★★★

Reasonable sci-fi thriller.

This is fine, although it doesn’t quite go in the interesting directions that the concept could possibly take you and instead turns into a fairly conventional thriller with a romantic edge. Anything challenging or thought-provoking about the time travel element takes a back seat.

It’s entertaining enough, though, and at an hour and a half it’s the perfect length for a film that could have quite easily been boring, given how repetitive it is in structure.

I enjoyed the performances - Jake Gylennhaal is good as the soldier who is trying to work out where he is and why he is being sent on these missions into the past - and I would like to see Michelle Monaghan in something where she is not simply the girlfriend or wife of a main character, and is given a bit more to do.

The ending, while you could see it coming a mile off, was pretty satisfactory and for the most part this entertaining but slightly empty film worked very well.
