]]>I DIYed a short film challenge all by my lonesome a few years back and it was a good time. It opened my eyes to the almost unfathomable wealth of talent and vision and creativity hidden behind the ubiquitous feature-length form with which most of us primarily engage. Well, it's time to have another go, and this year I'm happy to have stumbled across the Short Attention Span Challenge. Now I can explore some more great shorts and do it alongside the ever-fabulous Letterboxd community. us here!

]]>Is there a cult comprised of people who religiously make lists for Letterboxd challenges and then watch ALL the films on those lists IN the time allotted because doing otherwise is incomprehensible? If so, I'm in a cult. That's my cult.
It seems fitting, then, that I should a challenge with the word "cult" in the title. It's my first year tackling the Cult Movie Challenge, and like everything else I undertake, I'll watch every title here.
Maybe you'd like to , too? It's probably not a cult, I promise!

]]>My watchlist is overstuffed, and plucking out a single title to watch is paralyzing. So, I've fallen into the habit of ing movie challenges to help whittle the field and ease the crippling indecision that results from an inordinately bounteous cinematic selection. This listโin constant flux but always containing less than 100 titlesโheralds the movies I'll watch in the days ahead.

]]>I love the idea of the Directors League (Graham J, originator). It combines three of my favorite things: movies, numbers, and heaps of data!
Here's how it works:
To be included, a director must have a least five feature-length (40+ min. per AMPAS, AFI, and BFI) non-anthology films to his/her/their name. I must have seen and rated at least 5 of these films. The film on the list is my favorite from that director. In the notes are the following:
โข The director's name
โข The director's mean (or average) score out of five stars
โข A percentage score using Darren Carver-Balsiger's scoring method (all films rated five stars = 100%, all films rated ยฝ star = 0%)
โข The five (or more) titles I've seen with a โญ representing rated films
โข Ties are broken by the number of films rated, then by however I damn well feel like it ๐.
Additionally, a link to a ranked list of some of my favorite directors is included.
My league is a long way from being as comprehensive as it could be. Over 230 directors are eligible under the five-films-seen rule, yet only about 60% have five or more rated ๐.
Many thanks to Darren Carver-Balsiger, Matthew B., Michael's Cinema Paradiso, and TajLV for their impressive lists. All four helped inform the structure of my list.

Pick five directors, pick five of their movies, and watch them. Thatโs what this challengeโcreated by Mr. DuLacโis all about. Itโs a tidy, approachable way of dipping my feet in a meaningful (if not comprehensive) selection of work from filmdomโs wide-ranging directorial pool, from the celebrated to the obscure, the auteur to the journeyman.

]]>I've had a sudden, uncontrollable urge to watch some documentaries. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I've only seen 19% of the films on the Official Top 250 Documentary Films list, by far my least complete (percentage-wise) of all the stats lists. Or perhaps it's the discovery that the genre is my highest-rated at a 3.63 average, and who doesn't love to settle in for a film they're almost sure to love? Whatever the reason, I had to act. Luckily, a quick search of Letterboxd turned up AngelMonkey's DOCx52 2025 challenge. I love structure, so I'm happy to jump on the bandwagon, meticulously build my list, and placate this sudden hankering.

]]>Perhaps "shame" isn't quite the right word, but it'll do.
Some of the films here will never go away (I couldn't care less about the MCU, for example), but the others, when and if I watch them, will be replaced with the next most popular title I haven't seen from that year. Those lucky titles that I've gotten around to watching can be found here.
Rules: No shorts, no live shows.
Curious about what the flip side looks like? My List of Obscurity documents the least popular films I've seen across the years.

]]>Sometimes 90 minutes just won't cut it. After all, your sprawling epic needs room to breathe, time to develop, and space to spread out. You've got big dreams, and the straightjacket of time will not bind you, nor will the whims of the studio system. Containing a story this vast in a comfortably-sized package, a general-audience-friendly presentation, is not only an affront to your vision but also categorically unfeasible. Go forth; shoot footage! How long do you dream?
These are the longest (3+ hours) movies and miniseries I've watched, sorted in descending order of length.

]]>Let's face the facts: My watchlist is unshrinkable. It just isn't possible. And while I've reluctantly come to accept this reality, I still have to at least try to stem the tide. After all, the tide waits for no man. Plus, you miss 100% of the movies you don't watch. So I'm thrilled once again to tackle Nina's perennially welcome Honey, I Shrunk the Watchlist! Challenge. Ain't no shrinking gonna happen, but at least I can say I checked off a few titles and hindered my watchlist's expansion rate. As in previous years, I've added a couple more bonus slots to cover all the decades in my watchlist. For 2025, it's the 1930s and '40s.

]]>This list was built under the iron fist of one rule: Each pair of films must share the same director. That means you won't find combos like 2010's Pixels (dir. by Patrick Jean) and 2015's Pixels (dir. by Chris Columbus) here despite their explicit heredity. I am, however, willing to stretch the definition of a short. For example, Cooper Raiff's Madeline & Cooper (which gave birth to his feature Shithouse) exists in that ambiguous gray area of "too long to be a short" and "too short to be a feature," but I've decided to include it and others like it. Also, I've chosen to incorporate screen tests (such as If Beale Street Could Talk director Barry Jenkins' Another Young Couple) and proofs-of-concept ร la The Customer is Always Right, Robert Rodriguez's exploratory Sin City prototype.

Inspired by James Westbrook's identically named challenge, this list will take me through 31 Netflix originals that I put off watching because they're Netflix originals, and that means they'll never disappear. Enough excuses! It's time.
The rules are simple:
1) All 31 titles must be Netflix originals, whether apparently generated by an algorithm, birthed by a big-name creator, or simply exclusive to the service.
2) There is no time limit.
3) No rewatches.
Because I've been so negligent, these movies have piled up over the last ten years. So I've decided to make this challenge a two-parter. Here's the other half: 31 Days of the Algorithm: Stage II (2020-2024).

Last year's March Around the World was my first and was unexpectedly, fabulously rewarding. So naturally, I'm back for more ( in here!); let's hope there's no sophomore slump. This year, I'm aiming for a real potpourri of choices: a smattering of films from previously unseen countries, a handful of titles directed by women, a wide range of genres, selections that stretch across no less than 103 years, stories that spring from every corner of the Earth, and the majority from new-to-me directors. I even managed to find 30 options without a single U.S. co-production credit. Hooray for March!

]]>From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.
โ Dr. Seuss
They say humor doesn't translate, that it's too culturally specific to tickle the funny bone of a nonnative. But I'm not entirely convinced. Whether in the form of a Canadian cackle, Guinean giggle, Latvian laugh, Swedish snigger, Guatemalan guffaw, Chinese chuckle, Tunisian titter, or Honduran hoot, laughter is the universal language, and a lot of that is down to just being human.
This list seeks to supplement the many lists on Letterboxd that exclusively or predominantly feature English-language comedies. There's a whole world out there and, in every corner, no matter the language, something to laugh about.
(Most movies below are not pure comedies, but should contain enough humor to justify their inclusion.)
