing, impossibly accurate gunman with a trick gun, is working for a travelling circus as a stunt marksman. The circus comes to a small Texas town, where a former subordinate officer, a lieutenant from the army, is running a crooked casino. The man owes Sabata $5,000 from some time ago. Then the circus manager runs off with the circus funds, so Sabata decides to stay in town and try to collect on the debt from his friend.

Giles: If I told you about her, what would I say? That they lived happily ever after? I believe they did. That they were in love? That they remained in love? I'm sure that's true. But when I think of her - of Elisa - the only thing that comes to mind is a poem, whispered by someone in love, hundreds of years ago: "Unable to perceive the shape of You, I find You all around me. Your presence fills my eyes with Your love, It humbles my heart, For You are everywhere."
The Shape of Water is romantic, weird, fantastical, sinister and also has something to say about the proletariat.
My first Del Toro experience was watching the amazing Pan's Labyrinth and I liked the way he brings fantasy/fairy tales into his film narratives. The Shape of Water is no exception, playing essentially as somewhat of a fairy tale and also a love story.
The film explores the power of love to transcend differences and prejudices, both between humans and between humans and other beings. This whimsy is underpinned throughout the duration of the film, as our main protagonists toil against the tyranny of establishment figure Colonel Richard Strickland.
Other tropes or themes explored include marginalisation and otherness. This is highlighted in the characters, Elisa, Giles (a gay man), and Zelda (a Black woman) are all outsiders in a society that values conformity, highlighting the challenges faced by those who don't fit the mainstream.
Whether you like this film or not I think it's hard to deny the depth and imagination Del Toro has infused into the Shape of Water, and as a winner of four academy awards including best picture, shows how it compares to other modern films of 2017.
Highlighting the potential for beauty and connection, even in the most unexpected places, under adverse circumstances Del Toro brings about hope and beauty in a world of conformity and societal expectations. A worthy addition to his filmic catalogue.
Plot Intro - In 1962, during the Cold War, Elisa Esposito works as a janitor in a secret government laboratory in Baltimore, Maryland. Found abandoned by the side of a river as an infant with scars on her neck, Elisa is mute and communicates through sign language, and lives a routine life in an apartment above a movie theater. Her only friends are her closeted middle-aged neighbor Giles, an advertising illustrator, and her coworker Zelda.
Colonel Richard Strickland has captured a mysterious creature from a South American river and taken it to the facility for study. Elisa discovers it is a humanoid amphibian, and eventually bonds with the creature after routinely visiting him in secret.
Seeking to exploit the Amphibian Man's respiration for an advantage in the Space Race, General Frank Hoyt is persuaded by Strickland to vivisect it to examine its biology. Robert Hoffstetler, a scientist who is secretly a Russian spy named Dimitri Mosenkov, pleads unsuccessfully to Strickland to keep him alive for further study, while simultaneously ordered by his Soviet handlers to kill the creature to prevent this.

Father Brennan: [from trailer] How do you control people who no longer believe? You create something to fear.
After seeing some fairly positive reviews for this Omen prequel, I took the plunge and decided it was time to watch it. Although there were some short comings I was pleasantly surprised at how good this film was. At the beginning of the film Charles Dance had to meet his maker with a head injury that had the worst CGI I've ever seen that left me thinking this film could be a special effects car crash. Thankfully I was wrong as the effects in the rest of the film were pretty decent.
Nell Tiger Free who played lead character Margaret, an American sent to Rome to work at an orphanage before taking the veil, gave a performance that kept me interested and compelled, with lots of nuance in her acting.
The sinister Omen vibe is there in spades, and First Omen is a worthy addition to the franchise.
One of my caveats has to be in regard Ralph Ineson who Father Brennan, a priest who warns Margaret of a conspiracy within the church. To put it politely his Irish accent leaves a lot to be desired, and as he s a reasonavly pivotal character, ie he has a faur amount if screen time, it can be a tad annoying. This a side however the tension and creeoy vibe, and plot make for a fascinating Omen installment.
Main protagonist Margaret uncovers a dark conspiracy orchestrated by radical elements within the church who seek to regain power by bringing about the birth of the Antichrist to create fear and drive people back to the church. This is the main premise but how the plot develops is sinister and disturbing and has some interesting twists.
The conclusion segues in a very satisfying way into the 70's Omen film we all love and know, but also leaves some compelling loose ends. iI'm so glad I picked this up on Blu Ray as I'm.sure to watch it again, maybe in an Omen binge.
**This is all for you Damien**
Plot Intro - In Rome, 1971, Father Brennan presses Father Harris about an occult conspiracy; Harris gives him a photograph of a baby with the name "Scianna" inscribed. Harris is killed when a pipe falls from a church construction scaffold and splits his head open.
Amid political protests, American novice nun Margaret Daino arrives at the Vizzardeli Orphanage. She meets Cardinal Lawrence, Father Gabriel, Abbess Silva, Sister Anjelica, and her roommate and fellow novice Luz. Luz invites Margaret to a disco, where they meet two men. Margaret dances with the man named Paolo before blacking out. She awakens the next day with no memory of what happened.
Margaret bonds with the mistreated orphan Carlita, who is plagued by disturbing visions. Father Brennan warns her about Carlita, saying "evil things" will happen. She spots Carlita showing Sister Anjelica a drawing of a pregnant woman being restrained; moments later, Sister Anjelica immolates and hangs herself.

Dementus: [after Dementus pulls the knife handle from Furiosa's boot] That wasn't hope, it was instinct.
As a big fan of the Mad Max franchise, I've been very excited to watch this prequel. I've patiently being waiting for the Blu Ray in HMV, to drop from £14.99 to £9.99 to pounce on it.
That time arrived thankfully a couple of weeks ago, and I found Furiosa to be very satisfying indeed as a prequel.
Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa, Alyla Browne as child and teen Furiosa, provide more than decent performances but it's Chris Hemsworth as Dementus, the deranged warlord leader that steals the show, who I thought was both entertaining and gauged his role just right. He was a constant menacing and gruesome antagonist throughout. Anya Taylor-Joy grew more into her role when she had more dialogue and also struck up her friendship with Praetorian Jack (Tom Burke), the commander of the Citadel's first War Rig. Also I found for an action movie there was some good twists as the story unfolded and the conclusion was satisfying to say the least.
An age old issue with prequels is that you always know if certain characters will survive a movie, especially if it's an action movie, it can detract from your enjoyment as the suspense can be lowered. However in Furiosa, Furiosa starts the film with two arms.
From the offset you're asking how does she lose this limb during the movie, based on what you know from Fury Road.
The conclusion is a very satisfying one up there with the Mad Max 2 ending imo, and all I've got to say is, the Peach Pit. Great franchise addition.
Postscript - I do prefer Charlize Theron as Furiosa, and wish Miller would do a sequel rather than another Mad Max prequel which has been mooted.
Plot Intro - Decades after the apocalypse, Australia is a radioactive wasteland and the Green Place of Many Mothers is one of the last remaining areas with fresh water and agriculture. Raiders uncover the Green Place while two children, Furiosa and Valkyrie, are picking peaches. Furiosa tries to sabotage their motorcycles, but the raiders capture her as a prize for their leader, Dementus of the Biker Horde.
Mary, Furiosa's mother, pursues them to the Horde's camp to rescue Furiosa, but Dementus tracks them down. Mary stays behind to buy Furiosa time to escape and gives her a peach pit to her by, but Furiosa refuses to leave Mary behind. Dementus forces Furiosa to watch her mother's crucifixion. Haunted by his own family's death, Dementus adopts Furiosa as his daughter, hoping she will lead him to the Green Place.

Albert Einstein: When they've punished you enough, they'll serve you salmon and potato salad, make speeches, give you a medal, and pat you in the back telling all is forgiven. Just , it won't be for you... it would be for them.
The spliting of the atom, one of, if not the most historic moments in relatively recent times. The dropping of a nuclear bomb to ensure the end of a world war, which became two bombs dropped. Essentially a race between the Americans, Germans and Russians to create the first neutron bomb, and not only a pivotal moment in the second world war but global history.
Nolan's film is certainly heavy subject matter interwoven with Julius Robert Oppenheimer's, (Cillian Murphy) failed relationships and political ponderings. At three hours Oppenheimer is a long film but I never felt the dialogue heavy film was a chore, quite the opposite the time ed at a fair lick with the film progressing nicely. The acting was top notch and I'd go as far as to say the acting was 5 star where as the film overall was a 4 star affair for me.
The ending of the film actually wrapped up too quickly with the establishments subsequent acceptance of Oppenheimer in the aftermath of the Japanese bombings and his work to create the neutron bomb. His political musings were finally swept under the carpet after the government's initial investigations into his left wing leanings. The films story is basically a linear one, probably not lending to being a good film to re-watch at a future time. From the plot perspective the reason for the Germans slowing down in their exploration to create their own atomic bomb was brushed over quickly, explained as their anti-semitic leanings, but we didn't see this develop in the story which was a tad disappointing as the story wasn't rounded out fully. However I can see why the film would be Oscar winning material, whether it was the production values, acting, the direction and cinematography, they were all very impressive. In regard to Nolan's filmography I would say I'm still a bigger fan of his earlier work, Memento, Inception, and the Batman trilogy spring to mind. Still a film that is well worth seeing.
Plot Intro - In 1926, 22-year-old doctoral student J. Robert Oppenheimer grapples with anxiety and homesickness while studying experimental quantum physics under Patrick Blackett at the University of Cambridge in England. Oppenheimer clashes with Blackett, leaving him a poisoned apple, but he later retrieves it. Visiting scientist Niels Bohr advises Oppenheimer to study theoretical physics at the University of Göttingen in .
Oppenheimer completes his PhD and meets scientist Isidor Isaac Rabi. They later meet theoretical physicist Werner Heisenberg in Switzerland. Wanting to expand quantum physics research in the United States, Oppenheimer teaches at the University of California, Berkeley and the California Institute of Technology. He marries Katherine "Kitty" Puening, a biologist and ex-communist, and has an intermittent affair with Jean Tatlock, a troubled communist psychiatrist who later dies in an apparent suicide.[a]
When nuclear fission is discovered in 1938, after the Germans succeed in splitting the atom, Oppenheimer realizes it can be weaponized. In 1942, during World War II, U.S. Army Colonel Leslie Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project, recruits Oppenheimer as the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory to develop an atomic bomb. Oppenheimer fears the German nuclear research program, led by Heisenberg, might yield a fission bomb for the Nazis sooner.

]]>Turner: Nothing is true, everything is permitted.
This film is some whacked out sh*t to say the least, however it's very entertaining, creepy and thought provoking, and I loved it. Part Crime film part psychedelic journey Performance certainly takes you on a far out trip.
The film explores how characters' identities are shaped by their environments and the roles they play.
James Foxes character Chas is the prime example of this as his character changes from a hard nut gangster to a more arty individual.
The title itself even suggests the idea of acting and presenting oneself in a certain way, which is central to the film's themes.
The film blurs the lines between the real world and the fictional world, as characters seem to merge and transform, especially Chas and Turner (Mick Jagger) in the latter part of the film.
The ending itself (without giving any spoilers) of the film "Performance" is ambiguous and open to interpretation lending to a thought provoking reflection on the films outcome and themes. A cult classic with a cult following. Far out.
Plot Intro - Chas is a member of an East London gang, led by gangster Harry Flowers; his specialty is intimidation through violence, as he collects pay-offs for Flowers. Chas is very good at his job, and has a reputation for liking it. His s*xual liaisons are casual and rough. When Flowers decides to take over a betting shop owned by Joey Maddocks, he forbids Chas to get involved because he feels Chas' complicated personal history with Maddocks may lead to trouble. Chas is angry about this and later humiliates Maddocks, who retaliates by wrecking Chas' apartment and attacking Chas, who in turn shoots him, packs a suitcase and runs from the scene.
When Flowers makes it clear that he has no intention of offering protection to Chas, but instead wants him eliminated, Chas decides to head for the countryside to hide out, but after overhearing a musician talk about going on tour and leaving his rented room in Notting Hill Gate, Chas goes there and pretends the musician was a friend who recommended him. He tells Pherber, a woman living there, that he is a fellow performer, juggler Johnny Dean. She lives there with Turner, a reclusive, eccentric former rock star who has 'lost his demon', and Lucy, with whom he enjoys a non-possessive and bis*xual ménage à trois. Floating in and out of the house is a child, Lorraine.

“I had a vision from God that said ‘you will be a mod from this day on’. That was f*cking it for me mate.” - Paul Weller
Don't yer just love it when Paul Weller is melodramatic. Well if I enjoyed my re-watch of
The Jam: About The Young Idea, I bloody loved this revisit of one of Weller's greatest albums Wild Wood. Weller really tapped into the 90's zeitgeist in this wonderful pastoral folk acoustic album and it the documentary brought back some fantastic memories for me. I first discovered the album in it's entirety in 94' when a friend loaned me the Cd and I subsequently purchased the Cd myself. It's an album where every track is a banger imo, and I played it over and over until it was engrained in my psyche.
I'd actually listened to Wild Wood recently too, so watching the docu came at exactly the right time and it was great listening to the band and especially the anecdotes of Steve White the drummer. All the tracks from the album were discussed by various of the band, including the way they were constructed. Paul Weller touched on some on the lyrics and their meaning too.
I was totally immersed for the duration.

Ageism,' or whatever you want to call it, is a very English phenomenon. You don't get it too much in many other cultures. And no one says it about authors or poets or filmmakers. 'Oh, they're too old to make films or write books.'
- Paul Weller
After watching The Banshees of Inisherin (Not a good experience) the previous night, this was just the tonic I needed. To say I thoroughly enjoyed The Jam About the Young Idea and Record On, Paul Weller Wild Wood would be an understatement. This was a second re-watch for me and I still loved it just as much as the first time I saw it. For a music documentary it is so well constructed with short interviews comments and anecdotes from band , fans, stars and record producers it really is an excellent in depth analysis of all things "The Jam".
Directed by Bob Smeaton, the docu traces the band’s formation and success between 1975 and 1982, and is set against the backdrop of the ever changing politics, fashion and attitudes that shaped the period of late 70s and early 80s.
Nice to see this fine documentary replayed on Sky Arts just after the unfortunate ing of Rick Buckler. A great tribute to his ing. R.I.P Rick Buckler, your legacy will live on.

Feck*n' rubbish, controversial I know.
I'm so pleased I didn't get the Blu Ray for this film, and I need to add it to the never watch again film list.
What seems to be a universally liked/loved film did very little if nothing for me. The comments and imagery relating to the Irish Civil War, and escalating conflict between friends and other villagers, was a major fail in my opinion, and to confound things further, Brendon Gleeson's character, is going to cut his fingers off if his former mate dares to speak to him. Imagine my chagrin when the guy follows through with his threat and starts lopping them off. Apparently it's a comedy drama, give me a break. Anyhow I'll leave it there. Not for me.
Plot Intro - In the spring of 1923, near the end of the Irish Civil War, on the fictional isle of Inisherin (literally "the island of Ireland"), fiddler Colm Doherty abruptly begins ignoring his lifelong best friend and drinking buddy Pádraic Súilleabháin. When a hurt Pádraic presses Colm for an explanation, he says that Pádraic is too dull, and he would rather spend the remainder of his life composing music and doing things for which he will be ed. Pádraic is devastated and refuses to accept the situation, while Colm only becomes more resistant to his old friend's attempts to make amends, eventually giving Pádraic an ultimatum: every time Pádraic talks to him, Colm will cut off one of his own fingers.

George Corro: My specialty is courting ladies in the presence of their husbands.
Giallo #35
It was such fun to see a top draw Giallo film again and also Edwich for that matter. She is simply glorious in everyway in the Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh. If that wasn't enough she is married up with co-star George Hilton, which is like peaches and cream, a perfect match that always delivers.
The films premise revolves around an inheritance, a common giallo trope that always leads to the other common tropes deceit, murder, psychs*xual themes, s*xsploitation, and the plot has more twists than a snake with an itch.
The real star of the show however is the wonderful screenplay, a brilliant murder mystery, with greed for money at the heart of the film.
The conclusion is very satisfying, however from my point of view the only slight drawback was I worked out the main plot twist, but there was still another further twist in the tale/tail to come. Great stuff and very re-watchable for a number of reasons. Recommended for ALL Giallo fans.
Plot Intro - In Vienna, a maniac is killing women with a straight razor. Julie Wardh and her diplomat husband Neil return to the city after time spent in New York City. Julie married Neil to escape her former lover Jean, with whom she had a sadomasochistic relationship that became abusive. On her first night back in Vienna, Julie is delivered a flower bouquet with a sinister note from Jean.
At a high society party, Julie's friend Carol introduces her Australian cousin George. George's and Carol's wealthy uncle has just died, and they are his only heirs. George flirts with Julie, who is unhappy in her marriage to the neglectful Neil. Julie leaves the party after noticing Jean, but Jean confronts her outside, alluding to their past and offering to drive her home. Neil arrives and slaps Jean, who merely laughs and leaves.

Watch a 1970s western film.
When I started watching this Western I thought it was familiar, and when I saw Verna Bloom it all came flooding back. I'd seen this in the dim and distant past, probably in the back end of the 80's or start of the 90's on TV. A classic slow burn affair with themes of friendship, responsibility, freedom, and the complexities of human connection. The Hired Hand follows a man's journey as he returns to his wife after years of wandering, and how their relationship develops.
This Western can certainly be described as lyrical, which is rare in Western films. It gives the film a unique and intriguing vibe that's always compelling.
The ending leaves the audience with a sense of both loss and a lingering sense of the cyclical nature of the life Harry and Arch have chosen.
The Hired Hand is not for everyone as some may see it as slow and boring, but for this Western fan it is an absolute winner. Great to see it again after so many years.
Plot Intro - Harry Collings and Arch Harris are two saddle tramps who have spent seven years wandering through the American Southwest. Along with a younger companion, Dan Griffen, they fish catch the corpse of a small white child from a river. Harry returns the body to the water and it is swept away. The three of them stop off in Del Norte, a ramshackle town in the middle of nowhere that, unbeknowns to the trio, is run by a corrupt boss named McVey. Arch and Dan discuss traveling to California to look for work when Harry abruptly informs them that he has grown weary of purposeless wandering and has decided to return to his home, wife, and daughter that he had left seven years before. Dan leaves the two outside the bar and goes back in to buy another bottle of alcohol. McVey covets Dan's horse and concocts with his thugs a conspiracy to shoot him dead to possess it. Elsewhere and unseen by Harry and Arch, McVey murders Dan, later using the justification story of Dan portrayed as a rapist. Harry and Arch ostensibly accept the tale and leave the town to bury their friend, but they return at dawn seeking revenge. Harry shoots the sleeping murderer McVey in both feet, crippling him. Harry and Arch escape with Dan's horse.

Gandalf: I will not say "Do not weep", for not all tears are an evil.
**This short review is more about my thoughts on the trilogy extended versions .**
This was my best experience watching the Lord of the Rings films, and that was because it was the Blu Ray Extended versions. This is definitely the best way to watch this trilogy, it becomes even more compelling and stunning increasing the fantasy vibe further. In the past I have reviewed the Fellowship and the Two Towers but I didn't complete the Return of the King review, so I'm going back to that short review to rectify the situation.
So with the extra scenes the Trilogy takes on a more realistic feel as some important additional scenes gave more context, were brought back into the films. The scene where Pippin picks up the palantir in the theatrical version always seems out of context. I always think, how did it get there?? Now the additional scene where the group confront Saruman is included and the film flows much better as a consequence. This is true of a number of other scenes, another improvement that springs to mind is the additional scenes in regard to the
Dead Men of Dunharrow, ie The Dead Army, which makes it understandable how the Army, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli all got onto the ship, to get to Gondor. All of these little things (the scene additions), really give all the films more gravitas and a better understanding of how the plot develops. So the Extended versions are well worth seeing and purchasing for those into physical media.
Plot Intro of Return of the King - The hobbit Déagol discovers the One Ring in a river while fishing with his cousin Sméagol. The Ring immediately ensnares Sméagol's mind, and he kills his cousin for it. Corrupted physically and mentally, he retreats into caves below the Misty Mountains and becomes known as Gollum.
Centuries later, during the War of the Ring, Gandalf leads Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and King Théoden of Rohan to Isengard, where they reunite with Merry and Pippin. Gandalf retrieves Saruman's palantír, and the group returns to Edoras to celebrate their victory at Helm's Deep.[a] Pippin looks into the palantír, seeing Sauron and a burning tree. Gandalf deduces that the enemy plans to attack Gondor's capital Minas Tirith; he rides there with Pippin to warn Gondor's corrupt steward, Denethor. On Gandalf's instruction, Pippin triggers the lighting of the beacons to call for help from Rohan.
Frodo, who carries the Ring, and Sam continue their journey towards Mordor, unaware that Gollum, now their guide, plans to betray them and take the Ring for himself. The trio witness the Witch-king of Angmar, lord of the nine Nazgûl, setting off towards Gondor with his army of Orcs. Gollum frames Sam for eating food supplies and desiring the Ring; Frodo is deceived and orders Sam to go home.

Watch a low-budget/DTV western film.
Skinwalker is a film that was released to Dvd and digital channels simultaneously and it shows. It looks very much like a low grade TV film and some of the acting backs that up.
This was the film I chose for the Dtv or low budget Western on the Western 32 challenge and I'm actually glad I did.
The longer the film went on, the more I became invested in the characters and outcome as the gory plot unfolded. Although the story was thin on development and twists, I think I was interested in the concept and film premise which I thought were pretty decent.
There was also a Zombie vibe with the spirit possession, as those scratched by the possessed would become the new incubant of the demonic spirit. From my point of view this film is worth a look.
Oh Eva Hamilton was love.....I mean her role was well acted and elevated the film lol.
The Plot - When two cowboys rob a Native American burial site, a hunter takes the famous Skinwalker, a shapeshifting monster, into an unheard-of world.

Mickey Pearson: There's only one rule in the jungle: when the lion's hungry, he eats!
Another Blu Ray that's sat in my collection for far too long. The opportunity to watch the Gentleman came about on a Friday night as my daughter went to bed and so did my pourly other half. Nine O'Clock, Wine O'Clock and Film O'Clock. What could be better, well probably this film as it happens, and what a great night.
The screen play/script whatever you want to call it, is excellent. There's so many twists and turns and intrigue as this crime caper unfolds. It's a while since I've seen Lockstock and Snatch, which I thoroughly enjoyed but "The Gentleman" might even be the best one. Gloriously stylised quick paced, funny, entralling and extremely entertaining, this film pretty much has it all.
The Gentleman has a veritable feast of British, American and Irish actors,
Matthew McConaughey (Michael "Mickey" Pearson), Tom Lambert (Young Mickey),Charlie Hunnam (Raymond Smith),Henry Golding ("Dry Eye"),Michelle Dockery (Rosalind Pearson),
Jeremy Strong (Matthew Berger),Colin Farrell (Coach), and Hugh Grant (Fletcher).
Hunnam's performance was my favourite, narrowly followed by Farrell's small part, which really elevated the fun factor in the film.
The comic elements also make this a fun ride and I would say it makes The Gentleman very re-watchable as a consequence.
Guy Richie has almost made a masterpiece. Don't sleep on this one.
Plot Intro - Born into poverty in the U.S., Michael "Mickey" Pearson wins a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, where he begins selling marijuana before dropping out and becoming a narcotics baron, building a criminal empire in blood and growing cannabis in labs under the estates of aristocratic landlords who need cash for the upkeep of their stately homes; one such landlord is Lord Pressfield, a duke whose heroin-addicted daughter, Laura, lives in a council estate with other addicts. Many years later, in the face of Great Britain legalizing marijuana, Pearson plans to make his work a legitimate drug business by selling it to someone without any blood on their hands and retiring peacefully with his wife, Rosalind; Pearson's chosen candidate is American billionaire Matthew Berger, and his price is £400 million.

Watch a 1950s western film.
**100th Western watched, that's Westerns plus Spaghetti Westerns that I've logged and rated on Letterboxd**
There will Westerns I've watched that I've forgotten about from the past.
Well Gregory Peck is fast becoming one of my favourite actors. Maybe he has had a few bad acting performances', but I certainly haven't come across them yet. In the first instances I just want to put this simply, The Gunfighter is a crackin' Western. The Gunfighter portrays Jimmy Ringo as a man cast adrift, who wants to through aside his outlaw life and rekindle his previous relationship and estranged son. A man trapped by his own reputation, this film has that fatalistic feeling, that things aren't going to go well for our main protagonist. The kids in the street obsessed with the Gunslinger, the upstart gunfighters wanting to test themselves against the legendary gunman. What can Ringo do to avoid another confrontation?
I found that although the ending was straight forward, it was an emotional one, and the director built the conclusion up nicely as Ringo trys to reconstruct his relationship issues. A western gem.
Plot Intro - A young, reckless cowboy named Eddie deliberately provokes an argument with notorious gunfighter Jimmy Ringo, who is widely known as the fastest draw in the West, making him the perpetual target of every young gunslinger eager to become famous as "the man who shot Ringo". When Eddie draws his pistol, Ringo has no choice but to kill him. Eddie's three brothers seek revenge and pursue Ringo as he leaves town. Ringo ambushes and disarms them, then drives off their horses. He tells them to walk back to town; instead, they obtain fresh horses from a nearby stable and resume their pursuit.
As Ringo rides to the town of Cayenne and settles into a corner of the local saloon, the barkeeper alerts the local marshal, Mark Strett. Strett is a reformed gunslinger and old friend of Ringo's; he urges his friend to leave, since his presence will surely cause undue trouble. Ringo agrees to go as soon as he sees his wife, Peggy, whom he has not seen in eight years, and his son, who doesn't even know he exists. Strett tells him Peggy has changed her surname to conceal their relationship and doesn't wish to see him. Two locals - merchant Jerry Marlowe and local thug Hunt Bromley - both decide to kill Ringo; Marlowe blames him for his son's murder and Bromley wants to be famous.

I was in You Tube and this Making Of Documentary was recommended. As I'll be watching The Outlaw Josey Wales again as part of the Western 32 challenge that I'm undertaking, this came at a great time. The documentary incorporates various anecdotes from cast and footage from behind the scenes. A short and concise documentary which goes straight to the heart of the film, with Clint Eastwood himself telling most of the stories and his love of the movie he created.
If you love this Western, it's a great way to gain additional incite into the film making process of Eastwood, and his directing style.

Watch a western film starring Gregory Peck.
Everytime I watch a western with Gregory Peck starring, I'm mighty impressed, yet there are those who say that he doesn't make a very good cowboy. My experience is to the contrary and he seems to be very versatile in the roles he plays. This could be why he's a Hollywood legend.
Yellow Sky is no exception as he plays his lead role to such aplomb. He's ably ed by other great actors Richard Widmark (Dude), Anne Baxter (Mike), Robert Arthur (Bull Run)
John Russell (Lengthy) and Harry Morgan as Half Pint.
Yellow Sky is fairly action packed and also has some nice character studies, character developments and plot direction changes.
The film explores the internal struggle within a bank robber gang, specifically between Stretch who tries to protect the young woman Mike, and Dude (Richard Widmark), a ruthless member of the gang who wants to exploit the situation in the ghost town of Yellow Sky and take the gold held by Mike and her Grandfather James Barton.
Thematically Yellow Sky is fairly deep as the film explores themes of redemption, loyalty, and the struggle between morality and violence in the harsh environment of the American West.
Peck's character James "Stretch" Dawson goes through quite a moral journey as his real character comes to the fore, resulting in a complete change in his life direction. An uplifting gritty western adventure, just the way they should be.
Plot Intro - In 1867, a gang led by James "Stretch" Dawson (Gregory Peck) robs a bank and, chased by soldiers, choose to cross the salt flats of Death Valley. After an arduous journey, collapsing from heat and dehydration, the outlaws come upon a ghost town called Yellow Sky and its only residents, a tough young woman called Mike (Anne Baxter) and her gold prospector grandfather (James Barton). Stretch is attracted to Mike. While the men recover from their ordeal at a spring, gambler Dude (Richard Widmark) snoops around. Dude tells the others that the old man is mining gold, but Stretch is unimpressed. The next day, Mike and Grandpa take to the hills. A confrontation between Stretch and Dude over the leadership of the gang is interrupted by Mike shooting at them. However, when Grandpa is hit in the leg by a ricochet, Mike surrenders.

Watch a western film directed by Sergio Leone.
First viewing and yet another very good Leone spaghetti western outing, although this western should probably be described as a Zapata Western. Firstly I thoroughly enjoyed the film but it's probably the worst out of his five Westerns. It just shows how high the bar is where his western filmography is concerned.
Rod Steiger plays Juan Miranda, an amoral Mexican peon leading a band of outlaws composed mostly of his own children. Steiger is so compelling with his quirky emotional performance elevating the film, much in the Tuco mode.
He does not care about the revolution at first, but becomes involved after his encounter with John.
James Coburn is John (Seán) H. Mallory, a Fenian revolutionary and explosives expert. Wanted for killing British forces in Ireland, he flees to Mexico where he ends up getting involved in another revolution.
The chemistry between the two is clear and is at the centre of the films strength, as their acrimonious relationship develops.
After neither of them have an initial interest in the ensuing revolution, they rebel against the government and become heroes of the Mexican Revolution. This comes to fruition after a massacre and their motives change from financial to revolutionary, as a consequence, and their bond intensifies. All emotional and stirring stuff, that Leone masters so well.
Vive la revolution? But at what expense??
Plot Intro - In Revolution-torn 1913 Mexico, outlaw Juan Miranda leads a family of bandits, robs a coach of wealthy men and r*pes a female enger who insulted him. ing by on a motorcycle is John H. Mallory, an Irish Republican explosives expert, who works in Mexico as a silver prospector. Juan asks John (who initially states his name as "Seán") to help him rob the Mesa Verde National Bank. After John refuses, Juan frames him for the murder of his employer and several soldiers, making him a wanted criminal and offering to "protect" him in exchange for his help. John reluctantly agrees but escapes on the way to Mesa Verde.
Arriving in the city before Juan, John makes with revolutionaries led by physician Dr. Villega and agrees to use his explosives in their service. When Juan arrives, John inducts him into the revolutionaries' ranks. The bank is hit as part of an orchestrated attack on the Mexican army. Juan, interested only in money, is shocked to find that the bank has no funds and is instead being used by the army as a political prison. After freeing several prisoners, Juan inadvertently becomes a "glorious hero of the revolution".

Watch a western film starring Charles Bronson.
This was another fun western ride from my Western 32 challenge. It's Spaghetti Western meets the Orient, and it created a mighty fine mix. The two main protaganists Bronson (Link Stuart) and Toshiro Mifune (Kuroda Jubei) commanded the screen so well as formidable Western characters and Alain Delon (Gauche) was one arrogant and sinister bad guy.
Bronson and Mifune team up and after some initial teething problems become a daunting partnership.
There is an east meets west theme where the film's central conflict is the clash of cultures between the American cowboys and the Japanese samurai, with a stolen sword serving as a symbol of the cultural divide.
American outlaw (Stuart) is betrayed by French bandit Gauche (Alain Delon) who steals the sword and leaves him for dead, forcing him to cooperate with the samurai to retrieve it.
The outlaw and the samurai develop a grudging respect for each other as they pursue the traitor. They will need to lure Gauche to retrieve the loot and sword. What method will they ister?? I bet your thinking a lady has something to do with it.
It's gonna get mighty messy.
Plot Intro - Link Stuart and Gauche are leaders of a gang of bandits who decide to rob $400,000 from a train. There, a Japanese ambassador is on his way to Washington, carrying a ceremonial tachi sword meant as a gift for the president. Gauche steals the gold-handled tachi and kills one of the ambassador's samurai bodyguards. By Gauche's order, the bandits double-cross Link by throwing dynamite into the train car he is in, leaving him for dead. Before Gauche leaves, the surviving samurai bodyguard, Kuroda, asks his name and swears to kill him.
After Link is nursed back to health, the ambassador instructs him to assist Kuroda in tracking down Gauche. Kuroda has one week to kill Gauche and recover the sword; if he fails, both Kuroda and the ambassador will have to commit harakiri for allowing the tachi to be stolen and leaving the dead samurai unavenged. Link reluctantly agrees to help Kuroda. Once they set off in pursuit of the gang, Link repeatedly attempts to elude Kuroda, to no avail.

"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown," Lawrence Walsh (Joe Mantell) to Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson)
Chinatown has been on my radar since I noticed it as one of Keith Grubb's favourite four films. Hence in the back end of last year (November time) I bought the Blu Ray from Amazon. It's sat in my collection until I picked it for a Saturday night viewing with my partner and what a treat.
Chinatown is top tier Crime Thriller material. Compelling from the very start to finish as the intriguing plot unfolds, and the acting (Jack Nicholson on top of his game) and directing is top quality to match the screen play.
The film follows detective Jake Gittes as he uncovers corruption in the Los Angeles water department, and explores the manipulation of water by wealthy oligarchs for personal gain.
Thematically Chinatown tells of the dishonesty of authority figures and suggests that the very notion of an honest, trustworthy leader is a myth. The film also implies the Corruption of the American Dream and
the helplessness of common people in the Face of Evil.
All you Letterboxd guys and girls who don't like or don't believe conspiracy theories exist, don't need to apply where Chinatown is concerned.
The conclusion is brilliantly rendered in the context of the film, regarding maniplation and domination of others, but is fairly horrible and weird. This may detract slightly from the film for some.
However in relatively recent times you'd be hard pressed to find a crime thriller to rival Chinatown. A masterpiece? Maybe.
Plot Intro - In 1930s Los Angeles, a woman calling herself Evelyn Mulwray hires private investigator J. J. "Jake" Gittes to trail her husband Hollis, the chief engineer at the Department of Water and Power. Gittes photographs Hollis in the company of a young woman and the pictures make their way into the Post-Record, exposing their apparent affair. Gittes is then confronted by the real Evelyn Mulwray, who threatens to sue him. He concludes that the imposter was using him to discredit Hollis.
Gittes crosses paths with his former colleague, LAPD Lieutenant Lou Escobar, when Hollis's corpse is found in a reservoir. He discovers that huge quantities of water are being released from the reservoir each night, despite the fact that LA is in the midst of a drought. Water Department Security Chief Claude Mulvihill warns him off, and Gittes has his nose slashed by one of Mulvihill's henchmen.

Fritz Lang's the Big Heat is brutal, compelling and darkly comedic in turns. Glen Ford and Gloria Grahame what a combo!!
They don't however act together in this film for sometime, but when they do the chemistry and classic cinema vibe comes to fruition.
The plot is very slick, and fast moving and the brutality warrants a 15 UK certificate. Scalding hot coffee in the face has to be the reason for this. This scene has to be the most shocking in film Noir, and depicts the heartlessviolent nature of the mob.
I can't think of another Noir I've seen that's a 15, normally 12 is the highest. Anyway back to the film, where Lang provides one of his top tier film Noir's. Plenty twists and turns in the plot as Glen Ford's character Sgt. Dave Bannion fights against a corrupt system that extends into the police department, driven by the brutal murder of his wife at the hands of the mob.
Corruption, revenge, the destructive nature of violence, the blurred lines between good and evil are all themes in The Big Heat, not to mention the cheapness of life and fatalism.
A rollercoaster of a Noir with a bittersweet conclusion, and Lee Marvin (Vincent Stone) is the epitome of menace personified. Don't miss it. Gripping.
Plot Intro - Homicide detective Sergeant Dave Bannion, of the Kenport Police Department, is called on to investigate the suicide of a fellow officer, Tom Duncan. Duncan leaves behind a letter addressed to the district attorney. His wife, Bertha, finds the envelope and locks it away in her safe deposit box. She tells Bannion that her husband was depressed because he was in ill health.
The mistress of the late cop, Lucy Chapman, contradicts Mrs. Duncan, telling Sgt. Bannion that Tom Duncan had not been in ill health, and had no reason to kill himself, but had recently agreed to a divorce with his wife. The next day, Lieutenant Ted Wilks is under pressure from "upstairs" to close the case, and orders Bannion to drop his investigation. Lucy Chapman is found strangled to death, her body covered with cigarette burns. Bannion receives threatening calls at his home. Well I was pleasantly surprised by this bowl of Spaghetti, Django Kill....If you Live, Shoot (what a crazy title) was a fun ride from start to finish. Not only was the story good but there was little side stories developing, dark comedy, greed for gold, brutality, revenge and a good ending. A spaghetti western I wouldn't think twice about watching again.
This was the seventh Tomas Milian film in total and my fourth Spaghetti Western. Looking back at the other three Spaghetti Westerns I've enjoyed his performances in everything I've seen him. This however might be the best. Yeah I know it's dubbed but his facial expressions and posturing really comes across in the quirky aspects and the action sequences.
Django Kill is a crazy whacked out western adventure without question.
Initially Django is betrayed during a gold robbery and left for dead, he then seeks revenge on those who wronged him.
The movie also features a half-breed (mixed race) bandit, a gang of homos*xual cowboys, lynchings, and a sadistic priest. To be honest that's just the half of it. There's backstabbing, double crossing, more gun fighting for gold, revenge (I think I mentioned that) and within this our anti-hero "The Stranger" appears to have a moral com and wants to do the right thing. Mind you that doesn't stop him having a fling with another man's wife right in front of his face. Patrizia Valturri playing Elizabeth Hagerman is the more than willing participate, who is actually released from her locked room to seduce the stranger while her husband double crosses the stranger. Yeah it's all nonstop crazy action and I absolutely loved it. There's a plot running through all of this too believe it or not. Almost a top tier spaghetti western in the opinion of yours truly.
Additional quote : Oaks: [after The Stranger tries to shoot him] Tough luck, half breed! Guns don't shoot with no bullets inside!
Plot Intro - A pair of Indian medicine men encounter a wounded bandit, the Stranger, crawling out from a mass grave; they nurse him back to health. During his recovery, he re an assault on a Wells Fargo covered wagon guarded by US Army troops. The Stranger, his partner Oaks, and their gang killed the troops, caught swimming in a river, and stole a strongbox containing bags of powdered gold from the wagon. However, Oaks and the white of the gang betrayed the Stranger and the Mexican bandits, and forced them to dig their grave before gunning them down. In the present, the Indians inform the Stranger that they have smelted his share of the gold into bullets, and that they wish to be his companions so that he can tell them about the happy hunting ground.

The Power of the Dog is an excellent adaptation of Thomas Savage's 1967 novel.
It's a story about the destructive power of toxic masculinity. The title comes from a Bible verse, and the film explores how Phil Burbank's (Benedict Cumberbatch) abusive behavior destroys those around him.
TPOTD may not appeal to your average Western fan, but this Western fan liked it. It's a great twist on what we would expect the subject matter to be for a western, and it's portrayed so well in this film.
The cinematography, acting, story and outcome are all top notch, with Cumberbatch's performance being on another level, but why not 4.5 or 5 stars you ask. It was extremely compelling and I was wanting to know where the story would go, and it changed tack too which was good, but in comparison to the classic Westerns I know and love it didn't quite reach that level.
It's not on a par with, The Outlaw Josey Wales, The Wild Bunch, Tombstone, Rio Bravo or The Big Country.
That being said it is a mighty fine Modern Western/Neo Western and would rank high on any Western list post 2000. Also with the age of time I may come to like TPOTD even more but currently it only has a short history, and I probably need more viewings to get it engrained into my psyche.
In regard to the performances, the rest if the cast produce good or great performances. I was particularly impressed with Kirsten Dunst as Rose Gordon as she deteriorates into alcoholism, which she depicts so well. She seems to have matured as an actress with the ing years, and also plays Peter Gordon's mother so well, ie they have a good mother and son bond. Speaking of which, Kodi Smith-Mhee plays his creepy almost demented character Peter Gordon so well, bringing a sinister vibe to the proceedings. How will his friendship end with Phil Burbank??
The Power of the Dog is proof that there are still good Modern Westerns that can have a different spin, and that there are also some decent Westerns lurking on Netflix to be watched.
TPOTD is certainly a great addition to the Western cannon as a whole and is not to be missed.
Plot Intro- In 1925 Montana, wealthy ranch-owning brothers Phil and George Burbank meet widow and inn owner Rose Gordon during a cattle drive. The kindhearted George is quickly taken with Rose, but the coarse and volatile Phil dislikes her, believing she only wants George's money. Phil also belittles her teenage son Peter, deriding him as weak and effeminate.
George and Rose marry and she moves into the Burbank ranch house while Peter attends medical school. George organizes a dinner party with his parents and the governor and pressures Rose into a piano performance. George reveals that Phil was a brilliant Classics student at Yale, in contrast to his rough nature. Shaken by Phil's earlier belittlement, Rose is unable to perform. Humiliated and upset by Phil's behavior, Rose starts drinking, becoming an alcoholic by the time Peter arrives home for a break from school. Phil and his men taunt Peter, and he isolates himself in his room, where he dissects a rabbit he has caught.
