So.... I've at long last, seen Dune: Part Two and I gotta say..... kinda not as good as I thought it would be. I guess compared to the colossal level of hype I had, I don't know how I could of thought it could top that. Maybe I get too hyped for movies and when it's not what I thought it would be it somewhat lets me down, I don't really know. It for sure wasn't what I thought it would be, I mean it basically was, but it didn't work for me like I thought. Maybe I'm just being ungrateful for the movie, I probably am, but I can't help but feel a certain itch for something different... yeah I'm being a bit harsh on it. It was for sure an amazing movie, don't get me wrong and with time to think on it and rewatch it I'll probably come to fully love it the way I wanted to. But it's still so good anyways.
Everything about the first movie in of technicals, is here and way better! The cgi and visuals of the movie are some of the absolute best ever yet again, the sound design and score are still amazing and while I liked the score for the first one better, it stills works and fits the world of Dune perfectly, it just worked a bit better in the first. And I gotta get this out of the way real quick.... the first one for me is better. I know, I know, big L take, but that's just how I feel as of now, and again, as I sit with the movie it could get better and sur the first.
Now to continue the good of the movie, the acting is WAY better in this than the first. Timothée Chalamet is the best performance in the movie, he has so much more to do in this movie and the role is far more demanding of him this time and he really delivers. Paul as a character is also better and far more complex in this one and he conveys everything that Paul is dealing with in such an amazing way, really great acting, the best I've seen from him. Zendaya is great too, Chani was obviously not in much of the first one, but she gets a lot of moments to shine in this and Zendaya brings so much to the character. She's the last person we see in the movie and she's great in that final shot, I felt all her emotions in that scene, and through all of the movie! Austin Butler is not Elvis in this, he's something far better and far more terrifying! Really loved him in this and while he didn't get a whole lot of screentime, he did so much with what he got, although I would've liked to see a bit more of him. His scene in the arena was just so PEAK! One of the best scenes in the movie! All the other actors from Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem (so funny in this movie bro), Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken, Léa Seydoux, and Dave Bautista were all so great in their roles! Some of them like Florence Pugh, I wish we got a few more scenes because of what happens at the end, could've been a bit more impactful, but not much of a problem.
Real quick before I talk about the story, I just wanna say that Denis Villeneuve's directing is PEAK as with all his movies, forgot to say that earlier. So the story.... there's a lot that happened in this movie and I won't go through all of it cuz I've already rambled on for so long and because I'm still fully processing it. So it was for sure an amazing story, with Paul's arc being pretty well done, but I kinda wished for a bit more by the end. There's obviously something I'm missing, but I just feel like there were some scenes that were a bit rushed and could've been focused on a little more but of course it's already a very long movie so that would be hard. Speaking of it being long, I definitely felt it multiple times, never boring tho. The first movies pacing was a tad bit better imo. One of my favorite aspects of the movie was the role of Jessica's baby, played by Anya Taylor-Joy in that one scene. I really liked how that was integrated in the story and I was always interested in that part. I assume it will be further explored in the next one, as will a lot of plot points. Jessica herself was also very interesting. Paul's story was of course the main part of the movie and as I mentioned before, there were times when there could've been a bit more time spent developing him but it was overall a compelling character arc, just like the first movie.
The ending of the movie was a mixed bag for me. This part has to do with the action and not the story, but the battle was kinda short and not the most impactful thing ever. I feel like movies like Lord of the Rings did epic battles like that way better and I felt the stakes a lot more with those, this one kinda went a bit too easy. I do have to say tho, that Paul vs Feyd-Rautha was incredible, held a lot of weight story wise and it was an extremely well choreographed fight scene. Probably the best scene in the movie. "May thy knife chip, and shatter" very cool! His death was also kinda expected, but obviously a cool end to his character. The actual ending was pretty cool as well, with Paul setting out to do exactly what he desperately didn't want to do, but I guess it was his fate. And I assume that the last shot of Chani was suppose to show what he has left behind and what he used to be. I'm probably off on that, but that's what I got out of it.
So yeah anyways, I've yapped on far too long all to say that while it wasn't the 10/10 Top best movies of all time like I hoped, it was still obviously an incredible piece of cinema! Still easily in my top 100 of all time for sure! I don't know if I really said anything in this review, just wanted to say stuff about this movie that I hope to love even more in the future. Bye now🙏
