Waktu Maghrib

2023

★★ Watched

Watched this in preparation for Waktu Maghrib 2! Honestly, this was pretty standard, just like most Javanese and religious-centered Indonesian horror films. I wouldn't say it's terrible, but it’s not good either. It plays everything super safe. The scares feel cheap and overused and the pacing is painfully slow. Even though the runtime isn’t that long, it feels like forever. None of the characters stand out, so there’s really no one to care about, which eventually makes the emotional moments…

The Deceased

An Indonesian supernatural horror that doesn’t try too hard and delivers exactly what it promises. Compared to other local horror films, there’s nothing particularly groundbreaking here, it’s either witchcraft or religious horror, as usual. That being said, it’s still pretty entertaining from start to finish. It nails the camp, the scares work, and the “death train” concept really gives off Final Destination vibes. The scares aren’t overly exaggerated, and I actually found myself fairly invested in the story. Acting-wise, everyone really delivered, solid performances all around.

Flat, boring, unengaging. I waited over a year for this and was disappointed. This is another case where a film with a unique concept never managed to grow into something bigger. It's like taking a good short film and stretch it out needlessly. The experience of going through 'spooky' internet videos and playing it constantly evoke a good sense of discomfort, but it can't quite make for a compelling narrative. The story may be relatable to some audience but it's clear I'm not part of those audience.

A beautifully shot but aggressively basic psychological horror film. There's some genuine tension, haunting score, great use of location, and the lead performance is great as well. You can feel the loneliness that the lead character feels and the language barriers really help induce this feeling of isolation. However, just like any modern paranoia horror film, it feels like a short film content stretched into a feature. The entire film is basically a trope because it feels too familiar that…
