*Watched with James Gunn commentary

Seen this probably half a dozen times but my main takeaway from this viewing was just how vulnerable Chris Pratt's performance is. He's clearly become a massive Hollywood star since this was released and carries himself as such in his recent films but here, there's still an air of unsureness that I think really elevates the character/film.

Watched this with commentary to potentially get an insight into how Gunn might approach Superman and I won't lie, this got me excited for the summer release.

Naked Gun 33⅓ may not live up to the strength of its predecessors but it still delivers exactly what is expected of the series, absurd slapstick and the deadpan brilliance of Leslie Nielsen.

It’s silly and self-aware but still manages to retain an overwhelming amount of nonsense that only the talents of the Zucker brothers could pull off. That said, I watched this is in preparation for the return of Naked Gun this summer and I'm really hoping (cautiously optimistic) that Akiva Schaffer can pick up the mantle and run with it

If you're in the mood for throwback gags and a healthy dose of slapstick, you could do a lot worse than Frank Drebin's final chapter but it's easily the weakest of the trilogy and the formula begins to wear thin.

Nice of Steve Soderbergh to remind us all of the itch that a 90 minute, tongue-in-cheek, spy movie can scratch.

Crisp and clean performances all around here, guided by an incredibly experienced director that clearly knows how to handle the genre.

Not sure if the film ever really finds fifth gear but it's well focused and knows exactly what it's trying to achieve, particularly on a thematic level.

Black Bag
's inherent quality is a painful reminder of the usual spy-thriller dross that Netflix force down people's throats on a weekly basis.

I'm not the target audience for this, never played the game and I don't have any kids BUT what I do have... is an incredibly juvenile sense of humour which came in very handy when watching this.

Jack Black turns the dial all the way up to eleven with this one as he leaves it all on the stage for A Minecraft Movie and I'd like to say that this wouldn't have worked without him but I'm not entirely convinced that the movie really works at all, at least as a whole.

Has it been wildly successful (commercially) and received a positive reaction from the Minecraft fanbase? ✔️

Does it leave a meaningful mark on the audience through it's message and/or visual storytelling ❌ (unless you count getting pelted in the head by a frozen chicken during the screening)

How you feel about this film will likely come down to how much weight you put into either of the above questions but by the general Video Game Movie standards, this has certainly served its purpose and I'm sure we'll be pounded with sequels for the foreseeable.

A made-for-TV film wrapped in a Hollywood dressing that provides some dumb but forgettable fun.

Just like his previous projects, Happy Death Day and Freaky, Landon seems to work best when he has a high-concept that he needs to translate on screen and for the most part, he delivers yet again.

Some interesting cinematography and slick visuals hold together a pretty flimsy premise that runs the risk of taking itself too seriously but by the end of a swift 95 minute runtime, the film finds the correct tone and nails the landing.

If you can get past the many (many) contrivances and stilted dialogue, this has the potential to be a midnight movie gem that will be sure to leave audiences yelling 'Yahtzee!' as the credits roll.

PS - When did Dublin become such a popular stand in for [insert random American city]? It's a very strange but oddly engaging experience to be watching a film that suddenly cuts to streets and buildings I'm very familiar with.

First time watch for me and to be honest, I got exactly what I was expecting - Ambitious production design that largely holds up and kept me entertained throughout.

Unfortunately the acting of our titular character is severely lacking and while she certainly looks the part, fails to carry the film.

Arnie steps in to save today but I think his constant undermining of the protagonist ultimately does the film more damage than good.

For those who like a bit of mid-eighties fantasy fare, the retro charm alone should suffice but don't go in expecting much more.

Considering what Star Wars has become since it can began working for 'The Mouse', I should probably be a bit more grateful for a film where it's creator was (at the very least) allowed to explore his vision without interference - If only George Lucas hadn't first made me sit through two of the most painfully tedious films ever put to celluloid.

That said, the final chapter works and Lucas finally manages to deliver that Space Opera feel, so sorely missing from the first two chapters.

This holds up much better than I was expecting, especially as I being much more annoyed at this when I left the cinema (upon its initial release).

It's incredibly formulaic and follows the path carved by the previous two installments pretty closely but nobody (at least these days) watching Final Destination is looking for something original - We want creative deaths, underdeveloped characters and terrible dialogue, which Final Destination 3 delivers.

Surprisingly, this features some of the best acting in the series and Mary Elizabeth Winstead does a good job anchoring the entire film.

After 25 years since the first chapter was released, I think it's pretty fair to say that the Final Destination series has successfully carved out it's own corner in the Horror genre (which is no mean feat) and I'm glad that the Bloodlines release has made me revisit these once more.

After nearly a quarter of a century, I've finally managed to cross Episode 2 off my list. Due to its abhorrent reputation, I never had much of an interest in checking this out but with all the Revenge of the Sith anniversary hullaballoo last month, the time felt right.

I was surprised to see that this was not as horrendous as I was expecting, largely due to my preemptive Phantom Menace viewing, which really softened me up to the dull and substandard nature of the prequels.

Being completely honest, I didn't find this much worse than its predecessor. Sure it's more dull/boring but it's also far less irritating, which I attribute to the massive reduction in a certain Gungan's screen time and the replacement of Jake Lloyd. That said, it's very hard to find much positives here as the entire project continues to lack the heart, depth, and emotional resonance that made the original trilogy so delightful.

To end on a less negative note, I felt the whole Dooku lightsaber battle at the end was pretty well choreographed and a big step up from the previous Darth Maul snore fest.

(Could have easily gone another 25 years without seeing this and would only recommend to completionists)

It's hard to isolate a single chapter in the ever growing anthology of Star Wars canon, which is probably a saving grace because outside of that entire universe, this is absolute trash.

Thankfully I never grew up as a Star Wars fan because if I did and this is what I was served up after a 16 year hiatus, I think I would have been physically sick.

The entire prequel trilogy has been dragged over the coals for the better part of the last two decades and there's very little left to say (Mr. Plinkett covered it pretty extensively), so I'll keep my criticisms to a minimum.

It's like watching a man in his mid-fifties playing with toys in a sandbox. There's very little rhyme or reason to anything that's going on (except maybe what's in his head) and the film doesn't have a target audience - Is it aimed at little children? Is it aimed at the adults that had grown up with Star Wars? Who knows! Certainly not George Lucas anyway.

Best part of the entire film is the masterful Duel of the Fates theme and it's the only aspect of this film that comes anywhere close to the quality of the original trilogy but really only serves as a reminder of how far this franchise had fallen.

My favorite aspect was the sound design which is ridiculously well done, on every single level. Ludwig Goransson is the true star of the show for me.

Couldn't help but compare this to From Dusk Till Dawn while watching but I recognize that the tone and focus are completely different.

The issues in the North of Ireland are far more complex than most non-Irish persons would be expected to understand but the film embraces these intricacies and paints a multifaceted, vibrant and (most importantly) entertaining story that's hard not to recommend.

It's heavy stylization and fresh-faced approach to storytelling is very remeniscent of Danny Boyle's mid nineties classic Trainspotting but that's not to say that this ever feels derivative, the opposite in fact.

Quick paced, funny and soulful - a film that will no doubt stand the test of time (unlike that cunt Sharon Osbourne).

Based solely on how much I enjoyed last year's Longlegs, which really hit home for me on rewatch at the start of the year, I couldn't help but be a little excited for Perkins' next project. That said, the trailer had me more than a little concerned that Perkins was switching up his tone and this might not work - I think in the end my concerns were justified.

Big positive first, Perkins' aesthetic is still stunning. His framing and camera direction are distinct and captivating, which ultimately makes The Monkey a bit of a bittersweet experience.

While I broadly enjoyed Perkins' exploration of the surreal levels of grief/trauma he experienced in his personal life, I think it's fair to say this wasn't without its toll. The film is too heavily anchored by its themes and the story felt a little lost within the characters. While I chalk that down to the difficulty that must come with approaching something so introspectively, it still left me feeling a little underwhelmed when the credits rolled.

His approach to the themes of death and mortality were still interesting and maybe it deepens with a rewatch. I'll revisit this down the road, now that my expectations have been suitably lowered.

My first watch of this has been a long time coming and I'm glad to have gotten a big Scorsese blind spot off my back.

It's crudely made in parts but Scorsese still finds a way to express his artistic flair in the right spaces. To be fair, that rawness is what makes Mean Streets so interesting and while the story feels a little unfocused, two very strong performances in Keitel and De Niro keep it engaging throughout.

Tarantino (at least early QT) has clearly taken influence from the work Scorsese puts out here - I like when sometimes a random movie clicks something into place that causes my own film lexicon to make a little more sense.

This is exactly what you would expect from a movie where it's protagonist is called Roger Mortis.

A lot of fun with some amazing practical effects - that Chinese butcher shop scene was the stuff of B-movie gold.

Strangely beautiful ending to boot.

While I feel like Shane Black's magic is certainly missing from this, there's still an undeniable chemistry between our two leads that keeps this formula from feeling stale.

I like the addition of Rene Russo but Donner's decision to axe the scene with Sam the dog chilling with Riggs' new rottweiler is absolutely unacceptable.

Sweeping landscapes and gorgeous settings help to capture this strange blend of romance and fantasy.

While the film may be set in 13th century Europe there's a distinct American feel to this film which is probaly heightened by the distractingly 80's soundtrack.

There's also some serious horsemanship at play here that I found to be utterly compelling and a genuine reason to revisit this unique view into 1980's cinema.

My first rewatch of this and I'm happy that it still holds up with my initial impressions.

Comic book movies, particularly those of the white-bread MCU variety, are one of the few genres where I think fan service is both expected and acceptable (at least it's usually ed by reams of source material) but when you add in a character whose most distinguisable trait is fourth wall breaking, it's just going to be too much for some people.

So I get it, some people just really did not like this movie.

However, anyone that's done their time with comicbook movies over the last couple of decades, through both the good f̶i̶l̶m̶s times and the bad, will probably find something here for them.

This genre is a well that I've repeatedly come back to since my teens and will probably continue to do so. With that in mind, Deadpool & Wolverine is a nice addition to the pile and does a great job at bookending a specific era in the ever expanding world of our superhero friends.

I always have time for a film that tries something a little different in such an over-saturated subgenre but The Night Eats the World doesn't quite hit the mark.

A story such as this requires an excellent lead performance to carry the audience through to the end but Anders Danielsen Lie is unable to reach that level and instead delivers a limp execution that massively lets the film down.

Zombie lovers should definitely give this a watch, for posteritys sake if nothing else, but this was very much a one and done for me.

I'm not sure how but I'd never actually managed to sit down and watch this from start to finish. More fool me, this was great craic and a worthy St. Patrick's Day watch.

An absurd, space opera that plays into all the clichés imaginable - outrageous costumes, over-the-top performances and a celebration of everything campy and colourful.

Hard to log a review and not mention the unforgettable soundtrack, composed by British rock band Queen, which is easily the most iconic aspect of this adventure. Bombastic and exaggerated, just like the film, this has withstood the test of time and remains the single most important foundational element of Flash Gordon's cult status.

Almost as important is Max Von Sydow's earnest perfomance of our antagonist, Ming The Emperor. As always, Von Sydow brings a certain level of gravitas to the role that compliments the utter nonsensical plot and I found him to be the ideal counterpart to our endearingly simplistic, titular character.

The movie may be 45 years old but the purposeful exaggeration of nearly every aspect of this movie, which earned the film it's highly-celebrated cult status in the first place, makes this an enduring piece of cinema history.

Happy St. Patricks Day everybody! ☘️

This is my second Jalmari Helander movie in the last three months and I genuninely can't wait to see what he creates next.

Unlike the much more contemplative Rare Exports, Helander wears his love for Tarantino and Grindhouse movies on his sleeve with Sisu. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this in previous reviews but as a man in his mid-thirties, I love watching this new generation of directors that clearly grew up watching QT movies and obviously see Tarantino's style as the ultimate way to tell stories, particularly tales of violent revenge.

While, yes this is full of over the top violence, not a single frame feels gratuitous. The intensity and creativity of the brutality on screen never lets up and Helander has crafted a throwback to the action heroes of old, while maintaining its authenticity and without leaning into pastiche. This is an incredibly difficult needle to thread and one that so many directors fail at (I'm looking at you David Leitch).

I could wax lyrical about the actions scenes all day but what elevates Sisu above the pile is the combination of all of the above with some truly beautiful and atmospheric cinematography. Obviously helped by Finland's enrapturing natural landscape but regardless, there's some frames in this that could be moved straight into The Louvre.

I know that this film won't be everyones cup of tea - minimal plot and maxium violence is never an overly accessible recipe but for anyone who does appreciate those ingredients, this is going to hit and it's going to hit hard!

A great sequel that correctly focuses on what made the first chapter so great - the amazing chemistry between Riggs and Murtagh.

Donner isn't afraid to inject his political leanings into his work and consequently creates some truly worthwile antagonists that you still love to hate, 35+ years down the road.

If memory serves me correctly, the film series continues on a downward trajectory from here on out but the first two installments are easily some of the best buddy cop/action movies ever made.

This was built around the long awaited return of Linda Hamilton to the franchise and credit where it's due, she's still got it.

There's not too many women in their mid-sixties floating about Hollywood, let alone getting cast in action roles, so Hamilton really had giant expectations resting on her shoulders and for the most part she duely delivered. Everything else around her though, not so much.

Excluding the horrendous ret-conning prologue, the first act is pretty solid. Standard Terminator fare but with a decent car-chase scene that culminates with Hamilton arriving and swinging her massive dick about the place. The film slowly declines from there.

Natalia Reyes is woefully out of her depth and struggles for the entire project but Mackenzie Grace is pretty solid and I enjoyed the 'augmented human' addition to the franchise. Arnie is used sparingly, relative to the other chapters, which is another creative decision I agree with and I didn't dislike our new Terminator model, the REV-9.

However, even with Tim Miller, fresh off the back of Deadpool, getting most of the little details right, he never manages to bring it all together and the film does not equal the sum of its parts.

I don't blame anybody specifically for delivering yet another mediocre installment, the story had run it's course after Judgement Day and for something truly creative to come out of it, so much would have to be left behind and that's just not how giant movie franchises work.

So I guess for now we'll have to continue watching the vultures pick at the rotten carcass of the T-800 until there's nothing left but an empty metal shell.

*Theatrical Cut*

First watched this directly after seeing Aliens (also for the first time) and I've never been able to forget the feeling of unbridled rage boil up inside me when the film opened with the death of Newt. While I'll never be able to forgive Alien³ for that, I can choose to move past it and instead focus on the bits I do enjoy.

I love the prison planet setting and the general Fincher aesthetic of the film, the nihilistic atmosphere is a great change of pace from the previous installments.

Weaver delivers a solid perfomance ed by a young(er) Charles Dance and they work well with the hammy, mostly British, actors covering the ing characters.

Strangely, while some the practical effects are excellent, it's blended with some truly atrocious CGI which taints the entire film in that regard.

It's been 30+ years since this was released and we've seen plenty of mediocre chapters in the series that help put Fincher's much maligned feature debut into context and for that I'll just about raise my rating but the truth is, the emotional wounds this caused me on first viewing have never fully healed and I'm starting to think that they never will.

A film that has all the hallmarks of a director that has been left completely off the leash and while I'm happy to see Bong Joon Ho get to work with such freedom, ultimately the film suffers for it.

Ho dives straight into some of his favourite themes, of which we've seen him explore in better films, but loses sight of the overall message Mickey 17 is attempting to send.

However, I really enjoyed the performances - Ruffalo and all. I also liked the aesthetics and I even enjoyed the weird ”native fauna" but the self-indulgent lack of focus throughout was just too much of a pretty frustrating experience for me.

I think this might have suffered from me being a little to hyped to see what what was next from a director with films I hold in high esteem, such as Memories of Murder and Parasite, but this felt like a lesser version of Snowpiercer.

I'll come back in a few years for a rewatch (maybe when Kenneth Marshall doesn't feel all too real?) and hopefully I'll have a better time.

Obviously the MCU output has been pretty mediocre as of late, so expectations for Brave New World were suitably low.

Even so, this was a pretty tiresome affair.

It did remind me of how much I enjoyed the animated TV show, The Incredible Hulk, from the nineties - largely because this would have been a fantastic double episode. For anyone who may be unfamiliar, each episode was only 20 minutes long.

That's about the strength of this film, cut this down to forty minutes and you've got a solid story. What on Earth did Feige think he was doing with the other 1hr and 20 minutes??

Serious made-for-TV vibes that just permeates across the entire production and should have probably never even seen the light of day, let alone a cinema screen.

I'll hold out hope for Fantastic Four: First Steps but I still maintain that Marvel are floundering and it's James Gunn's time to shine - Superman to save the day!

From the silliness of its absurdist comedy to its exploration of intergenerational trauma, the Daniels cover an insane amount of ground in this text, without so much as missing a beat.

Massive concepts, all anchored by a reminder that, despite the endless possibilities and paths we could take, the simplest things such as love, family, and human connection, are what truly matter.

I don't throw out 5 star ratings all that often but I knew from my first viewing that this was going all the way to the top and even though the worst food delivery experience of my life almost spoiled this rewatch, I don't think it deserves anything less.

Really enjoyed this year's 'Best Animated Film'.

Like everyone else, I thought Wild Robot was an absolute lock but having now watched this, I think they made the right call. The film is complexity that dresses itself up as simplicity and it left me pondering long after the credits had finished rolling.

The actual animation work didn't blow me away but considering the shoestring budget, I've no issues with the simplicity and again, I think it feeds into the film, as a whole.

Truth be told, I've raised both a cat and dog together for almost the last fifteen years, so this was always gonna work for me.

With all the hustle and bustle surrounding the Oscar nominations over the last few weeks, it's refreshing to sit down and watch a decent popcorn flick.

I don't mean any disrespect but this is essentially a mediocre Black Mirror episode turned into a movie. Which, FWIW, is 100% up my alley and could gladly watch much more of these.

Performances are pretty solid across the board with Sophie Thatcher leading the line well and Nepobaby Quaid doing his usual schtick. The incredibly predictable nature of events was my biggest disappointment but I think this film is just trying to have a bit of fun, so I can't be overly critical.

After a tremendous 2024, Horror has made a really solid start to 2025, fingers crossed for the rest of the year🤞

I've been thinking lately that, over the last decade and a half or so, it's likely we've seen the Golden Era of Marvel Comics movies (maybe comic book movies in general?) come and go.

Or at the very least I've become a bit drained of them, so I find myself watching them with less and less enthusiasm, foregoing trips to the theatre and even failing to actually watch a couple.

Wanted to rank this potential 'Golden Era' before I become a (completely) bitter ol' curmudgeon and cease watching these altogether.
