]]>Despite the triptych structure there are at least two wonderfully subliminal thematic progressions between the three stories:
In a movie of utterly recognizable faces the fact that the titular R.M.F is somebody we probably have never seen before and he gradually becomes less present in each story is fucking genius in a movie about people being compelled by intangible/invisible forces they can't shake.
We go from middle class characters in beautiful houses, high rise office buildings and ornate cocktail/wine bars (The Death of RMF), to working class people in more rustic abodes (RMF is flying), and then lastly a group on the fringes of society with dive bars, motels and shabby doctors clinics (RMF Eats a Sandwich) being the locales. Even the modes of transport get lower down from Plemmons' jeep in the first story to Stone's sports car in the third. Consciously or unconsciously it's a movie that is brilliantly using class not as a didactic social message but to strengthen the sense of people becoming increasingly displaced from their vocations, family and culture.
I loved this movie on first viewing as one of the most demented and brave follow-ups to a 100 million dollar grossing movie in years, but on top of being a brilliantly thorny and confrontational counter to the right-on crowd pleasing empowerment of Poor Things it just might be Lanthimos' richest film.
]]>Fun, but borderline feels like a pointed thumbing of the nose at people who thought he was starting to phone it in. "Oh you couldn't get on board with the existentialism and poignancy of my Asteroid City? Fuck you here's a whiffy trifle of a movie."

]]>Wasting Plodding Runtime
Most impressive is how much it feels more like a film from the 2000s in its gritty cinematography and handheld camerawork, but it's just absurd what a one trick pony it is other than that, The needle barely moves either aesthetically or thematically after that first hour and it just meanders to its routine conclusion with a syrupy reverence that feels disingenuous after all the grime and blood it wallows in.

]]>Alex Garland's Contextual Ambiguation II: Electric Boogaloo
It's thankfully far from the half-hearted and incurious bore that Civil War was, even if it's not all the way there. A docudrama that accidentally ends up as a Bressonian video game movie in its tension between the minimalism and verisimilitude of its storytelling and invocation of imagery we just can't untangle from decades of jingoistic propaganda at this stage. A tactile procedural that's so curiously distant and cold it ends up having a bizarre clarity about its own shortcomings.

]]>Pretty fun, but boy does it feel like a classic case of "we worry people won't take this seriously as a piece of cinema unless we drag it out to 90 minutes"
]]>A major major film that works even better if you don't see it as Lynch's "normal" one and as a work actively in conversation with the dark unexplainable forces elsewhere in his filmography. A movie that isn't looking away from the abyss but staring at it fearsomely
