these stars are half for the soundtrack and half for christian bale’s acting skill because i’ve got a goddamn bone to pick with whoever fucking adapted this. i usually heavily prefer source material over adaptation with maybe two or three exceptions - and this is not one of those times!
the reason i’m so upset, i suppose, is that this film takes ellis’s work and distills it down into an easily digestible little pill of a generic thriller. nothing genuinely alarms and everything is explained and it’s not nearly over-the-top enough to reflect the story in any way. i wondered while reading the back half of american psycho this morning how the hell one would adapt it and i have an answer! poorly! ellis’s original, masterful juxtaposition of bateman’s obsession with brand and image and logo and Fitting In with his total apathy towards unspeakable things - and i mean totally nauseating and cruel acts, far beyond a goddamn chainsaw in the back - and to people overall is muddled completely by a script that doesn’t allow bateman to be violent OR obsessive to any real scale. also, the film gives this whole experience a recognizable plotline, which i suppose is loosely necessary in the medium, but it really takes even more away from the original concept (which is brilliant in its lack of linearity or grasp on time). god and i’m even more mad because christian bale is incredible in this and i only wish he had been given better material that was more reflective of the novel - despite all of the changes he is stunningly believable and absolutely the best thing about this by miles in my opinion.
i’m sorry to my friends who love this movie. i’m sure i would feel differently if i hadn’t just read the book but that really doesn’t matter now! i’m frustrated; i really wanted to love this and i don’t. i usually write funny (to me) little one liner reviews on this website but i am just incensed! agh! im rating this 3.5 because the film stands on its own, is well-constructed, and (again) because i think christian bale is awesome here, but as an adaptation it is lacking severely. sorry. if you can stomach the novel i highly recommend it, although i acknowledge it’s not for everyone and has the potential to be very distressing (exercise caution!)
